Right wing options... 09:18 - Jan 28 with 7759 viewsitfcjoe

...bearing in mind we like to recruit in the Championship

Tom Fellows (WBA) - We were allegedly in for him in the summer, U21 so doesn't count against squad cap. England U21 international. Played a fair bit of the left last season (scoring against us) but now an out and out RW who can play all the way up and down that side

Dan James (Leeds) - feels a very good fit to replace Burns, lots of experience both in club and international side. Searing pace, good defensively when he needs to be. Likely very expensive as a key man for Leeds and they won't want to sell, limited upside to fee but probably most ready

Milan van Ewijk (Coventry) - more of a RB than a RW, but again blisteringly quick and decent going forwards. Not masses of output this season, but been ever present for Coventry. Been linked with Galatasaray and Fulham this window so presumably is 'available'.

He seems to have turned corner over last 2 seasons in that regard, his numbers for goals and assists are really good in the minutes he's had in Champ over last couple of seasons.

Oh has he, didn’t realise that.

In that case ‘Dan James is a blue…’

I replaced Burns after a few seasons with Van Ewijk on my Football Manager save- a very comparable selection in my opinion, has the best bits of Burns and Ogbene!

Tariq Lamptey should be one we’re all over. Fits our model very well, still young and hindered by injuries. Absolutely rapid, would be a great signing.

Linked with Leicester as per below, so I’d like to think we could compete.

Tariq Lamptey. Out of contract in the summer and Leicester linked.

Would be perfect.

And a couple from abroad:

Ilay Camara (Standard Liege) - Rapid, decent ball carrier, and eye for a forward pass. Again more FB than winger so may not be right profile

Anan Khalalli (USG) - Similar to Camara but bigger and probably a bit more robust

If we’re looking at USG we need to sign their striker Franjo Ivanovic, bags of potential. As for their right wing back, Castro Montes is better than Khalalli

Him or Walker-Peters would both be decent signings.

I imagine Dan James will feel joining Ipswich is a big gamble. Good chance of Leeds being in the Prem next season, and us not.

Surely someone outside the relegation spots would take him?!

I was thinking Rees-Mogg. Could he play the old school Whitton role?

He only comes with Nani, who’s getting on a bit now.

Best option I've seen yet based just on a few youtube videos! Dribbly, but more physical and unpredictable than Fellows. Buy.

I'd be delighted if we took the Wimmer way.

I’m dribbly and unpredictable after 8 pints. And a lot cheaper.

Seems the obvious answer. Especially with the more defensively robust Axel behind him.

No from me. Would always be slouching on the bench.

Broadhead. Clarke. Hutchinson.

Plus Johnson in a more defensive set up.

Surely that’s enough options? Our squad seems bloated enough as it is.

None of those play that role in the same way as Burns or Ogbene though - which is the way we have played all season. And this has arguably been our weakest position in the team all season too. We wanted Doak even before Burns got injured.

Omari will do backed up by Johnson.

Or switch Philogene over.

We cant just keep buying players

Unless we are looking at building up or attacking in a different way, Clarke and JP work for me in the RW/RWB role. L10 covered by Broadhead and Szmodics, R10 by Omari and Chappers. That still leaves Ben Johnson covering RW /RWB, meaning there is a third cover right across those position.

If we look outside, Wimmer looks interesting but no idea whether he fancies a change, but power and pace are biggest attributes that will make a difference compared to what we have.

So you want Clarke or JP to play in a completely different position and role than they've played previously in their careers? I don't see in anyway how they fit that position.

Firstly love your tone but secondly you do need to go back and relook at where these players have played. I’m not saying anything more than there is cover in the squad, that’s the nature of the squad we’ve built and if we look at outside options, I put forward a player of interest.

I missed Enciso from the R10, he could be a serious player to the end of season.

Indeed I think they have both played wide right a fair bit and for sure in Clarke’s case he seems to be more comfortable the wider he plays and seeing as we don’t play with a left winger I think your suggestion makes sense.

Reckon Enciso is probably good for either of the 10 roles to be honest too.

The 3 could easily be JP right wing, Omari R10 and Enciso L10 and that would also give you the chance the vary by swapping Omari to the right wing and putting JP L10.

But Burns role isn't a R10? It's more of WB / RW role that's looking to get in behind.

From an attacking stand point, I don't think we've got anyone in the squad that can play that role with Ogbene and Burns injured. Johnson is OK and can do the defensive side relatively well, but actually getting in behind with pace and getting to the byline for cut backs, there's no obvious options which is why you'd assume we targeted Doak earlier in the window.

From what we have available I'd say Philogene is the best bet - he generally played there for Villa this season (including putting in an excellent defensive performance vs Bayern). And played there a fair bit for Hull last season and was basically solely a RW for Cardiff and Stoke over previous seasons - although not sure how balanced the role was without watching them back.

Jack Clarke broke through as a RW at Leeds, and played there for Spurs and Stoke, but since leaving Stoke in summer 2021 to go to Sunderland, he has only played their once in all that time and with his defensive capabilities seems a bit of a non starter for that role.
