Our defence has improved immeasurably from last season 08:53 - Sep 15 with 10740 viewsMalcolmBlue

We are able to soak up so much pressure. Pretty impressive really, big test next week but if we keep performing like we have in the first few games I’ll be very happy come end of the season.

Very proud tractor boy this morning!

Well said was great to see. Candidly though I feel Brighton still did enough to breach our heroic defending more often than not; their 'expected goals on target' stat of 2.22 is a higher number than Leicester or Palace recorded in their 2-2 yesterday and is normally good for at least a goal, often three. Some brilliant keeping, brilliant defending, favourable deflections and wasteful Brighton moments contributed to a great result at a very tough venue.

Not so subtle dig at Woolfenden, your pet project …

I don’t get it. Woolfie had been good so far and will be an important part of the squad. He’s not looked out of place against high quality opposition.

O’Shea may be better, we’ll have to see.

Its not a dig at Woolfie. Thats your interpretation. I'm talking about the whole bavk four as a unit. Axel instead of Clarke, O'Shea instead of Woolfie, Greaves instead on Burgess, Davis .

If you cant see, or accept yesterday's defensive unit is by far the stronger, and . significant upgrade, then it's you that has the problem, not I.

Numerous players that have got us back to back promotions will, unfortunately, gradually be replaced over time, as the squad is improved. If McKenna was happy with the defensive unit, why has he brought in the new defenders?

Many players from that League One / Championship squad have improved,
(Woolfie included, but not exclusively so). You and a few others on here need to open your eyes and see what's going on, and accept it for what it is, progression.

Every time I post something on here, people like you turn into a Woolfie argument. Get over it, move on.

Been on and off of mine a few times. He seemed to have gotten better, but unfortunately, he has gone back to his old ways. I put him on ignore about 2 weeks ago and he will be staying there forever. Not the sort of person I want to talk to ever again. I would encourage others to do the same if they want a more pleasant experience on here.

Think we might see wolfy v Southampton.

We might get more time on the ball so will utilise his short passing game compared to o sheas longer passing.

It’s almost like Brightons coaching team identifies areas to hurt the opposition. Suffocating Morsy will stop us playing in many ways.
And when he’s up against players a level above him it’s near on impossible for him to come out on top.
It’s going to happen, probably more often than not, but you don’t go into battle without your warriors. And there is no bigger warrior at ITFC than him.

Surprised the Swedish bloke didn’t replace him yesterday tho, with mass coming on instead.

Luongo still has a part to play as a late defensive-minded midfield sub.
I think in general we read too much into game by game team selection and subs. If we are to survive and maybe prosper at this level, it will be a 25 man job.

It will be controversial. But it is me so there we are.

But anymore games like morsys yesterday and he won't be a starter.

He was terrible. Couldn't pass. Couldn't tackle. His performance yesterday was probably his worst in a town shirt.

But it was only one game.

Back to his best next week hopefully but if yesterday was a sign that teams have a way of putting him off his game then we might be seeing cajuste Phillips a lot sooner than first thought.

But. Hutchinson had a mare yesterday to btw besides that run so morsy wasn't alone. And we also played a very difficult side.

Get away with you, you old nobbler. Morsy did fine yesterday - he was once more up against higher quality midfielders and a superb press from BHA. It’s good for him (and us as supporters!) that we have the likes of Cajuste waiting in the wings - keeps everyone on their toes and means we are so reliant on Morsy being top dollars every game.

And Hutch defo didn’t have a mare! He wasn’t at his best, but he did some delightful stuff. Little end product which was a shame, but that’s more down to the experience of the players he was up against than his own fault. He’s got room for improvement of course, but he wasn’t as bad as you suggest.

I appreciate the suffocation and it was evident on certain phases of play. But I personally don't think we've seen so many miskicks from morsy under minimal pressure and he was nutmegged about 4 times in 5 minutes, and kinda had spells like that douglas video where he was just jogging around not being able to stamp his authority on the game. He had a bad game it happens to all players.

Frimmers - I missed Morsy’s Douglas moment. Please can you post the bit you mean on here so we can see it. Cheers.

Undoubtedly the personnel have improved with the new signings, but are we measurably better as a defensive unit than last season, hard to tell at this point?
We defended well yesterday, but were definitely hanging on in the first half (much better in 2nd half). We only really have the Fulham game as anything else to judge by (assuming we have to discount Liverpool and City) and we were pretty good then too, but also still conceded.

So, 1 goal conceded in two games is good.

But then at the end of last season, we conceded 10 goals in our last 10 games, which is pretty decent and comparable. Especially when you consider that 5 of those goals were conceded in that crazy game at Hull and against Southampton, that most fans agreed were probably the best team we played. 5 goals in the remaining 8 games is pretty good defensively really.

Obviously we are playing a higher quality of opposition, but with a higher quality of players in our own team.

If I knew how to cut and paste from full match highlights I would. There was just a time where the camera was focused on him and I was just laughing at the time with my son that it looked a carbon copy of that Douglas clip.

Obviously I'm not comparing the two players and I'm not at all saying that's what morsy did for 90 minutes. It was just that minor spell that made me laugh.

