Most promising Town player who didn't make it... 13:47 - May 17 with 21203 viewsKropotkin123

Personally I remember Nabil Abidallah was a Dutch international at multiple youth levels and at the time I expected him to break into the team, but he didn't go on to have a decent career.

Who did you think was going to be the next big thing for us?

There was a lad called Peter Canavan in the youth team / reserves of the late 70s who everyone says would have made the first team, very good player by all accounts.

He died tragically in a car accident in late 1978.

Was going to say my mate Tanner. Kinda made it by scoring the winner at Anfield, but we often chat as to what might have been if he’d avoided trouble.

He still had a decent career, must have played 100 games for Town over four years, scored a few goals and had his moments.

What happened to him...

Signed as an 18 year old for 250K. Went on loan to Gillingham and Colchester before a free transfer to Notts County. Spent 4 years there before moving to Grimsby on a free. Just moved to Mansfield.

One I did hope would have a long and successful career with Town was Phil Whelan.... absolutely astonishing start to his career but fizzled out sadly?

I can remember Neil Gregory being touted for good things as he seemed to be banging goals in for fun in the Youth Team.

Can we mention Jordan Rhodes too? Josh Carson? Dean McDonald? I want to add Jaime Peters too, because of the hype and interest his signing at a young age generated, I don't think he quite fulfilled his potential.

It's certainly not over for him yet, but what I saw of Lankester in our relegation season I thought we had a top, top prospect there, sad he seems to have gone the way of ITFC in general since then.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

I'll be surprised if he becomes any more than a league 2 or lower player after us. Shadow of his former self and may I suggest even less useful than Drinan.

Never be afraid to share your thoughts.

He had the luckiest hat-trick I've ever seen. I can't even remember the details now. But I was amazed at the time.

I can’t recall all of it but I know one of them came from the keeper managing to kick the ball backwards by hitting his other leg with the swing and Bowditch got a tap in. It was surreal and couldn’t fathom how he could do it, seemed like the laws of physics had been broken.

I don’t think they could bring him to heal though.

The great thing about watching AT though was that it did feel like watching one of us playing for the Town, and I don't mean in terms of his footballing ability either.

With is talent I doubt I'd have been any different at all, used to see him in one of the pubs in Witham from time to time and always seemed like a decent bloke.

He was captain of England U19 too.

I think it's been said that David Geddis was never the same player again, after that crash.

The obvious answer we have all missed is Philip Ham

Was a destined to be a world class full back, could tackle like Mick Mills, have the silky ball skills of Burley, the flair of Treacle the crossing ability of Clapham, the durability of Stockwell

Against Watford? The third being an intercepted pass from the keeper, I think?

Think he ended up at St. Johnstone if memory serves.
