What has/does TWTD make by chicoazul 23 Oct 2022 9:51
…of Morsy not wearing the rainbow armband on Friday?

29 upvotes for the 5th comment down. Well done TWTD.

Haven't you highlight exactly what this point is about though, freedom to do as someone wishes? If SM doesn't want to wear something for one reason or another (his choice) that is ok. If someone wishes to wear something for the same reason (their choice) that is ok.

Not being allowed to do either and having your hand forced to appease other people, is not ok.

For the Iran game I would like to see Pope start upfront wearing the Rainbow Armband, receive the booking and then be subbed off immediately for Kane

Unfortunately there hasn't been an English Pope for almost 900 years.

Thank goodness Baddiel and Skinner weren't around then, otherwise we'd be up to almost 900 years of hurt....

Trying to remember how many people accused me of all sorts when I asked what everyone thought of Morsy not wearing one. Long as you can live with your hypocrisy lads.

Yep, there are definitely other, clever ways of doing this if England engage their brains (and the FA agree ...).

rainbow laces ? rainbow boots ? rainbow bandages ?

presumably given FIFA are springing these changes at the last minute, it makes sense for any team/players planning to do something to highlight the cause, not to announce it publically first and give FIFA the heads up to invent a new rule banning it.

Be brave. Stop hiding behind “lads” and “TWTD”.

Name the people you think are hypocrites and why.

What if his choice is based on intolerance and homophobia? We don’t know what his choice was based on. The club didn’t say anything and the media, including I believe Phil, didn’t ask.

The boots would be the obvious place for a comment/symbol. Especially if someone like Nike want to gazump Adidas and take the moral high ground.

Come up with a unique symbol that FIFA can't ban and communicate the meaning through ads during the break.

I’m afraid this decision just shows FIFA up for the homophobes that they are.

Personally, after the tournament, I’d renounce any association with them and start another one , perhaps one that doesn’t take bungs and doesn’t gay bash.

But that’s just my opinion

Being serious for a moment for what its worth my two penneth on this is that we live in what is supposed to a free society so if someone wants to wear a rainbow armband, for whatever reason, they should be free to do and if someone doesnt want to, for whatever reason, they should be free not too.

What I am not comfortable with is those freedom being taken away, especially in a situation like the Qatar World Cup where is was obviously always going to be issue that various world FA's, Broadcasters and big business could, and maybe should, take a stand over.

Where's the hypocrisy? Kane wants to wear it and should be allowed to.

Aren't we being consistent by saying it should be up to the player?

Real shame.

But this is a thing in every World Cup, isn’t it? Where only the official and vanilla FIFA-branded messages are allowed.

Do you also agree that Kane should have the same choice?

Its personal choice.

And I accept that you may, or not may agree with that

I think that if Morsy is allowed freedom of choice those same freedoms should be extended to for eg cake makers making or not making wedding cakes for whoever they choose.

The debate was a bit more nuanced at the time. One suggestion was that if the captain wasn't happy to wear the armband, then someone else could have been captain for the day, because to have the captain wear it would better represent the position of the club as a whole.