Thought Morsy had a poor game, agree. The early booking definitely didnt help, but thought he was caught in possession, or made poor passes out, when we had recovered possession.

But I thought he was the best player on the pitch v Fulham and agree it was just one of those games. No surprise he was the one subbed off for Luongo (again, booking perhaps a factor), rare for him to be subbed. Phillips also was really good, which probably another factor.

Nothing of concern to me, just one of those things.

Thought Omari was fine, he kept trying to get hold of the ball and was prepared to try over and over to get us up the pitch. He looks like a player whos matured into a player ready to take responsibility in the PL. Its amazing to see him develop.

Not sure that our defence has improved, so much that we've changed our approach, otherwise by the same measure our attack has got much worse. We did defend very well yesterday though, I agree on that.

It's great that we're able to grind out a point like yesterday, and we will need to do it a number of times this season, but setting up that was does massively limit our attacking threat as a result.

Away from home I think we need to do that though - basically take the low block and counter approach that so many teams in league one brought to Portman Road.

Axel and Davis are unchanged from the end of last season.

Greaves looks awesome… and Burgess is a damn good back-up.

Impossible to judge O’Shea yet, just one game, compared to Woolfenden.

So what you implied is the defence is way better because of Greaves? It probably is.

But you didn’t say that…

And btw, I hope O’Shea is better than Wolf - it’ll mean we’re a better team and I'll love that!

I don't think Cajuste will be dislodging Morsy from the team any time soon.

But it's fair comment to say Morsy had a tough afternoon. And it's also fair comment to say that Hutchinson had a bit of a mare by his standards.

I don't get why that's incredibly difficult to read. It's just being honest. It doesn't make them bad players, they just had off days, it happens.

He's just compared Morsy to an almost retired Douglas, how about that?

Not like for like. Yesterday in that 1st half our formation was basically 6-4 or 7-3. How many times did Leif go bombing forward in the 1st half two, maybe 3 times, if that had been in the Champ' his total would be nearer 10.
Clearly KM is making the defence stay in the defensive zone at the moment, that's why the forwards couldn't do anything with the ball esp in the 1st half, midfield was too far away operating as defenders.
We saw in the Liverpool game when Leif pushed forward they simply dropped the ball in behind him and it opened us up.

We're obviously learning in the Prem, and to be fair Leicester won the Prem operating in a style of we won't concede and then try and hit you on the break. Yes we had the Delap & Hutch runs from the half way line but did we create one good chance from opening them up with good passing?

We clearly have to be tight in defence, and KM has changed style this season from last to do that but even then yesterday they overran us.

So yes we need to put more players into the defensive zone this season compared with last, but we will need to get out of our half more and created chances if we want to survive this season.

Also. I didn't say I would provide a clip of it. Someone asked me to and I said I would if I knew how to cut from a full highlight video.

You also must have read the OP and the replies to and saw my first reply.. was that negative or did you somehow jump that post?
I wrote the morsy one expecting a reply hence I knew it was controversial opinion but one shared by a few yesterday and today, But at least do what the first poster did and counter the opinion rather than moaning about a post you've no interest in discussing.

Today really does bring home how loyal McKenna was in the summer... by tractorboy1978 14 Sep 2024 20:32
And what a big opportunity he turned down. They are a very good squad packed with quality in depth. The type of squad he'd be licking his lips at given how he likes to play.

For the first 60 mins or so they dominated us in the manner we did teams in L1. But to our credit we hung in there and I thought in the last half hour we gave as good as we got. Defended really well and came home with a fantastic point.

What a double save by FrimleyBlue 14 Sep 2024 15:36
Been superb today.

So it's not our usual stuff but it's still actually positive. by FrimleyBlue 14 Sep 2024 15:49
Minimised brightons danger whilst they have had their usual majority of the ball play.

We've not done much at all really have we. Look a bit lost today.

Hopefully a little chat at HT get the whiteboard out well help.

Morsy defo not a good day. On and off the ball he's had a bit of a mare.

Think this is the first time you see how morsy and Phillips as a pair whilst could work well it can also be a problem... when our front three press. Neither morsy nor phillips are coming forward so brighton have an easy out in the middle.

Szmodics and hutchinson not really getting the chances to be a threat. Delap isn't really being presented with opportunities to hold the ball up or spin.

Burns.. inside the first minute we got what I said earlier a long diag.. we've not seen it to him since. Why not? He's open He's asking for it.

A point away to Brighton is no mean feat by FrimleyBlue 14 Sep 2024 16:57
Still a long way from KM football. But it's a different type at the moment and I'm all for it.

Some silly individual errors in the forward line and midfield today which didn't help our efforts with the ball.

Lots to work on. Relationships to grow

But a point away is always a lovely point.

Brighton had chances or course. As they should.
As did we

Next game is massive. No not a must win but we do really need that first win.

How nice was it to see Hirst come on by FrimleyBlue 14 Sep 2024 17:50
He just gets the system. Knows his job and does it well

He doesn't have to have done much himself on the ball to make a difference. He understands the press but in a way that's not even about pace it's direction.
