....after chasing George Hirst for months, there's been a fair bit of talk about how Macauley Bonne would be a big downgrade, but now seems serious interest judging from both Phil and the EADT guys in a player with 74 minutes of league football under his belt.
Hopefully by 11pm on Thursday all will have fallen into place - but think it would be hugely risky putting all eggs in the Freddie Ladapo basket as the only number 9 with any proven ability to lead the line in such a pivotal season |  |

We have a manager who knows what we are doing, need to have a bit more trust.
If you chase someone (Hirst) you don't draw attention to other players you are interested in, in case the target you are chasing falls through. Excellent to do these two bits of business. Bonne could have just been a smokescreen
Of course the jury is out on how they will do but personally i'm very pleased with the two players, think they will do well and really make the squad competitive and give us good cover.
The club actually runs itself like a proper football club now. |
I think the Camara signing is excellent, really pleased with that - personally still feel a bit short up front and whilst I liked the very little of seen I've Ahadme it's still an awful lot of pressure on Ladapo to come very good this season.

A strange take. What it shows me is that 77% of teams who have been promoted have had a striker who has scored 18 goals + to get the required points needed alleviating the burden on other team members. |
So now it’s an 18 goals plus striker, not 20 (or 30 if we accept your typo argument). You’re just changing the ‘goalposts’ to suit your argument. With Keogh, Ball, Davis, Leigh, Ladapo, JJ, Harness, Ahadme and Camara. A significant step up in quality. | | | |

I agree entirely, but feel confident we have enough up front to do it, and there’s always January. The two signings today validated your concerns really as it showed McKenna clearly agreed the squad needed some finishing touches. |  |

He looks quality to be fair to him, but when you’re talking about a few million quid he wants to be. Always thought it was unrealistic that we would spend that sort of money on anyone while we’re at this level. I think he’ll do well for Blackburn and would’ve buzzed to see him join us, but it’s not to be. We’ve got a lot of quality and I trust us to do the business.

Yeh fair play, didn't realise Ahadme hadn't had any senior footie prior to Nodge and loans.
As said elsewhere over last few weeks, it seemed ridiculous scoffing at Hirst as number one target. Even without amazing stats or even seeing much of him he's obviously got something about him to have been in the England set up etc.
Saying that, point about transfer policy stands. And it's been a good window imo. | |

Innit... an Aesop Fable springs to mind re Hirst... but then again, that one looked dead well over a week ago and let's be honest, it was fanciful. What's encouraging is there were other credible and exciting targets, even if raw or whatever.
Camara was a bolt out of the blue and more than mitigates for any disappointment up top, not that we should be disappointed imo.

Hirst has about 100 games, but 74 in the English leagues and banged in 13 goals. As for ‘chasing promotion’, Portsmouth were nearly as far away from it as we were last season so that phrase is stretching it a little, isn’t it? Ahadme has 6 goals from 25 in the English leagues. Hirst is two years older at 23. Stats wise I’m not seeing a yawning difference if I take into account their relative ages.
I will be interested to see how Hirst does, given the fee and all the hype. Maybe he will be better than his dad, but given his age I doubt it. Will Ahadme prove himself here or will he be a cheap punt destined for L2? Who knows but I think we needed strengthening up front and he will hopefully do that. |  | | |

Second, he wasn't going to come here, when he could go to the Championship. We have to be realistic and realise that, despite the money and potential we have, established Championship-level players are not likely to come here. I think I am right in saying that only Aluko and Keogh have substantial Championship experience, and they are both at the end of their careers. Even Morsy has not spent the bulk of his career at Championship level. And we have attracted people with some Championship experience, such as Morsy, Ball and Chaplin, because of a previous link to the manager, when they probably wouldn't have come here otherwise. Far better to rely on McK's judgment and acquire players (with potential or otherwise) who will fit into his system.
I might add that if we are promoted, we will be able to attract a higher quality of player because we will be in a higher division, but in the meantime some of our players with potential could have got to that level anyway.

As a supporter, rather than a football critic, I cannot believe what we’ve been able to pull together in two summer windows. We are much further forward that I thought was possible, off and on pitch. I look at the squad depth, it’s awesome! With that, KMcK has now been able to raise up the levels in terms of athleticism, height, power, also fix perennial problem areas in the team, not to mention add quality on the ball.
As for adding Pan and GA, Pan we know all about, GA from nowhere, and appreciate we will have to see how that goes, but he looks like another of an aged and profile that can be coached for what we need.
I appreciate going into the final day of the window we looked like we needed two players, I’m not concerned, I’m ecstatic how this window has gone!

Fascinating stat about Mariner. I thought he scored more than that. Mind you, there was so much more to his game. As an aside, I noticed that In the four seasons from 1979 to 1983 John Wark made 165 appearances and scored 97 goals.
