Downes 07:47 - Jul 3 with 13194 views | Clutch | I know he doesn't play for us anymore, but looks like we will be playing against him next year as likely to leave West Ham, and Southampton want him.

And it points to Flynn not being the best way to spend our dollar, unless a loan would be considered.

Downes on 10:20 - Jul 3 by itfcjoe | When Sam Morsy left a mid table Championship club, he signed for a L1 team for £150k When Flynn Downes left a mid table Championship side, he signed for a PL side in Europe for £9m |
Was Morsy only £150k? He's been playing way above his cost if that's the case.

Downes on 09:40 - Jul 3 by itfcjoe | I think the general view is he's had a chance this year to stake a claim and not taken it, that may be harsh but don't think any West Ham fans would be particularly fussed to see him go as they will now be aiming far higher. |
I gather he was bought as a Mark Noble replacement. I’ve not seen anything of him at West Ham - what is it about him that West Ham and their supporters don’t rate? I had a brief look on their forum but he wasn’t rating a mention. By laying him off on Southampton they seem to be trying to get their money back. Watching him for us, I thought he had the ability to play at a good level in the PL. The only doubt I had was his attitude the last two seasons he was here, though that might be my erroneous perception. Especially given the Evans/Lambert mess of the time.

Downes on 11:32 - Jul 3 by ArnieM | I wouldn’t bother tbh . He made it clear he didn’t want to be as this club. So good luck to him elsewhere. Only want players here who are invested in this club. He certainly wasn’t . |
Club has changed a lot since he moved on but I think it would be a difficult move for him to make a year after moving to the Premier League. Would feel like a step back for him. Wouldn't surprise me if another Premier League club wanted him. Palace were long-time admirers.

He's also on big wages, would we want to outlay circa £20k a week on a loan having just signed Taylor? Think we have bigger priorities elsewhere on the pitch.

No, I don't think we would unless West Ham were prepared to stump up a fair proportion as part of a loan. Agree, we need to offload midfielders as it stands.

Think Palace would be a great fit for him if West Ham are looking to invest Rice money on upgrades. We would probably be too much of a step back despite massive improvement since he was last here. I also fear that some of our supporters would struggle to forgive his (legitimate) reasons for leaving last time.

Downes on 11:34 - Jul 3 by J2BLUE | As much as I love signing players like Clarke, we do need to have a little bit of realism with this sort of thing. Leaving was clearly the right decision for him. He ended up winning a Euopean competition with West Ham. |
Yes I quite agree it was the right thing to do. But there are ways of doing things. He wasn’t professional in my view , throwing his toys out of the pram. But like most petulant kids they get their way to start with don’t they.

Downes on 19:21 - Jul 3 with 1686 views | franz_tyson | Why is there such a desire to get as many academy players in tbe team as possible- even when they're former players? Downes would not have been on anyone's radar here if it wasn't for his previous connections..... and we don't need any more CM's. I'm not even sure how fond he is of this club and I don't really care. He obviously cares more about West Ham. Good luck to him. He was a good player for us for a year or so and got the move he wanted .... and we got a decent bit of cash for him. No need to revisit this.

It's nothing to do with him being an academy player, it's more to do with him being quality. If we were linked with another 24 year old from a Prem side who'd played a reasonable amount of minutes having moved to the Prem a year before for £10m after a very good Championship season I'm sure we'd all be pretty happy at the calibre of player we're being linked with. In fact I'd argue those who are luke warm on this are only that way because he left us, objectively he'd be our best player if we signed him. Can't see it happening though.

He's more in the Lavia mould than Ward-Prowse but would be a great addition to that Southampton team.

Go on then point out where I've gone wrong. I think for example I have only seen Morsy lose possession once.

It’s not fair to judge Flynn by what we saw when he was here, as he played under clowns. He looked heads and shoulders above in the Championship at Swansea. (Edited from clarity!) [Post edited 3 Jul 2023 20:57]
