When Paul Cook was appointed last year.... 11:00 - Nov 24 with 13576 viewsitfcjoe

.....the 'wasters' in the squad under a manager who had chucked the towel in had 50 points from 30 games.

In order for us to get to that same position, over the next 11 games we need the following record

P11 W8 D2 L1 Pts 26

Downes wanted away, Doz needed a fresh start away from here, the rest were either loaners or are facing relaxation from L2 with Colchester! Let’s be honest, when Lambert left we may have only been a few points off the play offs….but none of us really thought we were good enough to make it! I’m not saying we look like promotion candidates currently and I know we were poor on Tuesday, I’m still optimistic personally! If that makes me a ‘happy Clapper’ fair enough!

It really is crazy the talk still comes back to Downes and Dozzell when the world and his dog knows one asked to leave and the other had a release clause inserted in to his contract so he could leave, and took that up.

There are actually plenty of other sticks to beat with than these two players we had no control over its baffling its still referenced.

Without doubt Downes is doing well, which everyone suspected he would? he's a cracking player.

Dozz is gaining more game time but is often (still) first or second sub off when he starts, he's not setting the world alight and certainly way off the impact Downes is having.

Dozz in league 1 wasn't a fit.

You are conflating 2 issues. Its perfectly possible for both Cook's tenure so far to be very disappointing and a load of your mates from last season to have individually and collectively become a waste of space. Cooks performance to date does not change what went before.

So if they were all a waste of space last season, what is this squad? Some of those same players were nothing like a waste of space under Mick, and some of them weren't a waste of space under Lambert.

It's almost like a diabolically failing manager has an impact on a squad, regardless of how good that squad may be (see Manchester United)

I’m irked by a manager who couldn’t get anything out of what was a decent squad and chucked them all under the bus, and who now has a far superior squad and still can’t get anything out of them.

That we can’t even match last years squad when you are saying barely a couple of players would get in this years, and I don’t disagree, surely should be a massive deal?

Precisely.

Lambert gets half the Col U side pensioners, a bunch of want aways and drifters and some average loanees knocking on the door of the playoffs.

Cook buys a superior squad all based on their "buy in to the project" and we're worse of performance wise (save for the fact the footie is a bit prettier).

In my view this is much more concerning than getting less out of the same squad. Cook was given every managers wet dream in terms of latitude and backing.

The majority aren’t anti-Cook.

Just anti-being 13th in League 1 (and falling) after a manager was given the biggest budget in the League to get out.

For starters he had the option to play a central midfield of whom are currently plying their trade in the league above. Plus a striker in Norwood who's proven at this level. Won't bother going into more detail.

It's bizarre how many of the anti-Cook propaganda squad (without a hint of irony) rush to the defence of each other with '...majority aren't anti-Cook'. After spending a morning posting.....anti-Cook comments!

Anti-Cook propaganda? You mean people questioning the manager when we're sat 13th in the third division (with many divisional rivals having a game or two in hand on us) with the largest or second largest playing budget at our disposal? My word, we're in some very odd territory when criticising a manager who is doing a poor job is framed as being anti-Cook propaganda.

Well they were 7th in this league with a manager who barely spoke to them so must have had a bit of quality - this squad this season is far better, but somehow is being contrived to do far worse

You're clearly a bit of a low watt bulb so I'll try to make this as simple as possible. We are 13th in the league, there is no bias in presenting that. Several of our divisional rivals have games in hand, you can fact check this yourself if you like to ensure it's true. We have the largest or second largest playing budget in the league, now we won't know this for certain until our accounts are released but looking at what we've spent on fees - north of £3m in total - and the calibre of players we've signed, beating Championship clubs to sign some of them, I am confident that this is also an accurate claim. So where is the bias of which you speak? Reply with something a bit more fact based and a lot less glib next time, otherwise don't bother.

Hadn't last year's squad played together for more then 3 months? Do you not think this team might compare better with last seasons team once they have played together for more then 3 months? Who would you have kept from last seasons squad?

Norwood has proven what at this level exactly? That he enjoys arguments on Twitter? A League 2 pub player, if ever there was one. I was in favour of retaining him at the start of the season because he seemed to have made an effort to stay out of Greggs and offered something, possibly as an impact sub. I was wrong. He has offered nothing and been paid a good living doing it. I hope the club can unload him in January along with Jackson and Nolan even if we had to subsidise their over inflated wages.
