Szmodics is a massive upgrade on Chaplin 22:53 - Jul 12 with 7192 views | Asa | Someone who can play on the left or the right or as the lone striker. But ultimately knitting things together behind the front man he’s a huge upgrade on Chaplin. I love Conor. One of my favourite players in these two seasons. But as I have said before he offered almost nothing but goals in the first half of the season, which is fine, but they dried up after Christmas and he was completely missing in so many games. Szmodics is just everywhere. Can pick a pass, scores goals, really astute addition and it won’t remotely be instead of Philogene. It’ll be something we’ve been looking at no doubt.

At the price it's decent business. I don't think he'll make a huge impact in the Prem but would love to be proved wrong. But if it is around £6 million then it's just a good quality squad addition.

Murphy wasn’t anything special and then it just clicked for him and he was a totally different beast. Szmodics was playing in a rubbish team. I can’t wait to see what he’d do in our side. He’s not going to cost a lot in reality and is as good as we’d get as a squad player for the fee / wages. It’s a very smart move.

Szmodics is a massive upgrade on Chaplin on 00:14 - Jul 13 with 4922 views | Vegtablue | Very harsh IMO - don't think Chappers would nominate you as one of his bigger fans with that outlook. 😅 Sammie had the season of his life by a mile, full credit to him. Prior to last season, Conor had a better goals & assists record in L2, L1 and the Championship. I don't think anybody would have sensibly predicted 27 goals from the man who scored 5 in his previous campaign, 6 in the season before that. 4 assists this season, 2 in the season before, 1 in the season before that. Chaplin didn't significantly impact a number of games last season, I fully agree, but he had very positive contributions in many more games than I think you're giving credit for, including in the second half of the campaign. He was an important player for us in our late Feb - early April run, as well as finishing our joint top scorer (13) and outright 2nd for assists (8). I don't mean this to be an anti-Szmodics post, I just feel you're doing a big disservice to our current 10. For all his 27 goals, Sammie finished with season player ratings of 7.36 on FotMob and 6.97 on WhoScored. Conor scored 7.27 on FotMob and 6.94 on WhoScored. These are based on more than 300 individual stats per player per match, and they don't point towards Chappers being a massive downgrade. He is certainly ahead in performances up to age 27 aha. Hopefully they both have really positive contributions for us next season. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Odd take. To have a difference of opinion doesn’t mean someone is 1 dimensional. However if that is what it means have you considered maybe it’s you that’s 1 dimensional 🤷🏻♂️

Chappers is one of my favourite players but even I acknowledge he'll probably be used as an impact sub next season. He's the Eric Gates to Hirst's Mariner. Think Szmodics is the Alan Brazil

Szmodics is a massive upgrade on Chaplin on 08:32 - Jul 13 with 3778 views | MK1 | If he replicates his form from last season, or anywhere near, then a very good signing. Good work rate and engine, something we can never have enough of. No need for the slant at Chaplin though. We simply wouldn't be where we are so soon if it wasn't for Chaplin. Brilliant couple of season for us and deserves his crack at the top table. I would be bitterly disappointed if we don't retain Chaplin and give him his chance, which he richly deserves.

The two goals Chappers scored from Leif's crosses in front of the North Stand, one bullet header, one on the volley, are two of the best I have seen at PR. Keeper knew nothing of them until he was picking them out of the net. Don't underestimate Chaplin.

Chaplin was crucial to a lot of intelligent link up play too, particularly in that dropping deep on the right hand side and either opening up space for Burns (and sometimes then finding him with that fantastic out-swinger down the channel) or switching the play to Broadhead or Davis (see Burns trivela). Teams were also very aware of his late arrivals for cutbacks which sometimes resulted in goals, or more space for other forwards.

Szmodics is a massive upgrade on Chaplin on 09:19 - Jul 13 with 3360 views | Vic | If he’s a ‘massive’ upgrade on Chaplin, our leading scorer for 2 seasons then this will be a ‘massive’ signing. I’m not sure it will be though. What I’m sure he will be is really good competition for Chappers. It feels to me that neither of them are nailed on to make the step up to the prem (unlike Hutch, Grieves, etc.) but it’s obvious the potential is there and that KM backs himself to unlock that potential. Personally I do think Chappers will make the step up. But I’m slightly concerned by his form in general over the last 10-15 games of last season. Szmodics? No idea! Many people were singing his praises and calling on KM to sign him last December, while others were saying that he hated us so wouldn’t sign. Who knows - hopefully we’ll find out soon!
