When Paul Cook was appointed last year.... 11:00 - Nov 24 with 13575 viewsitfcjoe

.....the 'wasters' in the squad under a manager who had chucked the towel in had 50 points from 30 games.

In order for us to get to that same position, over the next 11 games we need the following record

P11 W8 D2 L1 Pts 26

The last 5 games have all but finished Cook. He knows it and Ashton will know it.

It’s just a matter of when he pulls the trigger.

There is no excuse for being so far from the playoffs and with games in hand could be 13-16pts off very soon.

If they are going to do it, they should do it now.

IMHO, the season is done now, unless we get dragged into a relegation battle, which I don't think is likely.

If the new regime are happy that staying in this Division, probably in mid-table is a launching pad for a strong showing next season, fair enough. If they are not content with the current position, they need to act asap.

See out the Crewe game and we then have ten days between league matches. If we do not sack him then, then we’ll be at least going through to new year with him.

He was always very slow with Lee Johnson and gave him so many chances, but then Johnson was his man and we don't know what pressures were coming from above compared to know.

So the reality is - we won't know until it happens, or doesn't!

Lee Johnson may be available soon....shudder....

Plus, he just gets it and the football is better.

Love that you have the courage to come out from your hole in the ground to say that again after a terrible week when the football has actually been a lot better for months in the run up. What does that say about you apart from the obvious?

Why does last season’s squad tear up irk you so much, Joe? There wasn’t much there worth keeping was there? Who from that squad would you have in out match day 18 now? 2 maybe 3 players, one of who wanted to leave anyway? Not feeling the sentiment for what we had before Cook came in.

Amongst the "wasters" he got to name in Game 1 - 6 players currently above us in the league, plus his current starting centre half.

Downes wanted away, Doz needed a fresh start away from here, the rest were either loaners or are facing relaxation from L2 with Colchester! Let’s be honest, when Lambert left we may have only been a few points off the play offs….but none of us really thought we were good enough to make it! I’m not saying we look like promotion candidates currently and I know we were poor on Tuesday, I’m still optimistic personally! If that makes me a ‘happy Clapper’ fair enough!

I’m irked by a manager who couldn’t get anything out of what was a decent squad and chucked them all under the bus, and who now has a far superior squad and still can’t get anything out of them.

That we can’t even match last years squad when you are saying barely a couple of players would get in this years, and I don’t disagree, surely should be a massive deal?

Sorry Joe, I agree with most of your views, but not this one. For me last years squad of 40+ players was poor and their attitude after PL was fired was a disgrace. Any group that downs tools (Wimbledon and Northampton) has to go. It’s nothing new. Carroll and Baxter tried it on with Robson and of course a number of last years heroes helped unload Hurst. It’s plain wrong. Cliques, factions, pension seekers, journeymen, wasters and a few genuinely decent lads caught up in the middle sums up last year for me.

I didn’t agree with publicly hammering them though. That was wasteful, crude and actually stupid. But letting them go in the summer, no problem. I’d have kept a few of the decent lads, but those who wanted out and the rest, cheerybye.

The fact that Cook can’t put together a decent team is a totally separate issue for me. Cook may well prove more inept than Lambert, if that’s possible, but you’d have to give him another 18 months to prove it - and we cannot afford that.

A well reasoned post Churchman, like you I agree with much of Joe's posts.
Cook is either stubborn, incompetent or insane. What is the definition of insanity? Something like repeatedly doing the same thing over and over again hoping that one day it will come right. Sounds like Cook's plan A to me.

“All but finished”

Succession plans to enact etc.

I can’t see a way back for Cook and a win vs 24th placed Crewe is meaningless in the evolving story.

After Crewe we have Wigan and an in-form Charlton. Can’t see a lot of points out of either of those.

Rather poetic would be his old No.2 finishing off his Town career and taking Wigan back top…

I don't think he'll go yet personally. And if Sundays game is meaningless we may as well not show up, eh? Whilst were still in it every game is important. Even if it adds 3 more points for the new man (if he comes in) to work with.

But he blamed that squad for not being good enough though didnt he?

Replacing an entire squad obviously carried a lot of risks and challenges, but to have done so and yet not even improved on the previous squad (assuming he doesn't get to Lamberts 30 game points haul which is fairly obvious) that he himself declared "not good enough" is literally, not good enough.

You are conflating 2 issues. Its perfectly possible for both Cook's tenure so far to be very disappointing and a load of your mates from last season to have individually and collectively become a waste of space. Cooks performance to date does not change what went before.
