I think some of the criticism here is perhaps a little harsh. The first half of the quote rings true, even if the second half about ITFC being a 'last resort' option seems to be a little far-fetched.
Given that McKenna came within a gnat's crotchet of moving to Palace back in February, despite our league position at the time, it wouldn't surprise me if his initial thinking was to give the ITFC project a few more months and then seek a higher profile job in the summer, regardless of division.
All that really does, for me, is underline the amazing job that Ashton and Schwarz have done in forcing a U-turn from McKenna, even if his two attempts to jump ship (maybe slightly harsh terminology) in the space of four months do make me worry about how much of the new four-year deal he'll actually see out. | |

Strikes me that McKenna (and agent) thought there may be an opening at Old Trafford this Summer, have played a bit of a game over the last few weeks to see if it could happen, but ultimately happy to stay here when it probably became clear that it wouldn't happen.
I do disagree with the seemingly prevailing view on here that Brighton wouldn't be a significant step up, but equally I think it's not without significant risk for that, and therefore staying here is just as attractive. [Post edited 30 May 2024 18:13]

I cannot see how "there was a plan to leave Portman Road – regardless of promotion – this summer". For a start, how would McKenna know in advance what interest there would be in him and from whom? Without that knowledge, how on earth could he (or anyone) begin to make such a plan?
The BBC twot clearly made up his earlier article and, instead of keeping quiet, he's now digging an even bigger hole.

If you read the nonsense on there (and other sites to be fair), you will know that there isn't much more of a standard than you believe for something to be true to be able to state it as a fact. As football is only entertainment, it isn't that important to be respected. There is no way that KM was planning to leave Portman Road, as in he was unhappy and actively wanted to leave. It sounds like he only had to accept to go to Brighton. He probably was not liked for the Chelsea job when they spoke to him and he said that he wants to help mold the club and stay for years to come. Man Utd. probably told him that it's too early and they probably won't sack Ten Haag.

its a story, its premier league news, which drives lots of clicks from around the world, its you mr so called journalist have got to write something even if its a bunch of hokum, just so the Beeb can say yep tag and it bag it its ok weve got a McKenna Ipswich story there well done, whats the next story we need to have on our site about the premier league, I dont know, how about Rashford to Arsenal.
