Anyone tried Psilocybin (REF: BBC 2, tonight)? 23:31 - May 19 with 4602 viewsThe_Flashing_Smile

I've known and read about this for years. Obviously it's not new - it's the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, which has been known since the 60's.

I didn't make it to the end of the documentary as my laptop died, but it seems fascinating, and well worthy of more research (as opposed to what the big Pharma companies serve you).

I honestly feel like we're at the beginning of a drug revolution that will evolve the human mind, but which governments want to quash (for obvious reasons) and docile and ignorant fools (like chico, sorry but it's true) will eschew because of said governments.

I wish people would wake up before I die.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Nope. But I did half a microdot at Hollywoods one Monday night about 25 years ago. In hindsight not the wisest of decisions, it must be said. Put it this way, from that day on I vowed never to willingly take psychedelic drugs again. I gather magic mushrooms are a less harsh trip than LSD, and I did watch the BBC2 programme tonight with interest - the reports of vivid images and patterns were very familiar to my memory of it but mine were pretty horrific. So while I've had bouts of depression and anxiety before, it's a 'no thanks' from me when it comes to Psilocybin

Well worth a go. If you ever go to Amsterdam, there are some great shops that help talk you through the different types of mushroom and the differing effects.

On a medical note, I read an article on trying Psilocybin in the treatment of dementia. Apparently it can really help with the depression and reduce the negative outbursts. Nature knows.

Once I get to that stage, just dose me up and turn on the Liquid Wheel.

Many times.

Acid is better by miles though.

And no, it won't cause any drug revolution as you mainly spend your time giggling, rolling about and talking absolute boll0cks. It also makes your tummy turn.

My abiding memory of it is laughing hysterically and chucking pennies at some American student in the first year. Was very funny at the time, less so now.

Used to do a fair bit. At one point most Fridays were either acid or mushrooms and this went on for quite some time. While most people were on E’s our lot were on acid or mushrooms.

My mate was a maintenance bloke at Martlesham BT and mushrooms used to grow a lot on the adjacent fields so every Friday evening started with a cup of mushroom tea. Acid was abundant then, can’t seem to get it these days but back then it was easy, White Lightnings were the best but the standard stuff was Purple Ohms, Batmans, microdots or similar and they weren’t on the same level.

The only problem with hallucinogens is you need to plan things a bit, I was tripping with a mate in The Duke of Gloucester once and his wife came in and dragged him to a family BBQ that he had forgotten about — and this was a heavy one as we had done about 100 each (we normally did 50 and that is a fair old whack).

The other thing you need to do is decide beforehand how fecked you want to get as it’s difficult to top up, even double dropping won’t get you back up to where you were and if you try it you can get into trouble IMHO.

Had some great times, I distinctly remember to this day playing pool in The Racecourse with a Liquorish Allsort, he was the one with the liquorish centre with pink surround. Only ever had one real bad trip and that was on mushrooms. One time I introduced mushrooms to a friend of mine who is a prominent teacher at Kesgrave and it was too much for him, he spread a load of chocolate Nesquick on the floor like that women from the shake and vac advert and then proceeded to pour milk over it. I didn’t take much notice as I was watching TV, it was either when the Berlin Wall came down or Tiananmen Square, I can’t remember which one as I was tripping on both occasions but it was quite surreal, in fact the next day I had to check that it actually happened.

Can’t remember the last time I indulged, probably a few years back in Amsterdam when I was out of the way. Not sure if and when I’ll have another bash but I doubt it will be anytime soon, when you have more things on your mind there is a greater chance things can go bandy.

Here’s the thing for anyone reading this who fancies a dabble. If you have a chink in your mental armour acid or mushrooms will find it and you could be in for a few hours of hell.

Your last point is very true. But it is easy with a little experience to simply redirect yourself if you're having a bad time, maaaan. It can also be quite satisfying to look at/think about morbid things while tripping - although you probably don't want to do that too much!

