McGreal as interim, and brining his own assistant. 10:49 - Dec 6 with 4014 viewsitfcjoe

It really feels to me that this is McGreal's job to lose

Most of the time the backroom staff stay on (like we saw with Gill with Lambert). In this case they've all gone so probably makes sense to have an assistant come in, especially if the process takes longer than this week.

Agree. Bit strange to bring his assistant in for one game...

Interesting times.

I think they know the season is hanging on a knifes edge and so probably want to give him the best chance at picking up points over the next game or two.

Leaving his "standing" aside, Cook's "ability" had us mid-table in L1. That's not going to be very hard to improve upon.

4 months into a supposed long term project. 19 new players that came into the club in the summer.

I understand short termism is the order of the day for a modern football fan, but 4 months into a long term project.

We weren't lingering above the relegation zone, we just didn't find the consistent formula yet. In time, maybe not even this season, but we would have found success under Cook.

We said that about Lambert...

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

If he gets a good points return this month he’ll be here until end of season is my guess

I just don't see it. I think they'll have someone lined up but may take a few weeks to sort.

Perhaps McGreal has a few games so think best to give an assistant than if it was just one game.

As much as I wanted Cook to go and think it needed to be done, i will not be happy if they have sacked Cook to appoint McGreal as our permanent manager.

Long term, he's proven that he has what it takes to be successful, maybe not 4 months into a complete overhaul.

It’s the bringing in an assistant which makes me think we’ll give it to him. Just had £15 on him @ 6/1.

Can’t say I’d be thrilled by it but if he does enough over the next few games, which are tough, to get the job he must have something about him.

It's a bit of a win for him too, if he isn't going to be the long term appointment, this gives him the opportunity to put himself in the shop window, and if he secures a few good results could get him gigs elsewhere.

And he has been at 90% of the games, so he knows what he's walking into and the abilities of the players.

If he doesn't get a good points return the season will be dead and buried. If someone isn't lined up and in within the next few days, I do wonder if it'll be McGreal until the end of the season.

If it wasn’t John McGreal but just a lower league coach with his record it definitely wouldn’t be his job to lose…

He did a good job at Colchester considering the players he had at his disposal. I would be quite happy to give him until the end of the season. Nothing like a short term contract to get the best out of an employee.

McGreal can't be a serious contender for the long term appointment.

Has to be a Manning or an Appleton.. more progressive, more proven

l dont get this Appleton love in. Ive never been hugely impressed with him. He has done well at a very small club. Not sure he can take us forward though.
Manning is a no too, not enough experience, less than Hurst and look how that turned out.

Mad to think that he was a property developer up the road from me not long ago and now he's leading Ipswich away at The Valley.

... which is the "transition" phase referred to by Ashton.

The "long-term project" starts, in reality, in the Championship.
