Anyone else considering not going Saturday? 11:44 - Dec 13 with 10301 viewshomer_123

I maybe in a minority and everyone has a choice to make, so this isn't a plea to stop people going.

I'm probably not going to go....not had booster yet, booked for next week. So, although double jabbed, likely I'll miss.

Having weighed everything up - just too close to Xmas to take a risk of contracting Covid and scuppering Xmas plans.

I know a fair few people who, on the run up to Xmas, seem to be limiting social contact etc.

Anyone else thinking the same?

Please do not mistake my comment on insufficient data for selfishness.

It was this comment:

"I am extremely unlikely to get sick, hospitalised or die from any variant of Covid-19 in spite of vaccination OR booster status"

The "I" element of it.

I'm personally unlikely to get seriously sick, hospitalised or die but those close to me might if I bring it home.

Each to their own and people just need to own that risk

I assume as we are outdoors the chances of catching it are still greatly reduced. But we don't know do we? And we are all packed tightly in breathing in air just chanted out.

I think for now im on the side of carry on - but that may change over the next week or two as we learn more about the severity etc

Woah, chill. If you'd like to point me towards the truth please do so and I'll recant my suggestion that we're yet to see consistent enough data.

Everything is anecdotal at this stage, but from what many doctors in SA are saying then it's virulent, but mild, the vast majority of people in hospital with Omicron have it due to being in hospital, as opposed to going in because of it.

I'm all for keeping safe, wearing a mask and remaining vigilant.

But equally, I do think that if that video hadn't had been released last week of the Xmas parties, then I think the tone would be far calmer from the Government.

A positive case in the family this morning has come close to spoiling our Christmas plans. Long awaited reunions with siblings/children travelling from across the pond, who haven't had a Christmas together since before this started.

If it has spread, with 10 days iso taking us right to Christmas eve, we are fooked.

I'll probably volunteer somewhere in London if I can't get home.

Just for clarity, I didn't say (or mean) that you were less likely to contract it based on profile or vaccination status.

What did you mean then?

I didn't want it to be an argument so apologies, just want the right information to be available to people.

This close to Christmas and with 10,000 more fans than normal it seems a risk too far for me.

Others will see it differently as we all do with risk.

I happily jump out of planes and off buildings for fun. Others won't.

The fact we'll be 2-0 down after 70 minutes and trudging out quitly probably helps too.

Here are a couple of bits, I can find some actual studies later if time allows and you're interested.

From Pfizer themselves:

https://www.pfizer.com/news/press-release/press-release-detail/pfizer-and-bionte

"Sera from individuals who received two doses of the current COVID-19 vaccine did exhibit, on average, more than a 25-fold reduction in neutralization titers against the Omicron variant compared to wild-type, indicating that two doses of BNT162b2 may not be sufficient to protect against infection with the Omicron variant."

https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-ukhsa-omicron-variant-tech

"The effectiveness of two doses of vaccine against omicron is poor. A primary course of Pfizer gives only about 35% protection against symptomatic illness from 25 weeks after second dose and AstraZeneca hardly any."

I'm pretty comfortable with my thought process around this festive period which has included a lot of considerations...

Who will I see at Xmas? Are they vaccinated? How old are they? Are they boosted? Will I be boosted? What's the data look like on Omicron? etc. etc.

Yes I’m not. I’ve only been twice this season as I’m not overly comfortable and there’s 0 masks where I am. I think I’ll be moving seats next year. Personally it’s not worth the risk this close to Christmas - but each to their own, and if they’re following guidelines, then I have no axe to grind with people who do go.

Well, I got Covid in October and have had my booster, so guess I’m at low risk of getting it or passing it on (more than happy for SB to correct me if I’m wrong on this).

I will add I got it at the Doncaster match, so if anyone’s thinking it’s outdoors so probably OK – I would reconsider. Bear in mind no-one will be wearing masks in the concourse (apart from me and about 3 others), and the crowd will be about 28,000…

Just ignorance then? Has been all over news that without booster you are not well protected.

Not protected from contracting it, no. Protected from serious illness, hospitalisations, or death? Not enough data.

I share the unease but think the answer is to do as the club advises and wear a mask, including in the seated areas. I did this for the first few games (especially as I was sat amongst the Blue Action people with plenty of shouting and singing) but I have since moved my seat and not worn a mask recently. I will do so on Saturday, given the new variant and the fact the ground will be heaving.

And that's it really. People need to make their own decisions based on their own personal risks.

If this works for you and your family, no-one here (or anywhere) has the right to tell you otherwise.

Indeed.

I think I've been slightly misunderstood, too, based on what was perhaps a poorly worded comment (shocker). I wear a mask in all necessary settings, follow govt. guidance to a T, am double vaxxed and desperately trying to get a booster (have a word with NHS Digital will you?).

I'll be there, I'm boosted and generally want to make the most of life before further restrictions come in.

Imagine pubs and restaurants will be absolutely heaving in town on Saturday, so probably be advised to stay away if you are wavering.

If it wasn't for Xmas and the plans we have, I'd be going. So, from my perspective, it's driven more by wanting to ensure that Xmas can go ahead without any issues.

In effect easing back social contact in the run up to minimise exposure and risk.

So, I don't believe it's a Lockdown from the Bottom as you are suggesting, for me personally. Just, for this one thing, being a tad more cautious.

But that's what it is, people easing back and making calculated trade-offs to reduce risk in some scenarios in order not to endanger the ability to do other things. Common sense and healthy caution, really.

The effect of lots of people doing that simultaneously is the same as a mild lockdown, both positive and negative.
