Have to say a bit concerned with how the end of the window is looking..... 15:37 - Aug 31 with 15079 viewsitfcjoe

....after chasing George Hirst for months, there's been a fair bit of talk about how Macauley Bonne would be a big downgrade, but now seems serious interest judging from both Phil and the EADT guys in a player with 74 minutes of league football under his belt.

Hopefully by 11pm on Thursday all will have fallen into place - but think it would be hugely risky putting all eggs in the Freddie Ladapo basket as the only number 9 with any proven ability to lead the line in such a pivotal season

Saying "cakes are really pretty rank" is like saying "I'm not really a fan of music". I mean, there are soooo many different types of cake.

Have to say, I'm not much of a fan of icing myself. Bit too sickly.

Fair enough.

It’s the ones where the flavour is “Sugar!” with only a passing hint of anything else. Which is about 99% of cakes.

I wasn’t a big fan even before I worked in a cake factory for a couple of months. But afterwards ... 🤢

If we settle on a 'first choice' of Ladapo, Chaplin, Harness, Morsy, Evans, Burns, Davis that is a lovely looking 7 for me. KVY is OK cover for Burns (maybe even Edwards too), Leigh for Davis, Ball for Evans. Humphries in the mix too. Morsy is nigh on irreplaceable.

It's that forward 3 though, we have replacements but for me they all kind of bring the same without Sone. Edwards, TJJ, Jackson are direct, fast, versatile, and will certainly kill tiring defences. But Aluko is a technican, he's class. We're light on that side of things in his absence IMO. His vision and execution is lovely, might not have the legs but you can already count 4 or 5 excellent opportunities he's created this season in relatively limited appearances. Drops the shoulder, those perfectly weighted threaded through balls are delicious. Such a level head, more experienced, and ideal to come on (or start) and trust to look after the ball. Hopefully TJJ has that in his locker, but he's certainly a little more scatty. Aluko injury is a blow, I'm hoping it's weeks rather than months.

This will be controversial but for me Aluko's execution is where he needs to improve. He does a lot of the hard work in creating openings and produces a season's worth of stepovers in most games, but so often he overhits the cross or drags his shot wide.

He is class, no argument there. But weren't we all saying our no.10s really need to contribute a good number of goals and assists? Especially true if we're accepting that our no.9 won't get 20-30 goals. Chaplin's doing it, Aluko isn't yet. It's not to say he's not good enough to play the role, of course he is - but I admit to being somewhat deflated recently when I've Aluko come on and Chaplin go off.

I get where you're coming from, even last night, harness's first goal came from Aluko actually losing the ball, but then the good part of aluko came through where he then gets stuck in to win it back, for the ball to fall to Edwards to cross and we score...

In 1 phase of play he can be unplayable to frustrating, back to unplayable again.

I don't think we need a striker. We only play 1 up front and both Ladapo and TJJ seem capable, plus we have Jackson. If Aluko is out long-term I think we need to be looking at an attacking midfielder instead, otherwise we're all set.

If that’s the case though why we have spent all summer chasing George Hirst?

Way I see it, we got Greg Leigh done early, so we could pursue an ambitious target with a bit of security if it didn't come off. Signing up Ladapo and extending Jackson's contract possibly somewhat similar?

We knew Hirst was a stretch, but felt like we were covered if it didn't come off.

Considering he averaged a goal every other start, I would say yes.

Completely right. A lot on here seem to be getting carried away with the good start forgetting the season is very long and the Jan window a lottery. Rarely do sides get out of this league without a 30-goal striker and for all the clamour about goals from all over the pitch, they will inevitably get fewer and far between as injuries, form and suspensions become factors. We need one more and not a prospect.

It’d be stupid not signing Bonne and bewildering if no-one of equal or better stature is signed.

Most sides don’t score goals all over the team like we are expressly set up to do.

If we need a “30-goal striker” it will be because McKenna has failed and a new manager has come in who wants the ball “chucked into the mixer”.

We've apparently been after/kicking tyres on a few in the last couple of weeks though, not just Hirst. I even heard Will Keane mentioned. We definitely want another decent, proven option. It feels to me like Bonne is our 11th hour option. I'll be amazed if we end tomorrow without a signing or just a kid from Sheff Utd.

Leaving aside his current form, what happens if Ladapo gets a long term injury?

What’s going on is anyones guess but it doesn’t look good from the outside. We have got ourselves into a position where, unless Ashton pulls off an obvious master stroke in the next day and a bit, anyone coming in looks like a second/third/fourth choice.

If we really are down to bringing in a youngster who has played five games off the bench and not scored then something has gone seriously wrong!

Rotherham last season, Hull the season before, Wycombe, Rotherham and Coventry had no-one on course to do it in the Covid season, Barnsley in 2018-19, Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham in 2017-18, Millwall and Bolton in 2016-17

In the past 5 completed seasons, 8 of the 15 clubs that were promoted didn't have a 20-goal striker.

I wonder if TJJ was brought in primarily as a Number 10? Admittedly it's a small sample size but his performance at Shrewsbury suggests he's capable of leading the line.

You’re clutching at straws fella. In the last ten years Burton and Bolton have achieved a top 2 finish with the lowest goals for, 57 and 60 respectively. Typically sides achieve, 70 - 90.

If we don’t have 20 goal striker, that’s a lot of goals to share around Ladapo, Jackson, Chaplin, Harness, Burns, Morsy, Aluko and Evans. Based on last season, Chaplin, Burns, Morsy, Jackson, Aluko and Evans barely managed 30.

So what is your point. Teams total goals scored or individual? You've got yourself mixed up.

Why are you basing things on last season? We have players who weren't here last season and now have a left side that can add more chances than we could last season.

The sides who get promoted do Enought to get promoted. There's no simple science to what that is other than get more points than those below.
There is no certainty when signing players that they will have the same season as the one before ( see pigott)

It looks shambolic, but was very similar last year when we seemed to chase Crooks for a long period and then ended up with Carroll instead. Getting another player similar to Ladapo is key so let’s hope we manage it.

How you can say 'it looks shambolic' is beyond me. Everything about what this club is doing now looks considered and balanced to me. I think it's just nerves and wind amongst fans at the moment, to be honest.

Edit: sorry, just read your later posts and clarification.

Yeah, just clarified I mean the chase for a striker (and Celina) seems shambolic. Other than those two issues, the window has been good.

I honestly don’t think we chased Celina. From what was made known to us the offer was made and left on the table, - he chose not to accept it. To me that’s not really chasing.
