Surprised at some of the reaction to Ogbene... 10:11 - Aug 27 with 7742 viewsitfcjoe

...and that people don't think we need him (even in main TWTD article)

When Burns doesn't play we really miss him, to the point that often Jackson would start when WB was unavailable because he matched the profile far better than Hutchinson last year.

Omari is quite possibly our best player, but profile was does not suit the RW/RM/RWB hybrid role that Burns has perfected - getting someone else who can do that was so key and delighted we've managed it.

McKenna always wants 10 for the front 4 positions, and there isn't room for Harness or Ali Al-Hamadi in that 10 for me, they just aren't up tot he level required at this stage and hopefully Ali can get there.

We are really missing Burns. Hutchison doesn’t really fill it as you say. And clearly Johnson isn’t designed to fill it. Liverpool were hating the cross ball and Burns physicality and strength in the air. When Burns came off it was easier for them to push up.

And of course McKenna likes to refresh the entire front 4 on 65mins ish. To retain the high press and energy.

So that’s:

———————- Delap (Hirst / New Guy)
Clarke / Szmodics ——- Hutchison / Szmodics —- Burns / Ogdene

What is the question is how do you start Clarke, Hutchsison and Szmodics in the same team - Sammy’s form means surely he’s a starter?!

As ever, I'd say the 'starting' isn't particularly important in our front four. Eight players (usually) will make big contributions every game in those four positions. Bit of rotation (horses for courses) and a few injuries and the 10 into 4 is a perfect balance.

This is true, but it doesn't mean that we can sign anyone and turn them into Messi!

I think I'll remain cautiously optimistic about this one, rather than excited

Hutchinson, Clarke and Szmodics aren't Messi, either, but I am delighted that we have signed them, and that they will be working under McKenna.

Totally agree - Burns's aerial ability is a huge weapon for us and gives the keeper an option to go long when we are being pressed.

I imagine people are slightly sceptical because he's ex-Rotherham and went on a free last year however we got Burns from Fleetwood for pittance - our fans would be having a hissy fit if we sold him for £8m and he's two years older than Ogbene.

Erm ok

Not sure what the relevance is, but I'm also delighted with those signings too

The relevance is that "Messi" is a once in a generation talent, whereas Hutchinson, Szmodics and Clarke are all very good young players who McKenna can improve.

Ogbene has some Premier League experience and has one outstanding attribute. If Ipswich sign him it will be because McKenna believes that he can utilise that attribute and improve his all-round game further.

You know I wasn't actually suggesting that we sign Messi or that the expectation is for any of our players to end up like Messi, right?

Just being cautious about Ogbene based on Luton fan's views

100% - Burns is such an important outlet for us on the ball when being pressed and also a key part of our press when we don't have it.

You'd prefer not to have to pay £8m for Ogbene (considering he was free last year) but I guess he's now Premier League proven and less of a risk for us.

I do wonder where this leaves Chaplin (and perhaps Broadhead) - with Omari now cemented in the central role (with Szmodics probably behind him and/or Jack Clarke) does Chaplin even make benches?

Unfortunately I don’t think CC or NB have that pace that you need at this top level. Love them, but I guess it’s part of the natural progression.

We do seem to be signing a couple of extra players on the basis likes of WB and NB are injured. Unless it has changed they should both be back around November so you would think we can cope with what we have.

I just don't want us to have a too big squad which then means we lose a bit of the togetherness/spirit we have had last two seasons.

No issues with signing another player in that position, but a quick glance at the Luton forums would suggest that they're rubbing their hands at him going for £8m and that he's all pace and no end product

I haven't seen enough of him, other than his highlights, to make a judgement. But they really don't seem fussed about him leaving whatsoever.

That was my thinking looking at the video. I'd see him as a back-up and someone KM may be able to coach to be better.

Remember that Burns was until very recently just whack-a-ball! There was a small element of truth in that his end product was always that great, but we’ve seen when he’s been absent that we really miss him.

This.

I always think that Omari's best position is number 10 personally. I don't really like him on the right as he likes to come in on his left foot and we lose our width on the right.

Szmodics will play 10. Isn't that what we signed him for?

I see him sometimes playing there and sometimes on the left as Broadhead has.

Why do posters keep forgetting who our manager is?
Ask the Blackburn fans about the job done with Lewis Travis.

You’ve only got to look at our squad, we’ve L1 players playing in the Premier League.

I don’t have a problem with Ogbene because I don’t know anything about him. But from what I’ve read, he has a lot to offer.

McKenna’s way the last two seasons was to bring on the cavalry on 60/70 mins. About four of them and more than once it killed the opposition. Against Liverpool, thanks to injuries and tbh ability his options were limited. I completely see what he’s trying to do.

For £8m it’s irrelevant what he once cost. It’s what he’s worth now how he can benefit us and what we might get for him if he moves on. I’ve no problem with it.

Have we seen enough of AAH to decide what his best position is? I don’t think so and I’d be happy to have him in the squad. He’s got something about him. Don’t know what exactly but it’s just an impression.

Omari is our best player and he could make the difference this season with the right players around him. I think he might be challenged by Clarke for best player title. He’s a really good player who rarely gives the ball away. Brave too.

Szmodics? I thought it was a lot to pay for a near 29 year old but from the little I’ve seen of him I’m wrong. He’s going to score goals.

The money figures sound horrendous, but we are in a place we’ve never been in before. The owners know their business and so does KM.

Keep the faith in other words.

I’ve seen Ogbene play multiple times and despite what a couple of people on the Luton forum say he offers a lot more than just speed. He’s also a very decent guy and always willing to learn. He is real McKenna type signing.

Yes our manager has done amazing work, but it doesn't mean that it's not worth considering the views of other fans. You don't want us to sign just anyone and hope that McKenna works his magic with them

We have Premier league players playing in the premier league. Not league 1 players. We deliberately signed players in league 1 with a high ceiling. It was well known that was our strategy

Just so I’ve got this straight. You want the club to consider the views of fans before they sign anyone?

No

I'm having a conversation on a football forum about a player we're linked with and saying that I've read some views of the Luton fans and so have considered them

Yes because on average we’ll always have two players injured in that front 10. We have three including Hirst.

If it’s not WB or NB it will be OH or SS.

Gone are the days of throwing in Jackson when Burns is injured.
