Phillips 11:55 - Dec 15 with 5182 viewstractorboy1978

Do we know what the issue is? We haven't heard any more than a knock have we? Been fit enough for the bench in the last 3 games but not got a minute on the pitch.

You'd normally expect a club in our position to be trying to rush back a player of his calibre who is costing us a large chunk of change to have here. But seems we must be really trying to manage him and get him fully fit behind the scenes?

If we can get him at his best in the second half of the season, that is almost going to be like a new signing for us and should make a big difference.

"If we can get him at his best". Why us? Are we not paying him enough? Maybe it's up to him - not us.

We've put a lot of faith in him as well as a big chunk of cash. What we are paying him and his calibre - he should be the first name on the teamsheet. I know some are a bit star-struck by him being here, but I'm still under-whelmed.
It's great he seems a good squad member and was celebrating yesterday, but we didn't get him to be a happy squad-filler - we got him to make a difference on the pitch and be our best player. Maybe even replace Morsy as inspirational leader. Sorry, but now he's slid behind Cajuste and Taylor. Don't want to piss on anyone's chips after a rare win, but I want to see more from him. If its possible to cut the loan short in January and maybe add more to the coffers to get a new striker and/or RB, I'd do it in a shot.

He’s been injured and still carrying a knock. I think In the new year he will prove to possibly be our most important player

There was an article on here in which Phillips very honestly revealed he’s been working on his confidence and a few other internal emotions/feeings since being with Town.

To me, it sounded like he’s not just getting back to physical fitness but has a few other issues that he needs to work on to be back to 100% best.

Have you not been paying attention over the last nearly 3 years? We improve players. The medical team will know exactly how to manage him and he’ll be back when he and KM think he’s ready.

While I agree with your overall sentiment, not sure the medical staff have covered themselves in glory this year.

No I haven't been paying attention over the last 3 years how we've rehabilitated ex-England footballers to their former glory..... and paying them close to 100k a week whilst we're doing that? Can you list these footballers of similar backgrounds to Phillips that I've been very negligent in remembering for the last 3 years. Sorry, for being so dull.

How to put a totally unnecessary negative spin on a situation where no one knows the facts.

I don’t disagree re the medical bods, but a factor has to be the players we’ve brought in. Hirst, Broadhead, Phillips, AAH arrived with a problem, Cajuste to name just five all known to be on the fragile side. A balance between ability, fitness, availability and cost?

If he is ill i hope he gets the help he needs. On the footballing side i don’t think we can rely on him being available based on his last two seasons, so if we are paying big bucks we need to look at the loan deal. Maybe a
Conversation with man city can be had and they can loan us another of their up and coming

We need to get a tune out of him if he’s costing what he’s allegedly costing. £5m a year to sit on the bench isn’t mathing when finances are finite.

Sorry, I wasn't expecting an argument on semantics. As with every player, it is a combination of both parties working to get him in the best place to play to the level he has proven he is capable of.

I think it’s a fair point to be honest. It’s all very well improving players but if we only get 10 good games out of Phillips this season that’s £500k per game if the reported money is true. We’re not a charity, we’ve got to allocate our funds in the right way and so far Phillips hasn’t justified his place. I don’t think it’s controversial to admit that.

I do wonder if McKenna feels that Morsy and Phillips together doesn’t give us the right balance in the double pivot. Therefore it’s one or the other. That would mean he hasn’t fallen behind cajuste or Taylor, it’s more one of those will take one position and Morsy/Phillips the other. I wouldn’t be surprised if Phillips next comes in when Morsy gets his suspension, or instead of him for one of the Arsenal/Chelsea games.

He was on the pitch celebrating with everyone else yesterday. It was obvious that he’s well integrated and liked by the squad, certainly not a loner, several players were involved with him, he looked delighted. Would be great to see him play more, but he’s far from an outcast.

He would be great for closing out games, very surprised he isn’t used eh v Bournemouth, yesterday, When we need to be solid and hold a lead.

I wonder if that rash challenge v Leicester has put him in the dog house for a bit and he needs to earn trust again as that cost us 2 points, however soft it was. No need to risk a yellow.

The only Muff in Town.

A friend was talking to him at David Lloyd a couple of weeks back and he’s still not walking freely, hopefully break over Xmas and no need for us to force him to play minutes and aggregate things when Morsey, Cajuste and Taylor are performing well will get him up to full recovery.

The issue is he got a ban, then an injury, and now Cajuste has made that position his own.

A very crude analysis of this year vs. last year would perhaps indicate a failure to adapt training and personal programmes to the increased demands of the PL.

We are (I think) first in the in the injury league this year. Without looking, I'd wager we were somewhere near the bottom of that league this time last year.

I agree with this. Both yesterday andcagainst Bournemouth last week he would've seemed ideal to come on for the last 25 minutes. If he's not fit enough for that, then Luongo needs to be on the bench instead.

I don't think Cajuste is known to be on the fragile side. 39 games for Reims 2 seasons ago, 26 for Napoli last season, plus plenty of games for Sweden. (That's not to say he was 100% when he arrived in Suffolk.)

He’s on the bench because we have no other cover and professionals have to play when called upon even when not 100% fit.

Can you give a case where the medical staff have not done their job? I am assuming you have some professional expertise that leads you to that conclusion.
