Thought he was impressive today. Positive and direct in his play with a good final ball which can sometimes be questioned. Looked sharp.

Good first half, don’t think he touched the ball second half did he? Don’t remember his name once but still think he has a bit to go and get more confidence in himself

First half was ok put some crosses in but I wish he tried to beat his man. Second half hardly got a touch. On that showing I'd prefer Johnson there.
I like Hutch on the right but he's also our best number 10, so need a new jan signing for the right with Ogbene out

Crossed the ball for Delap's back flick attempt on goal.

I disagree. Think he lacked ideas when faced by the opposition full back. Seems to need a lot of space to be effective which they gave him early on. Szmodics and Hutchinson are well ahead of him in my view

He was ok. He is quick but cant beat his man with skill. If he worked on that he would be much more dangerous.

I agree he faded a little going forward second half but we did a little as a team. Part of Burns' job is to free up space for Hutchinson too and he did that well.

Football is all about different opinions I guess, but I thought he was probably the weakest player on the pitch for us. Seems to have lost that zip and confidence to take players on. Definitely not the Burns of the previous two seasons, but to give him the benefit of the doubt, he may have been told to play a slightly different type of game. He kept letting his man get passed him too easily, too many times in the first half. Much better attacking threat second half when he went off and Hutch took over on the right. To me, he looks like a player struggling a bit with the step up, which is understandable. Hope he improves though, as he could still be an asset to this team.

It's really tough for Burns at this level even more so with his injury. You can tell he still isn't 100% as he was getting easily turned at times which isn't wes.

He put in some excellent crosses tho. Right in the mixer and utd hated them.

For me. I don't think he can improve enough to be a regular starter without injuries bringing him into the fold. But at least when he does you know you're gonna get effort.

Utd got smart after the first 20 minutes and started to cover him so he didn't get the space he had before and when that happens there's not much wes can do to effect a game other than tidy up and help with some short passes.

a niche perspective

....I thought he was probably our least effective player today.

We need to strengthen the right side in January, at the moment our best right winger is also our best "number 10", which is a bit of an issue.

Came on to say this - wish he would try to beat his man a bit more.

I felt the same but on the flip side his delivery was effective in many occasions and his decision to thread a little inside ball to Omari worked out well.

He does work hard and I think some of the unseen things helped us today.

It's certainly possible to upgrade that area at Prem level. A really good squad player though.

Quietly effective id file that under.

Good post. I'm not saying he was incredible but having struggled so far this season I felt he did well. He was involved in quite a few decent moves first half and caused United some problems. Not perfect but a more promising performance in my view.

Didn't run at his man at all. Got turned at the same place and way at least 3 times. His deliveries were consistently poor, bar one, which was excellent for Delap's 2nd half flick.

I think he's really struggled this season.

He had a decent game, I think he has been asked to adapt to not take risks perhaps.

I just want to see one of his classic gridy celebrations, in the Premier League.

Personally think he might be tactical instruction not to take his man on unless he has the space to do it. He's not the most technical and if he tries a take on and it fails there's a big gap behind him that the opposition player is running into.

He created 4 decent chances today and was probably unlucky not to have a least one more assist.

Got an assist and could easily have had two. Was a threat in the first half but got caught three times by a Dalot feint and drive. A mixed bag but I thought he did ok. Creates a lot of space for other players, particularly Hutchinson. Not all of the good work he does is on the ball, so I think you're being slightly unfair.

I don't think we had a least effective player today. Well, not until the subs came on.

Edit: Could have had three assists. Just watched MOTD.

He doesn't burn PL full backs for pace in the same way he did in the Championship

Dalot did look surprisingly quick though in fairness, I wasn't expecting that

Thought he gave the ball away too often in very bad positions for us, wasn't standing up to challenge for the ball as much as others were, yes he created some chances and assist for the goal, but do they balance out...I wasn't unhappy to see him subbed.

And the pass zipped in to Omari for the goal, and the low cross whipped in for Szmodics to turn over, and the pull back for Szmodics to test Onana low down to his right.

But apart from that….

I think the problem he is having, is that he is not able to beat his man at this level very often, which is then further affecting his confidence & decision making.
When given the opportunity to run at pace, into space, and get a decent delivery in, he is still effective and can zip in a dangerous cross or cutback; but in a one v one where a technical piece of trickery is needed to get past a winger or fullback, he just doesn't have that ability at Premier League level, & invariably loses possession in the process, sometimes in dangerous positions. This pace he used to his advantage in L1 & the Championship, is not enough against very quick PL defenders.
What has also struck me is how surprisingly soft he has been in his challanges, mostly losing out as his opponent pushes forward. Of course he has pace & can get back goal side to block an attack, but I rarely feel that he is going to get a tackle in, certainly not one that is going to win back possession, these days.

Sadly I thought he looked out of his depth as he has done in all the games his played this season and to me looks like a player who can’t make the step up in class. Such a shame as his been amazing for us the last few years

Certainly don’t think he looked out of his depth, like others pointed his crosses should have amounted to more goals than they did, he also done an amazing track back to get it off the feet of some one in our area at one ping in the game. He isn’t as effective when teams are playing deep which manu were but think he needs to have more belief in him self at this level.

This is fair. He did plenty of good things in the game. He contributed and i like him as a player. He’s a good character, team player and one of those who is better than he looks on tv, especially if you see him up close.

It is hard to tell because PL players are in general quicker and stronger, but I do wonder if he’s lost half a yard of pace. It may be that not playing week in week out he’s short of match fitness.

Regardless of that perception, he is a valuable part of the squad and like the rest of them, did fine yesterday.
