making the news today and even on the front page of the Mail. Can't see why they make such big news of it. I'm sure most of the country couldn't give a toss.

I believe youll find they did, because they respected the expectations put upon them as managers of the England team to do so and all that comes with the job, and they were being paid handsomely to do so.
Let's be honest, the only reason they sung it is because they knew they'd get torn apart by the media if they didn't
I remember the camera was on Sven for the build up to the national anthem for his first game and there was a whole thing in the papers about will he or won't he.
It's ridiculous. Let them do their jobs and give them the freedom to make a choice about whether they sing or not

Absolutely agree. It’s a nothing story. Who cares if he sings the national anthem (it’s actually a prayer), hums the theme tune to the Archers or musically cracks one off as long as you are not down wind.
It’s an awful dirge anyway and since I can’t sing a note I leave that joy to others and stand respectfully, as I do any other country’s anthem. It doesn’t make any difference to me wanting my country to do well.
Billy Connolly did a superb sketch on this back in the 80s. He was very much in the dirge camp and suggested we should adopt the Archers as our anthem!
Edit:
Found the sketch. Absolutely nails it!

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

Well I think there are levels of responsibility when it comes to managing a national side, he doesn't mind taking on the role does he, you can't have both ways.
There's just no standards anymore ....
Did Eriksson or Capello sing it?

Thanks for that. I’d forgotten Billy Connolly’s sketch, but suspect subliminally that’s where I got that from. Sorry Billy!
To be fair, it is a jolly little tune!
If we are going to bother with national anthems, I think teams should play in national dress. England in Morris Men gear including bells and balloons. Germans with lederhosen, French in Revolutionary gear including those silly red hats, Scots in kilts, oversize belts carrying a set of bagpipes, Italians in brightly coloured gear with big feathery hats, Aussies as convicts with a ball and chain each and the keeper with a Ned Kelly metal bin on his head etc etc

well feel free next time your at a baseball/nfl/basketball game in America to tell all the people singing the anthem that. They get upset if you dont stand up for it, let alone dont sing it, and have had to add a line to the announcement to the crowd stand if you are able to, just to make sure people who cant stand arent given grief.
Then goto Le Mans and tell all the French people that 100,000 people singing Le Marseillais is bad , or the Italian F1 GP and tell all the Italians that Il Canto degli Italiani is rubbish, and 1km of Ferrari fans singing it at the end of the race is stupid.
its a nonsense that the English are either the only ones who care and are passionate about national anthems, or that passion is wrong
It's not that passion for your country is wrong, it's just that the BRITISH national anthem which is trotted out at ENGLAND games is dreary old dirge that was written for the purpose of bootlicking up to a bloke with a funny hat.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.
Apologies if raised already but the man was an Ireland international. Irrespective of whether his views align with the anthem (and why should pride in being English have to align with support for the monarchy?), it would be seen as markedly disrespectful by many to sing that anthem given the history between England and Ireland and his heritage.

At least the Archers theme's got a bit of go in it.

Fictional deity of whom different interpretations of have caused endless wars and even more deaths for two millennia save a very rich man who's status as head of state and riches are due to that his ancestors were prepared to inflict death and distress on others in order to gain and maintain power.
Long live a very rich man who's status as head of state and riches are due to that his ancestors were prepared to inflict death and distress on others in order to gain and maintain power. .

It’s seems totally reasonable not to sing it, he played for ROI 40 times, why would go go and belt out god save the king. He would look ridiculous and quite disrespectful toward ROI.

I haven't read the whole thread but it has always struck me as strange that England has as its anthem a song which represents the whole of the UK.
There was also a time when the Union Flag tended to be displayed at England games but these days it is the St George's flag which is correctly displayed, although the England shorts yesterday still contain blue which is on the Union Flag but not the St George's flag.

Whoa, steady on! The Archers is a step too far. I’d deport him for that.
I'ts not the English anthem, it's the British one. When England win gold at the Commonwealth Games Jerusalem is sung and I think that's much better to belt out. I'ts also the song the Barmy Army sing prior to the 1st ball of the day at a test match.

All of those anthems are about the creation of their respective republics or throwing off oppressors so have more resonance for the citizens that sing them - if we were that invested in anthems, we'd have got one written after Brexit - but when Britain becomes a republic and we become citizens rather than subjects, and a new national anthem is written, I'll definitely sing that......
