I am starting to be a bit worried by him starting on the left. Looked good on the eye v Villa but yet to see anything from him otherwise. Very poor in last two, just looks terribly lightweight, pushed off the ball far too easy and struggles to make much of an impact in tight spaces.

And before anyone comments it, no I'm not writing him off

My biggest concern is that the defensive side of the game feels like an afterthought. There is always a delay before he remembers he needs to track back and get us in shape.

He does seem to give very little cover to Davis, we know he will get better going forward but we leave Davis exposed defensively, particularly when the opposition are in transition

Only Clarke, worryingly for me only Woolfy and Delap looked up for it today from those who started.

His defensive contribution is awful, and his attacking isn’t far behind.

I wouldn’t have him ahead of Broadhead if we were in the Championship, let alone pay £15m more than we did for Broadhead.

Looks like a flyweight trying to box with the cruiserweights.

Concern is one of the main reasons he didn't make it at Spurs was his lack of tracking back. Sunderland fans always said his weak point was failing to track back.

But Hutchinson had the same problem at the start of last season but Mgr & coaches corrected that, they can do the same with Clarke

A case of buying championship players, and getting championship performances.

The issue is we are playing one of the best touchline hugging wingers about as an inside forward. It’s not his game.

Weve signed a player who is very good at one thing and are asking him to do something completely different to what he’s done. It makes 0 sense to me.

He looks like a player we used to loan in after they'd had a good season 2 years before.

Leif Davis record assists in the championship for a fullback, now playing with an inverted winger infront of him so zero chance of being used on the overlap. Complete madness.

McKenna has lost the plot.

Yeah, tbh at the time I wasn't as excited about him as a signing as others were - made a lot of sense why we were after Philogene but Clarke always seemed a slightly awkward fit when we use Davis to provide width on that side. Why it makes perfect sense to have Szmodics on the left coming inside despite what dim people say.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

Jack Clarke is a super player. No doubt in my mind about it. You can see it as well in flashes. He can drift past players at ease, he can carry you up the pitch as well as anyone. But where he really does his damage is playing on the touchline, drifting inside.

I thought he would cope in that role better than he has, but we really aren't maximising the talent of a really talented footballer.

Ditto Szmodics. Top Championship scorer last season cast out at sea playing ineffectively out wide. Blackburn already did the difficult task of identifying his best position, so why aren't we utilising it?

He needs a goal to kickstart his confidence. Such a massive massive shame he couldn’t take his chance today (for multiple reasons)

He looks like he will win a few pens but has shown to be very lacking in tracking back and has not been clinical which is what we will need to be - his free header last game over the bar and skying the chance this game should have been goals - we need to click and find rhythm and a bit of confidence but I think we will suffer same as Burnley / there are just not enough games quickly enough to get any rythim and before you know it Christmas has gone and you at 8-10 points adrift

I presume McKenna is trying to keep us solid in the middle of the pitch and force teams out wide.

However having J Clarke inside left means he just keeps having to leg it back as their is an easy ball out left for the opposition all the time.

We just haven't found a balanced team yet. For me you play Clarke wide left rather than have him running around chasing things. I get Leif on the overlap but no reason why he can't go on the inside of Clarke too.

Has looked well below the level to me. Him, Muric, O’Shea and Phillips underwhelming to say the least so far.

Muric managed to pass the ball behind him today and out for a corner. Takes some doing that.

Whilst he's not set the world alight I'm more concerned we're trying to find out whether a midfielder can find the form from 4 years ago.

For the life of me can’t understand why he was our choice.

He makes our playing out from the back style look like we are a L1 team trying to do it against the big boys

We’d have been better off signing Sarmiento who at least could play in our system. Clarke looks devoid of confidence which was highlighted by his miss.

We are using him complexly different to the way Sunderland did.

Sarmiento non singing was the biggest shock for me. Seemed to be that KM player who he could develop but was also handy already and loved a tackle as well as doing things with the ball.
