Really frustrating again 11:11 - Jan 15 with 6372 viewsitfcjoe

If we fell into a barrel of tits we’d come out sucking our own thumb.

After Burns scored it took Plymouth a full 30 minutes to even muster a single a shot, and then it flies into the top corner.

There will be big post mortems I’m sure, but what more can you do?

We need a 10 who can look after the ball desperately. Chaplin and Harness are players that when what they try comes off they can make a difference, when they aren’t their snappy style of play, flicks they turn over play to often.

Probably wouldn’t have helped defensively yesterday but it would have allowed us to get up the pitch as a team.

I was surprised Aluko didn’t make the bench for this very reason.

Yeah we are desperate for a player like that imo.

Harness played well v Oxford but I think he’s been dreadful in the 4 games since. I quite like him but with Chaplin they are too similar.

Thing is, it's happening far too often for it to be a fluke isn't it.

We dropped so deep and just invited pressure. Rather than trying to get our foot on the ball and maintain some possession. Everyone man was in our box. Humphreys aloud Mumba soooo much space and he gleefully accepted.

Yet another 2 points dropped.

We’ve certainly not been a lucky team this year, bar Burton away, I can’t think of a single game where we’ve nicked even a single point we didn’t deserve let alone 3

We’ve been unlucky this season, and we’ve had some poor officiating

Take the Harness disallowed goal and the Fleetwood double deflection.

But some good luck came back to us yesterday when they missed a sitter onto the bar.

Humphreys and Burgess should it have let their man get the shot away.

Similarly the Wycombe player should never get in the box!

Im of the same opinion.

We were seeing the game out really well and then a deflected shot flies in to the top corner. Wtf can you do.

I do think we lack a real game changer, and think Harness was very very poor personally, gave the ball away far too much.

But ultimately, we are very very unlucky.

We can’t really bemoan bad luck if we’re not looking at good luck too. They had a golden chance to go 1-0 up and hit the bar. The fact is, for me, we didn’t create enough. I can barely remember their keeper making a meaningful save and we created 2 clear cut chances all game, 1 being Burns goal where he still had a lot to do, and the other Harness where he hit the bar. I think on balance we didn’t do enough to win the game and they certainly deserved a point.

They’re a good side, and it’s no disgrace to draw against a well organised Plymouth who matched us up very effectively. I think we’re kidding ourselves if we are putting those 2 points dropped down to luck though.

The first goal was always going to be key, but from the position we found us in at 1-0 up in the second half to only concede one single (low percentage) shot in 35 minutes until FT to see that reflect and fly in is definitely a case of bad luck

Frustration is the word

First hall was so hectic, we seemed toto me play the occasion not the match, credit to Plymouth they occupied Morsy and Davis they had clearly done their homework and Walton looked uncomfortable all half.

We played much better second half half, moving the ball quicker and getting our more creative players on the ball but the Scarr injury and the substitutions broke everything up

I just didn't get our subs yesterday, KVY at RW and Morsy inside left, KMK overanalyzing what to do, square pegs in round holes never work, we got too deep too early and paid ultimate price.

A much needed full week on the training ground ahead, Oxford feels very much like a must win

That incident / goal was unfortunate, he could hit that 10 times and 1 goes in, if that. But on balance it was a fair result. If anything we were more unlucky away to them, we deserved a point. They’ve been 2 even games with very little between the teams, it’s frustrating that they’ve got 4 points to our 1. I don’t think we were unlucky to get a point yesterday though, we got what we deserved.

Ladapo being gifted the ball on the edge of their box and moresy through on goal in the first half were two more good chances everyone seems to be forgetting about.

I would say Ladapo not squaring it to Burns in the first half was a bigger chance. I wouldn’t class any of them as great chances though, half at best. We barely tested Cooper.

But again, Humphreys came on in the 67th minute and it took them a further 26 minutes to even have a single shot - so why is that wrong? We didn’t give control of the game up, we didn’t look like conceding or come under any sustained pressure.

Burns was basically playing as a FB by that stage of the game as it was

Yep. I've seen a lot of comment about us getting it wrong tactically, but I'm not sure we did too much wrong at all. They simply weren't threatening us until that goal out of nothing.

