Now that the club has confirmed Morsy chose not to wear the armband, how do our LGBTQ fans feel about this?
Like I say I would continue the interesting conversation we were having but that thread is locked.

In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

Yup. Wouldn’t fly in any other walk of life.

I'm fine with letting players decide if they want to wear stuff like this or not, there shouldn't be pressure. If it's a Stonewall initiative then it's a political statement. Much like taking the knee. And yes before anyone says it, for consistency, I would say the same about the Poppy.

I bet the club wouldn't have been so relaxed about it if Morsy was a practicing Christian though.

I wonder on how this would affect how he’d be towards an openly gay player in his team.

I imagine he'd treat him respectfully like he does everyone else.

And homophobic, sexist and racist. Hence these initiatives.

They all come under violent and abusive. My point is just be nice. A multicultural society can be a complex one because it's hard to understand something you're not part of at times but one thing we have in common is we are all human so just bring together these campaigns and send a message that everyone should just treat each other with respect regardless of gender, sexuality, race etc.

It's not a very tricky situation. GAY = Good As You. No iffs, not buts.

It's still a tricky situation - you could be accused of implying that accepting the LGBTQ+ society is more important than accepting muslim beliefs.

Impossible situation to solve IMO. Shame for all parties.

Sadly I think this situation would make it less likely for a gay player (or member of coaching staff for that matter) to come out

I would argue that accepting the LGBTQ+ society is more important than accepting Muslim beliefs. People do not chose to be gay, it's who they are. Religion is a man-made construct.

Apologies I normally agree with more of what you say than not but it’s a bit rich digging out the OP for causing the club trouble when it’s Morsy that had actually done that by deciding he can’t support an inclusive initiative alongside every other captain in the league.

He is putting himself first and the club have had to issue a statement because of it. Surely that’s worthy of discussion?

It's been discussed... over 6 pages. The club haven't issued anything new.

Morsy can't take part in the gesture due to his religion, but he also isn't going around preaching hate speech or attacking anyone. In fact he's said absolutely nothing on the subject.

I'm not sure what more there is to say.

Dragging it out over multiple threads does nothing for the club we all support. The OP also posts this every year. If it's not meant to cause trouble then what is it? It's certainly odd for the same person to be posting the same thing year after year, knowing the result will always be the same.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I'm not sure I accept the religious defence of Morsy here. I'm pretty sure he had a child out of wedlock, which would suggest he's quite selective in which parts of Islam he adheres to.

I think it is more tricky than that. is a Muslim with unagreeable beliefs about homosexuality not "Good As You"? As that seems to be the upshot of your two posts...

We have this same issue at the club where I volunteer. It has the pride flag on it's shirt, and idolises St Pauli - its a left wing punk club. But we've recently had an issue with a Muslim parent complaining about that badge. Given the club sits in a very Muslim area, whats it to do? (the big wigs answer is engagement - stand our ground, but don't minimise the concerns of some of the locals it's supposed to serve)

I think it's fairly obvious what it is to do, the religion should be bending to the law of the land and the parents complaint should be getting short shrift (although accept engagement and standing ground is a better approach)

And we'll disagree with what we want, especially when it's in the interests of our club.

What if we have a gay player in the ranks, who has concerns about coming out, and that is affecting his mental health and performance on the pitch? Or they could be a promising youth team player who ends up not fulfilling their potential longer term. Our own Harry Kane drops by the wayside. Do you think our club captain refusing to support the cause will be helping the interests of our club?

"our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain’s armband, due to his religious beliefs".

Can we please stop validating discriminatory religious beliefs that belong in the dark ages. Not matter which religion it is.

This.

Remove the word "religious" from that sentence, as its utterly irrelevant. I personally really enjoy Agatha Christie, but my favourite choice of fiction is no more valid than Sam's or anyone else's.

So the sentence becomes "our captain Sam Morsy, who has chosen not to wear the rainbow captain's armband, due to his beliefs." Which is the same as saying "Sam Morsy is a homophobe, and that's a-ok with us."

I'm ashamed. I am ashamed of my club and its captain. The club I've supported as a boy - the club of my grandfather, father, mother, brother, and two sons. A club that has now said "James, its perfectly fine for Sam Morsy to hate your brothers for who they are just because a really old book told him to."

The previous thread had some great contributions to the debate on both sides (smattered with some comically naive ones too) so its a shame it was locked. Will be even more livid than I am now if its turns out its the site acquiescing to pressure from the club again that caused it.

Human rights trumps religious freedom and has EVERYTHING to do with football.

Not wearing an armband doesn't mean you'd treat a teammate disrespectfully.

The only facts we know is he's not prepared to take part in a gesture. It's literally not doing something. There is no suggestion that he'd go further and do (or say) something that is disrespectful to a gay player.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

I would strongly defend everybody's right to freedom of religion, but that doesn't mean I accept their beliefs, how could it unless I shared their faith? Homophobia is homophobia, regardless if it's said by god or the tooth fairy.
