Dozzell to QPR, deal agreed... on 09:35 - Jun 11 by itfcjoe | That injury for AD was so unfortunate, Feels a lifetime ago now..... but think back to that day...... Dozzell, off the back of a Euro U19 victory, where he started every game and was playign a year up (5 in the squad were doing so including Reece James and Mason Mount)...... He comes back to pre season and is flying..... Mick McCarthy, who is Mr Pragmatic, starts Dozzell who has recently turned 18, in front of the back 4, and tells him to go and get the ball from the GK and CBs and make us tick..... There isn't a single player that McCarthy gave that responsibility to in his 5 years here, for even a single game - but yet he let Andre do that as an 18 year old on first day of the season. By the time he was back fit, Hurst was in charge, and it never really happened for him - Lambert could never get the midfield functioning with him in it as just never got that role right....now he's 22 and is seen as unfulfilled potential.....and is fighting for his career. |
Yeah, so much early potential. I do think he can get there, he needs the right partner though. I was at the Charlton friendly too, sitting very close to Jason when Andre got injured too, he was playing much further forward, almost in the number 10 role. The difference that day against Birmingham for Mick is he started alongside Skuse. Dozzell was the deep lying playmaker, take the ball off the back 4 and keep us ticking, get us up the pitch and pick out those passes which he absolutely had and still does have the ability to do. Too often this season he hasn't had the protection that's allowed him to play. I think back to games like Pompey where he had McGavin, Judge, Lankester and Dobra around him. Brett McGavin put a shift in but he looked way short really. Or Charlton where he started with Gibbs and Mcgavin. Swindon, Huws came in to try and offer that protection, but he's finished and completely immobile. We didn't give Dozzell the licence this year to find that space and be that true playmaker, because we offered so little quality protection alongside him. We've never replaced Skuse who has barely kicked a ball for us in 18 months.

It feels like a waste of talent pushing Andre out of the door at this point, more so than anyone else at the club (Downes may be too good for us to keep). This, after a season when he's had to add the grittier aspects of the game without a great deal of support in central midfield and done so fairly well (compare the number of yellow cards before January and since). I'm disappointed.

Dozzell to QPR, deal agreed... on 09:49 - Jun 11 by Jon_456 | Looks like two different players there. Think the injury had more of an impact that what most of us probably realise. Appears very sharp and mobile in that video. These days he looks slow and lackadaisical on the ball. Hopefully the move will do him good. |
I think more of us realise the impact it had but were playing the willful ignorance card and hoping for the best.

The idea that a higher league will be better for him is laughable. Didn't do much in league 1 ? I know, better stronger faster opponents will sort you out.

Yep, it's crazy how much we've missed Skuse - even when you look at good run at start of last season Downes looking class it was alongside Skuse......just someone who you know is dependable, and wins their headers (an underrated important aspect of being a L1 CM), and reads the game well enough to give everyone a licence and make them look good.

I agree, especially for £500k. We have the resources now to keep him.

Me too. I think he’s a quality player but is a victim of Cook’s idea of how he wants those two central midfield players to operate ie physical presence, high energy as opposed to ‘playmakers’. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I don't really want him to go, but then again I think where would he fit in? As others have said, lets push him further up the pitch, but isn't that why were in for Crooks? It's a massive shame, and no doubt he'll be sold on for a good few quid in the next 2/3 years if he does well at QPR, but to me (even though I don't want it to happen), it feels like a fresh break is needed.

Dozzell to QPR, deal agreed... on 09:36 - Jun 11 by BlueBadger | The lad's been crying out for some proper coaching, motivation and team structure about him for the last three years. If he hadn't suffered *that* injury he'd have been long gone already by now - either because he'd been able actually use his ability in a properly drilled and coached Mick team and been poached or ha definitively shown he wasn't up to it. Hurst and Lambert wasted three years of his career for him. |
Do agree with all that, his early days were very much a case of him being thrown in after a poor run of results (with others) and when he didn't instantly perform he was gone for another extended period. On the very odd occasion he was brought on as a sub (bristol at home i seem to recall) he had a major impact on the game.

I think we may have the resources but are handicapped by salary cap. With the salary cap in place we surely can't use up too much of that on squad potential. Ashton has said we will be pushing it to the limit. Sounds interesting, I'd definitely be up for a quality over quantity approach at least until we get out of this league! It's a shame as I would like him to progress with us but if he is not in the plans of the manager then he has to go to free up salary for players that the manager will utilise.

The problem is if we aren't going to play him and give him the time to develop or find a role that works for him then keeping him isn't right either. He's not going to suddenly improve loads playing for the U23s. SB

Good point, well made. Forgot about the cap, as you say we all might be disappointed but if he's not in the managers plans then there's no point in us or him hanging around.

What's most telling from that video clip is how much 'zip' he has off the ball there. His movement is much sharper. This season he's looked very pedestrian by contrast. You do have to worry whether that ACL injury has affected his all-round game forever.

If you look at the start of the season it's there - but towards the end whether it was confidence, fitness, moral, or whatever he had had it drained out of him.

Still think the problem this season was that he had no competition. He had the luxury of being pedestrian as we had no Downes, Nolan etc for alot of the season.
