I see our turd of a local mp is stoking the culture war again. 09:13 - Jun 3 with 9255 viewsDubtractor

Taking the knee getting both barrels this morning.

I despair of the fact he represents my town.

I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun. I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

but discussing how best to display opposition to discrimination isn't inherently racist. it seems to me to be entirely up to the players - particulalry those who suffer abuse online. but it does seem interesting that cricket is going a different way. or perhaps cricket is just wrong.

It should indeed be up to them and the point is that there shouldn't be a right or wrong. But Hunt apparently has a better idea of how these footballers should face up to issues very personal to them and as long as he, Darren Grimes and their ilk scream "MARXISM" then a large number of the population will badly misunderstand.

If it's up to the players and they have decided that taking the knee is the way to show opposition to racism then it's wrong to boo or criticise then for taking that option.

Southgate said in the post match interviews that the players decided taking the knee was how they wanted to show this.

If football has started out with what cricket is doing (which I haven’t seen) then I would bet my mortgage on the fact that Hunt and his fellow ‘woke-warriors’ would have been up in arms about that at the time.

To get as uppity as he continues to be about a gesture which takes 3 seconds as a non violent protest sums him up - the fact that the gesture is now booed by a few, cheered to drown that out and then people say it has run its course and should be stopped probably sums up the issues with racism in this country

discussing taking the knee isn't the same as being a racist. the policing the choice of gestures seems very unhealthy - which every direction you do it from.

based on the posts in this thread i thought he had said something much worse.

I would say that's a rather charitable description of what Hunt is doing, and I've suggested he's a moron rather than a racist (though it's quite possible he's both). People should be able to go about expressing their opposition to discrimination in whichever way they see fit, Hunt is the one suggesting there is a right and wrong way to do it.

I realise I may upset a few here but I would like an end to taking the knee. I know, I know. I think it should be replaced by something else, continually, frequently. Doing the same thing all the time doesn't have enough impact in my opinion. It doesn't enrage me, I just feel it isn't enough any more.

Incredible given all the work Ellsemere did, baffles me why this drongo got shipped in.

Unfortunately Ipswich is a Brexit town, regardless of how well Ellsemere did, it was the get brexit done mob that won the day.

Ellesmere was never Ipswich’s MP. It was Sandy Martin (Labour) prior to Hunt after he won in 2017, and prior to that Ben Gummer (Tory) since 2010

Also ChiefXL is right to point out it wasn’t really clear just how much of a sh*t Hunt is at the time of voting. Certainly some signs were there with election campaigning focused mainly on Brexit but then equally that hardly a surprise given the Tory focus around it. At worst I’d say Ipswich voters were guilty of making a party/Brexit vote for a candidate they had no knowledge of, and with no real ties or affinity to the area, over a hard working local man that no doubt has the towns best interests at heart

That said, I’d also argue that Martin lacks any real gravitas and was pretty ineffective and out of his depth as an MP (perhaps a touch unfair but my abiding memory of him as an MP was him making the dreariest of speeches to an empty commons chamber about some minor issue, or even in one case waffling on about Tyrone Mings). Obviously he’s still a far, far better choice than Hunt but I don’t think it’s hard to see why he lost votes

Tbh, it isn't really about this comment, it is the continuous stream of culture war bullsh1t that hunt peddles.

This is what he does. I wouldn't say it makes him racist, but he is more than happy to pander to people who are.

You know this thread will end up getting pulled before that happens.

As for Tom Hunt. Rhyming slang at best. He seems to do nothing for Ipswich and bottles doing anything, whilst churning out this sort of deflection to gain attention. He should beware what happened Grimes when he trod that path.

Thread should be safe……Gav has had his say and I have to say I agree with him.

Need to find another way to get the message over that racism will not be tolerated . I think it should be the football clubs, not the players, who make the statement. Perhaps a tannoy announcement or prominent display, pitchside advertising, scoreboard etc.

Like it , or not, some see it as a political jesture that doesn’t make them racist.

It makes them very ill-informed though, and I'm sure you would want people to be educated correctly. Darren Grimes and hard-right MPs drawing false equivalences to Marxism because it'll stir up the right people doesn't make it true. Happy to be shown where the political gesture in taking a knee is.

Then they need educating on the difference between the historic movement and the adoption of this act in this country.

Frankly anyone who thinks they can tell the players they know better than them about the abuse they receive is deluded at best, but most likely coming from a rather unpleasant place. The fact the gesture has been demeaned so much and not embraced is telling itself.

The thing that is encouraging, is the reaction to the booing.

When you see a player taking the knee, and then you hear that being booed, people in the crowd have a choice, stay silent and let it continue, or drown it out, and show support.

Racism is a bit like pregnancy, ......bear with me on this one.

You can try telling a person that is pregnant, how they should feel about it and how to handle it, but I am not sure that people that have not been subjected to pregnancy, really understand the experience. It would be a brave man that told a pregnant female what to do.

I have been spat at, called names, been physically attacked, my partner has been verbally attacked and physically attacked, I have seen my parents being verbally abused, I have seen my in-laws and family being ignored.
And I am white male, and I would not even begin to claim I have a particularly good idea of what racism/homophobia can feel like.

Tom Hunt, wouldn't have a clue.

So if people that do get abused regularly, want to take a knee in-front of an audience, and/or want to do other things, I will support them.

If people think something else will work, I see no issue in suggesting something additional that will actually work. And see if it takes off. And if it helps, and other things are no longer needed, sure stop doing things that are less effective.

I think TWTD is good, in that, for instance you do make sure LGBT+ groups get promoted.
And on the forum, it is good that you get of obvious trolls/racist/homophobic language.

If you have anymore ideas, it is your site Gav, you have a large audience, maybe include something in the next upgrade and mobile app version.
