Starmer to resign 15:12 - May 9 with 10493 viewsGlasgowBlue

If he's issued an FPN*.

Very clever and puts the ball back into Johnson's court.

*Durham Police have already said that they do not issue FPN's retrospectively, so he won't need to resign even of found guilty of breaking the lockdown rules.

I completely agree with you that there is nothing to see here. So why was there utter amazement that people drink on the job when the garden photos were released?

Forget the law breaking argument for a minute. People couldn't get their heads around people drinking at a workplace in between meetings.

absolutely - karaoke and the drinks in a suitcase was indefensible. people working in the garden or in the durham hall and having a drink at the same time was always a non-story. it's all been politicised, by both sides, from the start.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Was there? Whoosh me at your leisure if I've missed something, but wasn't the general incredulity more from a standpoint of "as per the invite that's very clearly a photo of a jolly old post-work soiree featuring wine, cheese, a wife and child and absolutely no evidence whatsoever of the meeting we're expected to be stupid enough to believe it is" rather than "omg they're drinking at work"?

The working in the garden was following an invitation to bring a bottle. Not the same at all.

Yes. Labour at the Scottish Parliamentary elections last year and Labour in the local elections last week.

Your last pra is bizarre. Both the miners hall drinks between meetings and the no 10 garden drinks between meetings seem almost identical.

Now who am I trying to smear? Starmer is a man of honesty and integrity. Johnson os a liar and an incompetent.

There's nothing bizarre about my last para. You're comparing the WORST thing Labour have (supposedly) done re: Covid, with the LEAST WORST thing the Tories have done. I don't know why anyone would do that unless they're trying to defend the Tories in some way (or attack Labour), however reasonable they're appearing to be about the leaders.

I guess if you're now a Labour voter (x2) then in terms of our years of political spats, me in the red corner you in the blue... I won
Glad you got there in the end

No it's not "both sides" at all. The Tories undoing is all their own... and the desperate attempt to pin something on Starmer is a deflection away from that.

As an apparently staunch Labour supporter I'm amazed you'd fall for it/be complicit in the deception.

It doesn't really matter that Starmer's innocent of any wrongdoing - in much of the public's eyes it'll be "they're all as bad as each other" and the job will be done - with useful idiots like you helping it along.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

No you didn’t. Because the man you argued with me about was comprehensively rejected by the electorate, replaced as leader and kicked out of the Parliamentary party as a result of being in denial about the subject you and I were in different corners over.

Starmer's drink and food was at the end of a long day of campaigning, when the rules allowed it.

I'm not sure it's that straightforward you know. The rules allowed gathering indoors if it was "reasonably necessary for work", and there seems to be a general inclination to interpret that as "go on then, you've had a long day and you've all been together anyway, tuck in" - and that's logical, but this a debate over what the rules were rather than what they should have been (there were endless memes about the self-contradictions in the rules at the time). It's therefore a question of whether eating and drinking together "at the end of a long day of campaigning" was "reasonably necessary for work", but even Starmer doesn't seem to think it was, or why all the emphasis on having gone back to work afterwards? That's why the agenda is a bit of a torpedo, as whoever signed off on that seemed to have essentially planned something at the end of the day that wasn't "reasonably necessary" - you'd hope a forensic legal eagle like Starmer would be able to produce something that proves he shot that down and said "no, as per the rules we're not there for 'dinner', we'll just get a takeaway in and keep working", but without that it'll turn on whether the evidence that some work was done afterwards is enough to prove that it wasn't meant as some sort of post-work wind-down. Even if it was, it's less flagrant than what the ruling scum did (repeatedly), but I fear he's in for a rap on the knuckles nonetheless...

Corbyn’s statement was factually correct, of course. It was a little tone deaf at the time but then again, given the nasty personal slurs against him I can understand why he felt the need to make the statement.

The denial – and it’s total – was that there was no gross exaggeration and there wasn’t a whole cottage industry of people trying to put antisemitism at his and others’ doors. For factional, party political and extremist pro-Israel gain.

