Lineker to step back from presenting MOTD on 21:52 - Mar 12 by PioneerBlue | There is nothing to answer. You’ve gone off topic on to politics. I’m talking about the Beeb and a football program guy. You’ve got yourself (and several others are in the same place) all twisted up and conflated a straight forward organisational matter with politics. |
If it is not about politics, why has his comment on politics got anything to do with the BBC? And why do other BBC employees' comments about politics not get treated the same way? https://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/world/laura-kuenssberg-under-fire-for-extraordina

You are literally supporting the BBC in your comments. If you cannot answer that basic question, how can you defend their actions?

Er, this is only about politics. His tweet was political, the response to it is political. If LIneker had criticised Saxmundam Women’s Institute tea morning, I’ve a sneaky hunch it wouldn’t have blown up (although you never know, they can be a bit feisty in that part of the world).

Lineker to step back from presenting MOTD on 15:41 - Mar 12 by Keno | ok lets take this a step at a time Yes he is paid by the BBC The BBC is not funded by the tory party or the government or taxpayers, it is funded by a license fee He is not paid by the tory party He is not paid by the government The BBC is not an instrument of the tory party or the government. it is supposed to be an independent broadcaster We are supposed to live in a free country, where within reason people are free to express their opinions Lineker expressed an opinion which the Tory party didnt like They have brought pressure on the independent broadcaster to censure an employee and the independent broadcaster have reacted to that Had Lineker said the opposite the Tory party wouldn't have complained The head of the BBC is a well know Tory supporter who is currently under investigation for possible illegal funding of the party and a disgraced leader There does that help? |
Does it help, not really. You see the point you and several others are missing is that many BBC license paying customers vote Conservative, some vote liberal, and some vote Labour. This is a fundamental reason as to why the Beeb has to remain impartial.

SWERVE! This is politics. That's the whole point - he's being censured because he's talking politics. Stop swerving and answer how this is different to all the other occasions when it's been fine.

They're not being impartial though. They're allowing comments that back the government or attack their rivals, but NOT allowing comments that criticise them. So in what way is that remaining impartial?

But they’ve not been impartial for decades. The right are upset that a football presenter has voiced his personal opinion on his own twitter account and are talking about BBC impartiality. But this has blatantly not been a problem when attacking the left who haven’t even been in power for over 4 decades. And this has also been part of the actual BBC political coverage too, from regurgitating any and every smear and trope re: the left as if they’re communists to them wading in with a Panorama documentary on antisemitism that has been shown to have grossly and shoddily misrepresented the situation. That’s a sign of the imbalance: you’re upset about Lineker criticising a right-wing populist government, people like me on the left are upset that the BBC actively helps block social democracy and defends the political, social and economic status quo.

Lineker to step back from presenting MOTD on 09:20 - Mar 13 with 1490 views | DJR | Very interesting to read reports that even Priti Patel has reservations about aspects of the Illegal Migration Bill. This appears to be confirmed by the fact that she has tweeted nothing in support of the Bill, in sharp contrast to "our own" Tom Hunt. If someone had the time, it would interesting to see how many Tory MPs have not tweeted about the Bill because that could be an indication that they too had reservations. I don't think this thread needs any encouragement to get over the line. I reckon its an easy 15-20 pager. Though If I see it struggling I may say something controversial just to help it on its way...

Ok, how different is it to Alan Sugar tweeting in support for the Tory party, and to talk about comparison to Nazis he literally had a picture photoshopped up of Corbyn sitting next to Hitler in a car. Both Lineker and Sugar are independent people, who had huge successes in their careers - but their public persona and standing is now much more defined by being a BBC Sports presenter, and by The Apprentice. Both have continued to tweet about political matters - Lineker clearly not a fan of the Govt, Sugar quite the opposite. Sugar hasn't been censored by the BBC, Lineker now has. Do you think that this is right? Personally I have no real problems with either tweeting about what they want - even though both are big faces on the BBC

The thing that has kept this going is that it is in the football section, so has maybe attracted a wider range of posters. However, the lower it drops down the opening page for football posts, the greater the danger. This puts a great responsibility on the rest of you in my absence. [Post edited 13 Mar 2023 16:26]

I suppose one way to get it past the 10 page mark is; some posters absolutely knew Gary was in the wrong, and should be dealt with. They could explain how they knew that by showing the relevant contracts and guidelines and historical precedents, when the BBC seems to have realised it needs to have an independent review of these topics, since that area is a bit “grey”. Yea, that should help.
