Blackout kit at home!!! on 14:57 - Oct 11 by itfcjoe | I don't even like it when we wear blue shorts rather than white, so this at Portman Road is not for me! Should have done it at MK or something when we take 10,000 fans to the game so it's basically a home game |
You're missing the point. This game is on Sky and thus reaching people all around the world. And v Derby, so a much bigger draw than MK Dons. It's all about eyeballs on the shirt and promoting the club.

Blackout kit at home!!! on 16:43 - Oct 11 by Tractorgirlforever | Its the team we support, it doesnt matter what we wear and the shirt is the biggest selling shirt in history so what is the problem. Its great that its on sky tv and we can showcase it to a huge audience. |
Meh don't like it. May as well go full Vincent Tan and change to black for the rest of the season if it keeps marketing happy must be most important thing

"It's all about eyeballs on the shirt and promoting the club" by wearing, essentially, a black tshirt!

Blackout kit at home!!! on 16:56 - Oct 11 with 955 views | DJR | It's an evening kick-off. Will the players be able to see each other well, with black shirts merging with the dark of the crowd? Remember when Man U wore their grey kit which they changed at half time because Ferguson said they couldn't see each other.

Blackout kit at home!!! on 14:56 - Oct 11 by Kieran_Knows | In some cases, their European shirts are nicer than their actual home domestic shirts! But it's the same for English clubs, who all use different 'fonts' for player names and numbers depending on what competition they play in. If they're in Europe, I think they then use 4 different fonts (Prem, League Cup, FA Cup & European games). |
I agree, and I think this year the black out kit is nicer than our home - we are always blue and white for home, I get that, but stepping back and looking at the kits together, the black one is much nicer on the eye. I've collected a lot of RB Salzburg kits from their European nights, 2019 Black Kit worn by Haaland, Chan & Minnamino & co. at Anfield is my current favourite, but I've just picked up the current grey kit they are using - which they sell as their 'international kit'. A lot of people don't like the Red Bull Group but I love their introduction to football and their operating model, especially over in Salzburg. It looks like I will be going out there in 2 weeks time to see them at home to Chelsea.

Blackout kit at home!!! on 15:17 - Oct 11 by SomethingBlue | Slightly needless gimmick but my biggest concern is that we’re used to playing in blue at home and anything that even 1% hinders spatial/situational awareness chips away at our advantage. |
Knowing how thorough McKenna is I'm sure he'll get them training in it for the week leading up to the game. I agree it's a bit needless given how well the shirt has sold on its own, and I can see how traditionalists would be against it, but to be honest if it promotes the club and the Ed Sheeran connection further, then I'm not too bothered.

Blackout kit at home!!! on 16:40 - Oct 11 by dirtyboy | This. Black History Month. Club are supporting it, it's commercially a good move, it's not the 'away' kit, it's the third kit. The only issue I have....which means Blue Action etc need to be creative, is that we can't sing the songs with blue in lol! |
Have the club said anywhere at all in their marketing materials that this is the case?

I hate to burst any bubbles but the 100k-odd people watching couldn’t give a monkeys about a black away kit unless they’re town fans, and they’re sold out! So we raise the profile of our kit or the fact that Ed Sheerans album artwork is subtly incorporated into the design, ok what then do people send us money? Makes no sense at all to me

Blackout kit at home!!! on 14:27 - Oct 11 by tractordownsouth | Away kits at home is my biggest footballing pet peeve. |
Yes, even more annoying than clubs wearing their 2nd choice kit unnecessarily when away from home. Another curse of modern football. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter, but I still find it annoying as to me it's part of a football club ignoring its heritage & identity.

Seeing as you're a marketing expert you should probably email the club and warn them about the mistake they're making. Also, they're sold out now, but it's almost like they could make some more...

Well yeah, I do think breaking with 100 years of tradition is a mistake as it happens. And I’d be interested to know what the tangible marketing benefits are that balances the equation

It happens quite a lot in NFL and Baseball in the US and you could say from a marketing angle why not? But if it was my decision I wouldn’t sanction it. As long as it’s only only once.

Probably an element of brown nosing Ed Sheeran a bit too, and lets face it the club needs him more than he needs the club. I get that some people won't love the idea of it and they're entitled to that opinion but it's 1 game ffs. And it is a lovely looking kit, hopefully the players love wearing it and we put on a great show.

After everything the new owners have done to turn this club around, I couldn’t give a hoot if we play one home game in a different colour kit.. and I’m sure the commentators will mention how many kits have been sold and hopefully it might generate more sales of the kit, which in turn helps the club with revenue, also draws attention to the fact Ed Sheeran is a fan which has massive benefits, in drawing more attention to the club, can’t see what the problem is , the management of the club has been faultless since the takeover.
