Presser on 13:44 - Aug 30 by portmanking | There's plenty out there. Plenty. |
I guess it's whether there's one who is a good enough fit for the profile that McKenna wants at the right price. McKenna clearly seems to think that Broja is a good fit for the role given the amount we've chased him. He and Ashton may feel it's better to do that deal even if if he's not immediately available than to get someone who was much lower down our list - e.g a Foster/Lathe who won't be as good a fit but might be able to start straight away.

Presser on 13:57 - Aug 30 by portmanking | The point is we should've prioritised a new #9 before some of the other new faces in the squad. Leaving a #9 to the last minute as we get closer to our FFP limit was always going to be madness. Truly *immense* pressure on Delap's shoulders now. |
Why do you keep saying last minute? We have been trying since the window opened. We can't just pick someone and say "you are joining Ipswich, end of". We have been trying for months. Don't forget Szmodics, Delap and J. Clarke. Hardly goal shy.

Agree here, we know Fotis was a really early link, but clearly he was waiting for other offers or, as has transpired, European qualification for Panathanaikos. Broja has rumbled on, we'd obviously agreed numbers, then medical has highlighted something. It's now who blinks first. If Hirst wasn't injured, and we'd just signed all the players we have, nobody would bat an eyelid. I'm comfortable of where we are. No ideal, but not every single scenario can be envisaged. Delap, Clarke, Greaves and Omari alone as 'money' signings would have kept me happy. Kalvin Phillips, Townsend, Cajuste, O'Shea, Johnson. People lose their shizzle waaaaay too easily.
Presser on 14:20 - Aug 30 with 2463 views | baxterbasics | No need to panic. Delap and Hirst will do the biz between them, along with the three AMs behind them. Any struggles, we will revisit in Jan. All good.

Presser on 13:42 - Aug 30 by portmanking | Leaving yourself short of goals is a crime at any level. It's beyond comprehension at PL level. Hirst and Delap as our main strikers? With AAH to buzz around chasing paper bags? We should've either saved more of our kitty for a top #9 if it's a finance issue now. |
What 9's have gone in this window that you think we should have signed? The market is dry from the top to the bottom of the game in that position

Now I've calmed down a bit (I'm sorry for the outburst earlier - was about to go into a very stressful situation which has now passed, so probably shouldn't have been posting) - will be interesting to see what Forest do. They're after a 9 too but seem to be scrabbling to sign someone.

Bear in mind the L1 season we started with Ladapo and then signed Ahadme as back up, and then it was Hirst and just Ladapo last season, with Hirst and Delap we are ahead of where we have been. Plus Ali as number 3 is at least passable when we haven’t had that before. Obviously I definitely want to sign a striker, and we clearly do - but we are in the position where it needs to be the right one and not just a body because we probably have just about enough to cope - I'd rather them stick to Broja than jump at someone like Latte Lath now without having done anywhere near the required levels of due diligence. We go into Broja deal with eyes wide open and he's clear one we really want.

Delap replaced moore Szmodics isn't a striker I'm annoyed for a different reason than the other poster. It's not about goals for me. We score them with our other forwards mainly. It's the holding up of the ball and the linking up with the other forward players we'd lack if we don't have hirst or delap in the side. That's all my beef is with the situation tbh. We'll have done sufficient due diligence on Latte Lath, surely? I don't think we'd make a bid for anyone that Kieran hadn't done his homework on. One of his best mates in football is his current manager. Also, do we know Ali is "passable" at PL level? What we *do* know is the lad lacks experience even at Champ level and could do with a full season playing 40+ games there before being a genuine contender to start for us.

Presser on 13:33 - Aug 30 by Blooos | If we dont sign a striker today, after what has been a brilliant all timer window, would be very very poor. We are 1 injury to delap away from being absolutely screwed. |
Hirst is likely to be back in a few games. Smozdics can play up front. That'll be 3 forwards we have. 4 if you include Freddie lol. I'd rather we wait til January than panic buy someone at the 11th hour just to appease the bedwetters.

We wouldn't have had him in for a medical though, so may find something that Boro aren't aware of

I think Middlesbrough may have a better grip of Latte Lath's health as he's a first choice striker, compared to Chelsea with their 5000 players.

Makes no sense for them to have him knocking around paying his full wages and him not playing surely? In their interests for him to come here under a manager they know develops/gets the best out of players and for him to be showing he is a player worth £30m rather than rotting there. We have Delap though. Hirst back in 3 games time. (according to Phil) If we sign another striker for £20M+, then Hirst will be our 3rd choice. As it stands Szmodics, Clarke and Al-Hamadi can step in should Delap get injured. We don't need multiples of 4 in each position. If we sign someone McKenna rates, then fine. If we don't, we will be fine. Plenty of options. Think everybody just needs to relax a little. We have spent over £110M this window.

I know it's a worse case scenario but if Delap picks up an injury (or suspension - more likely the way he plays!) tomorrow... Al-Hamidi may be an option from the bench but I cannot see him being a starter at this level. He wasn't a starter in the division below.
