Morsy - absolute marmite 07:59 - Aug 7 with 8070 views | Wickwar_Blue | Hands up, I don’t see Town often (2/3 times a year) and (due to geography) I’m now a season ticket holder at Forest Green. Yesterday was a very strange experience for me. Not sure I enjoyed it! It was also the first time I recall seeing Sam Morsy play. Is he like that every week? Every tackle he left something on this opponent, niggly, horrible player. But then he pulls out a piece of sublime craft for his goal. For those that are old enough he reminded me (not in terms of position, in terms of attitude) of the likes of Paul Dickov or David Speedie. I’d imagine the majority of ITFC fans love him but away fans leave every game despising him? Is that fair?
Morsy - absolute marmite on 10:57 - Aug 7 with 1944 views | bluesym | It really baffles me how any fan cannot understand just how good Morsy is for us. Brilliant captain, brilliant player. He isn't marmite at all, more like if you don't rate him you dont know anything about football...

Morsy - absolute marmite on 11:33 - Aug 7 with 1892 views | clive_baker | Marmite in that opposition fans probably hate him and Town fans should love him. But then opposition fans will always hate playing against someone as combative as him and with his ability. The difference with Morsy is he is an ankle biter, he’s a sh1thouse for sure, but unlike a lot of players of that mould we’ve had, he has the ability when he’s on the ball too. He can pass, can shoot, can look after the ball, can beat a man even. Good feet, as strong as an Ox. Best player at the club and hopefully we can get 40+ league starts out of him this season because he makes a massive difference.

Morsy - absolute marmite on 08:55 - Aug 7 by Wickwar_Blue | Yes, you are quite right. I’m no longer a Town fan. Hope life remains nice and straightforward for you and you never have to face a scenario where your loyalties are tested. Blackburn Rovers fans despise Morsy - that took about 2 mins research. I’m not saying he isn’t a good player. I think he performs a vital role just that he is pretty cynical at times. |
Oh well. If Blackburn fans hate then he must be bad. Jeez.

Indeed - we’ve spent the last 3 years getting bullied in this league. Nice to finally have a player that can give some back, and add some much needed steel to the midfield. I just hope he doesn’t accumulate too many suspensions!

Lost his man for their goal though. Great player but went chasing the ball and cost us that goal

I think nuance is something that tends to get left behind on here quite often. I think it's fairly obvious the point the OP was making, but many seem not to want to look beyond the first take.

Not sure anywhere on web/social media is the right place for nuance and I’ve learnt my lesson! It feels a bit like if you don’t 100% think [insert ITFC player or Manager] is the best thing since sliced bread then you don’t know anything about football/aren’t a “true” Town fan - but this only applies when we’ve won or are doing well. The reverse happens if we’ve struggling. To defend a Town player/Manager results in similar “you know nothing about football” feedback. For the record Morsy played really well yesterday. And yes, his approach is probably what is needed at times in L1. I hope we keep up the solid start and he maintains his Egyptian King status all season long…… but I shall have a little smile to myself* if he attracts criticism for disciplinary record on this forum later in the season. *This does not mean I will be happy if our skipper is banned!
Morsy - absolute marmite on 15:37 - Aug 7 with 1543 views | Nthsuffolkblue | How many red cards has Morsy been given for tackles that have left something on his opponent since he has been here? Indeed, how many of these challenges have led to the opposition player getting injured? Chico repeatedly states that his disciplinary record makes him not worth having. However, the statistics completely oppose that view.

Morsy - absolute marmite on 10:53 - Aug 7 by Pendejo | Dear all, Please re-read OP. Sitting amongst home fans it'd be easy to pick up the hater vibe. Last two paragraphs make salient points - similar battling qualities to Dickov and Speedie, loved by Town hated by opposition. Don't understand the down votes. |
I down voted because he claims to be a Town fan but yesterday was a very strange experience and he's not sure he enjoyed a Town win, plus he said "Every tackle he left something on this opponent" which I dispute. Hope that's ok for my down vote.

Morsy - absolute marmite on 16:20 - Aug 7 with 1480 views | The_Romford_Blue | I spoke to 5 Forest green fans last night after the game and they thought he was tremendous. Unanimously agreed he looks well above league 1 standard which we all know ourselves anyway. But nice that opposing fans agree

Morsy - absolute marmite on 09:01 - Aug 7 by Dubtractor | Not sure why you've got pelters for the OP to be honest - he IS a niggly player, and is probably horrible to play against, and he is exactly the sort of player we've not had at Town for a long time. Nick Hayes (co commentator) even stated that he tends to leave something in on tackles in training too. I think he generally stays the right side of the line, but having that bite in midfield helps lift the whole team when we're winning the ball back. Note how quickly we turned over Forest green possession yesterday, and the same with Bolton last week. |
Many many posters will have no critique of him whatsoever despite his obvious failings last season.

Was joining the thread to make this comparison (loved Magic, so pretty high praise) but see that you beat me to it. It's not just the qualities Morsy brings on and off the ball himself - it's that he challenges the players around him to keep their standards up (as Harness found out yesterday ) I can remember games we won with Magic in the team where he'd be coming off the pitch with a face like thunder, because even though we'd won we could have been better; must be a ****ing nightmare to share a dressing room with either Magic or Morsy after a defeat!

Wrong I don’t state that. I say his discipline record makes him something of a liability despite clearly being a very good player. I didn’t realise I had made it opaque.

Hello Chickers. I like Morsy a lot; such failings as he had last year would seem to be suspensions, and not enough goals. The suspensions come with the territory, I think, and let's not forget that he was out for 4 games because of that dickface at Accrington. The goals - well, Ball will let him get forwards a bit more, and obviously yesterday's effort was a fully cast-iron banger. I like him. X
Morsy - absolute marmite on 18:11 - Aug 7 with 1314 views | BigCommon | I'm quite sure your comments would put a huge smile on Morsy's face, tbf. Especially with 3pts in the bag. Don't want to sound patronising. But, imo, you are a little naive to think that L1 is home to "The Beautiful Game"... It can be at times.. But scrapping for points, by hook or by crook,is a good part of it too.. You need some bite in your team. Once you've been outkicked and out elbowed by most of the teams in this division. You'll be begging for a Morsy or two in your side.. Toughen up fella, you're in for a rough ride over 46 games. For the record, I thought FGR tried to play football yesterday. Bit more steel and you might have taken something from the game. Good luck with your season. I recon by the end of it. You'll see why every team needs a Morsy in L1. Side note.. Swapping loyalties to another team? That's a football crime mate.

We have had both Lee Bowyer and Ben Thatcher since Magilton, and less aggressive, but niggly in a winding up kind of way, Jimmy Bullard. All lower Prem/Upper Championship players. And James Norwood, who isn't at that level, but is a very good League One striker, and a World Quality Sh!thouse.

Probably because he didn't leave something on the opponent on every tackle. Probably because he only committed two fouls all game (whoscored). Probably because comparatively he wasn't the nastiest midfielder on the pitch... that would be their CM - Ben Stephenson - who committed 3 fouls and picked up a yellow card in 60mins of play and then got subbed because if he carried on he would have got another yellow. Against Bolton he made 2 tackles and committed no fouls (whoscored). His actions are that of a standard defensive midfielder. Albeit with more quality and effectiveness than most at this level.