I wasn't convinced by the idea of Morsy in the more advanced left position, but it seemed to work (until the deflected goal)

None of that stops the actual outcome from being hugely frustrating/irritating, but I'm not sure what we could have done much differently.

Disappointing of course. Still a lot of football to be played nevertheless.

There is no doubt we are a really good side, but maybe just have a couple of deficiencies that will cost us too 2 - defence fragility and lack of clinical cutting edge.

I really worry about that number 9 position.

Need higher level quality than Ladapo, Hirst & Jackson imo - for me that will be our downfall.

A lot of people have mentioned the subs but for me that's just succumbing to outcome bias. As OP says that type of opportunity wasn't on for them since we scored and we were doing fine as we were. If there's one thing to point at which affected the game it's the lengthy stoppage which killed our momentum and gave a different mental edge to the end of the game having 9 minutes added on rather than the 4 or 5 max it would have been.

Our issue is we've had a few occasions where we've not managed 'moments' well enough as was pointed out yesterday on here. We got caught a bit deep while they were throwing everyone forward as they had nothing to lose by doing so and cracked one in the top corner. Should have been firmer in challenging Mumba as he was jinking through but he was just inside the box and had already won several very soft free kicks by chucking himself to the floor so we probably were wary of conceding a pen.

Very very easy in hindsight to say this and that should/shouldn't have happened, especially as there's no guarantee that if McKenna had done what all the experts on here and social media said he should have done the outcome would have been different.

I agree with the point on Scarr’s injury and how it killed the momentum in the game.

But the bigger issue is why this was allowed to happen. I have to say I really don’t understand the football approach to this - was this not a head injury? Why on earth is he allowed to go on? It’s not like they didn’t have a sub - Wilson was subbed a few minutes later - it is completely unacceptable that this has not been addressed in football

The real issue is that we’ve had a run of very poor results against so called “lesser teams”. Had we performed as we should against those sides, we would be very happy with getting a point against Plymouth, but we end up pre match desperately needing 3 to reel them in and quelle surprise, we concede a goal at the end again to drop points.

However, as others have pointed out, it could have been worse, that shot into the bar of theirs was criminal and we couldn’t have complained much if we’d lost.

I might have completely missed some information, but Leigh wasn’t even on the bench?

For me it would have been ideal him coming on to tighten up that left hand side. Either then pushing Davis forwards a bit, or as a direct replacement for him. That norwich cnt was pushed up so far on Davis there was very little threat from him that game, might have been nice to have Leigh to come on.

Aluko not being on the bench. Another one that threw me a bit.

Still not even close to being over what happened Saturday. Not felt that pissed off in so long

There was Morsy's effort where the keeper had to pull out a decent save. The other two chances that spring to mind are both ones where Ladapo just made the wrong decision to shoot rather than a simple pass to put someone clean through.

I get that it's in a strikers nature to be selfish and he otherwise had a good game but those are key moments in the match for me.

I like Ladapo but his decision making is probably why he's never really played above League 1 for more than a season. He's got a lot of attributes that would suit playing higher up the pyramid but he often shoots when he should pass or takes a touch when he needed to get an early shot off. I thought Hirst looked decent when he came on so he'll add some genuine competition up top, which can only be a good thing.

Possibly not.
But we may have actually gone and scored a 2nd goal by that point though.

You'll get freak. Fluke goals in games. We seem to get a lot of them. But my issue again is how little games we go into the final 5 minutes of a game with a 2 goal cushion.

But if we'd have pushed on, they might have countered and scored.

In reality, we have just been extremely harshly punished in all of our recent games. We are restricting almost all of our opponents to 1 or 2 shots on target a game and they are just being incredibly ruthless for League one teams. I can't find it now but our stats for goals conceded, are way above where statistically they should lie. You need some luck in football and we aren't getting it at the moment.

They might have done. But if we were 2 up or 3 up and they score one you've given yourself more of a hope of seeing the game out than being 1 up when all it takes is 1 chance to draw the game.

We didn't need to go full on. Just kept playing like we were would have done the trick imo.
