Have to say a bit concerned with how the end of the window is looking..... 15:37 - Aug 31 with 15141 viewsitfcjoe

....after chasing George Hirst for months, there's been a fair bit of talk about how Macauley Bonne would be a big downgrade, but now seems serious interest judging from both Phil and the EADT guys in a player with 74 minutes of league football under his belt.

Hopefully by 11pm on Thursday all will have fallen into place - but think it would be hugely risky putting all eggs in the Freddie Ladapo basket as the only number 9 with any proven ability to lead the line in such a pivotal season

Daryl Murphy leaving all over again.

Everyone said we'd replace in August - we didn't. And in January - we didn't.

To be honest we have an embarrassment of riches already and people are bemoaning not having icing on their cake. I'd like icing too, but it's a perfectly nice sponge as it is.

I prefer to think of us as a wedding cake.

We’re layered with quality, we’re relatively expensive, are newly bought and every other cake wishes they were us because we are the main part of the wedding.

Rotherham last season, Hull the season before, Wycombe, Rotherham and Coventry had no-one on course to do it in the Covid season, Barnsley in 2018-19, Wigan, Blackburn and Rotherham in 2017-18, Millwall and Bolton in 2016-17

In the past 5 completed seasons, 8 of the 15 clubs that were promoted didn't have a 20-goal striker.

Oh stop it with your facts! The gospel of the 20 goal striker trumps all fact-based arguments.

And me, claiming Leon Best was the plan all along when we were obviously bidding £2m+ for Washington and £3m for Hugull just for banter and not because we needed them

66 teams have been promoted from League One in the 21st Century, only 3 of them had a 30-goal striker.

Was 20 goal striker, now 30 goal striker; haven't you heard about the lastest inflation figures?

Phil disputes this but I am 99% sure I remember MM saying Best was Murphy's replacement. Best might well already have been on trial or whatever when we sold Murphy but can anyone verify MM said this?

From what I've seen TJJ could emerge as the first-choice number nine.

I'd be surprised if Osula is top of the list, there were a number they were looking at as of last week. I gather Will Keane was one of them, but he's staying at Wigan and signing a new deal.

That might actually be a good thing as we could likely get him back if we got promoted.

Interesting that we thought we could tempt Keane away from Wigan. It's the first place since he left United that he has developed his profile, has a chance to impress in the Championship and maybe even get a move to a top 6 Champ club out of it. We would also have to have parted with at least a hefty seven figure fee and 10k+ per week. Shame, he fits the bill. Do you think we pursued Hirst for too long Phil, especially after Leicester's intentions became clear by mid August?

Not sure Leicester really knew what to do with him, whether to stick or twist. Seems they've put off making the decision for another year.

Maybe we did, we presumably were under the impression we were in with a good shout of getting him. Doesn't appear there was anyone in the background as an alternative, other than Bonne and not sure they really see him as a good fit.

Has TJJ exceeded expectations and is maybe one of the reasons we aren't too bothered by a Plan B for Hirst?

Think his legs fell off and he's only just come back, hence his availability.

I think he has, heard he's impressed the other players and the staff. Think that's probably made the need for a number nine less important but I still think they've been looking.

Having said that, we're not a team which relies on a number nine as such. Goals are coming from all over up to now and that will presumably continue. Maybe another number 10 is viewed as more important, as Kieran McK implied a couple of weeks ago when asked about his target, and we did spend a fair while chasing Celina.

I get where you're coming from, even last night, harness's first goal came from Aluko actually losing the ball, but then the good part of aluko came through where he then gets stuck in to win it back, for the ball to fall to Edwards to cross and we score...

In 1 phase of play he can be unplayable to frustrating, back to unplayable again.

Yep. I'll admit I completely disregarded last night's game because of how bad they were.

I think in our current formation, Chaplin and harness are just as important for goals. But like Salah being Liverpool's top scorer, playing on the right of a front three.

It's annoying that when we have some money there isn't an obvious target.

I wouldn't mind cole Stockton.

I think we look a little light in the forwards department. But if targets go elsewhere or get daft about it, so be it. Far better to wait until the new year or next summer to get what we want. Surely we’ve had enough journeymen squad fillers, troublemakers, pensioners, dross at this club to last a lifetime.

Any player we are after who wants to be here, great. Any player here who is a Billy big boll&x, cheerio. The club and the team is building and that’ll do me, even if another forward would make me happy.