A shameful and scandalous episode.

Oh absolutely. Although in the football setting blue is the colour of childhood summer days. In the political setting, it’s the colour of the devil’s testicles.

The big defenders against the supposed “extreme left” (perhaps a trip to Scandinavia would cure their blindness?) are fairly indistinguishable from most Tories on most issues. And that’s also why they love Starmer so much.

Scandinavia disproves your idea about our politicians being the reason for the UK sliding further right. Sweden and Finland are left-wing countries and both have two of the biggest far-right parties in Europe. Similarly the governing left-wing party in Denmark has adopted an asylum policy similar to the ideas Nigel Farage puts forward.

It’s certainly not as rosy as you make it out to be.

I think I’ll go by own experience of living and working in Scandinavia rather than your cherrypicking.

You’re talking about right-wing populism that is the scourge of Europe as a whole. But in Scandinavia and elsewhere that’s much more the protest vote of those discontent with the status quo.

In the UK right wing politics and populism is the status quo.

Starmer's issue isn't the fact that he had something to eat, it's the fact he has lied about it whilst portraying this holier than thou act against Johnson.

If his bar is you should resign even if you're being investigated, then he needs to resign also.

FWIW, given the other, more pressing issues we all face, I think we need to concentrate on helping people survive, rather than worry about birthday cake and curry.

Not sure...if so it wouldn't have mattered if they'd gone back to work afterwards, but Starmer's hung his hat on that to the degree that the leaked agenda makes him look shadier than if he'd just called it a work dinner at the end of a campaigning day. Totally agree people gotta eat, but the working day was scheduled to end at 8:40, so having a scheduled "dinner" wasn't their only option...as I say, I hope the evidence that some work was done afterwards is enough to prove that the story is as he's told it, regardless of what the agenda said, as the moral high ground is critical...

Yeah we keep hearing that last bit from Johnson, who openly didn't give a toss about the fact that people were dying while he was quaffing champers with his chums. Trying to ensure we're governed by honest people who hold themselves to the same standards as we're obliged to is a pretty "pressing issue" isn't it?

And here we (have to) go again.

Ambushed by cake eh?

No rules were broken (lie)
There were no parties (lie)
There were gatherings but I wasn't there (lie)
All gatherings were work related and no rules were broken (lie)
There were some parties but I was only there for 9 minutes (lie)
I was assured no rules were broken (even if true deflection - someone else's fault)
I accept the FPN and have paid

Who cares about cake? We have a deceitful charlatan at the head of government who thinks nothing of lying in the HoC and ignores the convention about resigning when caught out in those lies. A dangerous sociopath IMO who is propped up by a falange of backbench MPs desperate to get themselves on the gravy train.

You might be happy with Benito Johnson and his gangster cronies but I'm not and if you think they are going to do anything constructive to help the people of the country through the cost of living crisis then I feel you need to think again.

Edit: Not a direct reply to you m14 but rather to hype (or anyone prepared to read another rant)

" Corbyn was simply screwed by the racism scandal his regime helped bring on. "

er ?

Since when has criticism of the state of Israel been racism ?

Corbyn was ,as will Stramer be,a victim of right wing smears, using the tabloids. They know most voters rarely read beyond the headlines and a constant drip drip of a lie has an effect (see Goebbels)

I will be generous and assume you fall into that category, as to think otherwsie would have you are part of the smear campaign.

Nobody seems bothered that KS is drinking on the job?

Mate, the House of Commons is full of bars that are full of politicians, they're all at it.

Nothing to see here.

That alcohol is a part of the political culture isn't the issue though is it. The issue is breaking the law (they set) and then repeatedly lying about it to Parliament. At a time when 'we' (ordinary people) were being fined up to £10k for similar behaviour and breaches of the law.

As of now, Labour don't fall in to this category. If however they are found to have broken the law then that changes things.
