Ashton surely has to be getting cast iron guarantees from McKenna about his commitment to staying and if not 100% then we need to part ways asap? If we don't and McKenna leaves in 6 weeks we really are in a disastrous position, we are not an established premier league club and we have a
lot of work to do this summer.

This is insane.

So if you asked McKenna what his plans for the season are, and he said:

“I love it here. Have no plans to leave. But if a really big club came in for me I’d have to at least think about it”

You’d sack him??

You can ask the OP if you like he said it first lol

And when you put it the way you have. No.. no you wouldn't.

People are really losing the plot. Football just doesn't work like that. That's why there are contracts and severance fees. You can't ask for a cast iron guarantee from a manager just the same as you can't get one from the club in case of bad results and a sacking. It's completely absurd.

You can never make anywhere contract generally means more of a settlement fee. Best thing Ashton can do is have a couple lined up in case this was to happen.

I would agree with that. We will see what happens, i do take the points above though. Maybe this is just going to be the normal, if we hire decent managers there will always be constant speculation.

You don't get rid of a brilliant manager because he's so brilliant a bigger club might try and poach him. I don't know why this even needs saying to be honest.

I'm going to dump my GF because she might go off with another bloke. Better to get it over and done with now.

They key isn't cast iron guarantees about staying or going, that's unrealistic for anyone, the key is absolute commitment to openness and mature realism at all times from both sides, which I'm sure we have.

We are in the Premier League - get used to wild rumours. McKenna and Ashton know much more about this situation than we do.

Parting ways with KM is a weird suggestion, but to do so because of 'paper talk' is nonsense.

If KM does leave us for another team, you can rest assured he will do it with grace and transparency with Ashton. I don't see him as the type who will bolt on whim without discussing it with Ashton first.

What we're seeing now is probably just agents at work trying to get their client on a solid deal and because we're in the PL it is making national news.

I agree with this. In addition, it’s easy to forget how professional this club has become in three years. Once upon a time just about everything depended on the manager. Not now. It is structured. There is an integrity about all they do that is more than just hype.

Ashton and McKenna’s relationship looks to be strong and should anything happen, it’ll be done in the right way, I’m sure. KM will move on at some point. He appears to be a measured, very professional man and it’ll be at a time and to a place of his choosing. He’s that good. I’ve no doubt Ashton and the Board have contingency planned. Done their homework. In the crazy world of football, I certainly would have done.

When all is said and done, the club is bigger than anyone and it’s growing again after many years of stagnation. The stories around McKenna are just that for now and best taken for what they are. Journalists, possibly Agents, making a living.

I'm caught between your two thoughts.. I agree in part with you... but also in part with the OP..

Let's just make it simple. Sign him up for another 4 years with a 40 mill compensation fee.

Why would he sign that?

We shouldn’t sign any players who might be good as we could risk losing them to Inter Milan. In fact to be on the safe side we should avoid having any success whatsoever.

I disagree Herbs.

Ashton spoke of the level of respect between the two of them.. I don't think it's wrong of ashton to ask the question and then decide what to do with the answer
Just like KM has to look after himself.. Ashton has the club to think of..

Whilst saying bye would be seen as a mad move... so could possibly ending up with no manager halfway through a transfer window.

Not forgetting we'd lose all the management team it would be one heck of a transition ahead of a massive season ahead.

Appreciate a change could happen at anytime.. but at least if it happend during the season. You've got your playing squad already sorted.

This post is a madness, it's football and people move all the time - if it happens it happens and we have to react, but we'd never appoint a manager again if we took this approach

It is certainly not meant to be respectful, i am thinking of the club and after 20 odd years out of it, we need to get this season right

Hopefully it is all speculation

You'd bin off a manager, who is under contract, just because he may or may not be able to give assurances he woudn't leave in a few weeks if an offer from Man Utd or another big club came in.

Thats just the invitable place we find ourselves in and always will with any manager that does an amazing job without. You are bsiscally saying bin one of our best managers ever because of 'what if'.

AN offer may not come in and he manages here another two years. That is a riisk i think every fan would take other than you it seems.

I certianly don't expect Mckenna to give us any guarantees. But i think the guy has integirity and you should probably respect and trust him a little bit more.

McKenna signed a contract last season. Pretty sure if he had any ideas of leaving he wouldn't have signed that, and that was without knowledge of PL. Pretty confident he isn't going anywhere yet - he's loyal, has a journey to do and done nothing but speak positively about staying
