I think its whole design was firstly for additional revenue for UEFA - but secondly for teams like West Ham/Aston Villa etc to go on European adventures - not your big 6 clubs but that next bracket down.
I’d be loving life of Town got there - a European final against Fiorentina - doesn’t sound too bad to me.

I think that it is a very worthy European trophy and would love to see Ipswich win it, there is much more to big European nights than The Champions League, the CL is not the only competition worth winning, it is easy to laugh at it, but it is great to widen the european football experience to many more clubs, not just the so called "big clubs". |  | | |

I'd have celebrated us winning the Pizza Cup. A trophy is a trophy and you have to win a competition to get one. Even if that competition is somewhat contrived.
OK, it may not be as significant as some of those trophies we've won before, but they can all be added to the collection if and when we get others.

Back then the UEFA cup was a lot harder to win than the European Cup.
The European Cup was solely for teams that had won their domestic title the previous year - and unlike now it wasn't a Man C situation whereupon the same team won the league year in and year out.
In fact it was more often than not that the previous years winners were not quite the ticket the following season - it was more likely that the best team of the new season would be one of the teams that would be playing in the UEFA cup.
One thing is for sure, back in the day we might have won the FA and UEFA Cup but really we massively underachieved. If we had won the league we would have won the European Cup - almost definitely |  |

We won the UEFA Cup. Today’s equivalent is the UEFA Europa League. Last night’s game, Europa Conference League, is a level below. As someone pointed out on another thread, it’s the intertoto Cup. Nowhere near as prestigious as our 1981 achievement.

No issue with them being proud of it but describing it as a major European trophy seems a bit off. It is basically a repackaged and reconfigured Intertoto Cup. Any cup win is nice but this is a pretty minor trophy, I'd rank it below a League Cup win, which pains me to say given that that's all our feathered friends have ever won. |  |