Being out in the sun, on the grass, with a few beers and with mates around is still the best way to do it. Can't be arsed with tripping if out at a pub/club etc, far too hectic :)

Still have half a jar of shrooms preserved in honey actually. Might get them out now summer's nearly here. Great for tea that way as well.

My god, this is a walk down memory lane. Purple Ohms, batmans, microdots. Gorbachevs!

When I was 18-19 a lot of weekends were spent tripping, often in Cindy’s and Olivia’s. You hear horror stories, but I found it fun and fairly doors of perception-y.

Best experience was seeing The Fall on acid.

Wouldn’t particularly want to do it now, but wish I’d seen the documentary.

Totally agree with that last point. I've done mushrooms a few times, back in the day, and each time have completely fecked me over.

I was into E's. I wouldn't want my kids to do them, but I can't deny some of my best times were on pills.

The secondary school I went to had a church opposite and shrooms used to grow in the grounds around it.

Never really been a religious type, but stands to reason God wouldn't have put them there unless he expected somebody to make use of them right?

In contrast to Lucan, I've only had good times on shrooms but have been close to a bad experience on acid a couple of times, though to be fair I suspect it was probably more to do with my state of mind at the time than what I was dropping.

I'd certainly do them again, but no way in hell I'd go near them at the moment, too many pressures in my life currently.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

There used to be a travellers site in Amsterdam where the sidings are that people were shipped off to concentration camps and I did that very thing of allowing myself to go full on morbid and then flipping it!
My other bit of hard earned advice is not yo start s massive mushroom trip in a windowless Huddersfield bedsit....I literally died that night before managing go escape outside and being saved by a Corona fizzical bubble on an advertising hoarding!
Also if playing pool while tripping....always go spots....the stripes go all over the place.

Or the mate of mine with already fragile mental health who took psychadelics and smoked a lot. Was very ill for many years and ended up throwing himself off the top of a car park. I won't say it was directly down to the drugs, but can't help thinking it was a contributory factor in his collapse.

Did either of you ever do The Dungeons on Lea Bridge Road? That was mental! Rough, moody, people dangerously off it, but exhilarating! I once sat on the fire escape steps watching some lads who had nicked a car play dodgems with the rest of the cars in the car park.

Someone doesn't understand evolution.

This childish idea that psychadelic drugs somehow expand your mind, is embarrassing.

I'm guessing you didn't watch the documentary then? The evidence suggests that psilocybin essentially does expand your mind, or at least increases your brain's plasticity to allow it to make or remake connections that can change how you think.

The documentary is well worth watching, seemed to be some very solid evidence, albeit with a fairly small sample, that psilocybin could be a very effective treatment for anxiety and depression.

As you say, that seems to be where the evidence is leading.

And re: brain plasticity, I remember reading one researcher who was one of the pioneers back in the Timothy Leary, who says that anyone under 25 should probably avoid it as they already have brain plasticity and this potentially interrupts and damages development. But that everyone in their 50s could and possibly should be taking it to keep their brains limber and stop from effectively fossilising.

So basically, we wouldn’t have Brexit or perma-Tory government if people started to feed their heads. I might launch a brand of tea called Churchill with a secret ingredient.

One of the best experiences of my life is owed in large part to mushrooms. Travelling and camping with friends through Europe and stumbling across a rave in a forest near Konstanz.

The first time I ever dabbled I was sat by a big lake in a local park back home, bathed in sun in the company of good friends. I'll always remember us all saying 'not much is happening and 'I think these are duds'. All of a sudden a bloody great dog comes running past and it's so big it sort of looks and sounds like a horse in full gallop. All of us just start laughing uncontrollably and the good times begin.

I didn't try acid until a little bit later but I've always been lucky with both and never really had any bad times. I think the key is being with people you trust as much as anything else. I'll definitely be watching this documentary later, cheers!

Yeah, not for the people in the documentary it doesn't. This isn't about getting your kicks, it's about the potential for psychedelic substances to treat anxiety and depression.
