He's good but difficult to play well on the bench. Been saying it for ages and ages but he really needs a run of games now. We have to do it.

When you are fighting a rearguard action you are always going to give away free kicks like that. I thought Phillips was vital today and played well. Villa are strong in Midfield and we competed in that position today unlike a few other games. Would like to see Kalvin get a run in the team now. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

He did a lot of decent stuff but he really needs to stop this habit of diving in on the edge of our box.

Correct. If we’re going to stay up, he needs to start every game now and if injury free, he’ll be instrumental in lifting us out of the relegation zone.

That's unfortunately a consequence on what can happen with his role or who ever is playing in that situation of wave after wave of attacks. He'd been asked to try and nick the ball when ever the opportunity presents itself that imo , he managed well many times today but likewise a few he didn't. He will no doubt give away further freekicks in future if we are under the cosh as much as we were in that end half today. Phillips v morsy on interceptions etc is a massive difference in Kalvins favour. But those figures come with risk. https://footystats.org/players/england/kalvin-phillips https://footystats.org/players/egypt/sam-morsy

"He'd been asked to try and nick the ball when ever the opportunity presents itself" Had he? Where have you heard this? I think you're talking nonsense again Frimmers. It's not a consequence of his role, it's either not being quick enough (in thought or physically) or bright enough to know when to tackle and when not to. That's not a 'role', that's football. You're taught when you're a kid not to dive in and give away cheap free kicks on the edge of your own box.

I think when you have 10 and having to run hard yards against a top team you really wanted to disrupt and make the game as bitty as possible. Ideally you win the ball or commit fouls a bit further back but at the same time we're buying a bit of time and energy rather than continuously chasing the ball. You take your chances with free kicks somewhat.... Im probably over simplifying this a positive and I'm sure some could have been avoided but I think generally he would have wanted to engage as much as possible and accept some fouls to disrupt any rhythm. Don't feel it is nonsense flash. He's role is to Intercept the ball and the consequence of that is at times it may lead to fouls especially when you are encountering those opportunities at a fast rate. He's never going to win every single ball cleanly every time. It's not specific to phillips btw. It's pretty much anyone who plays the cm role. It is my opinion of course and I'm happy for you to disagree but ut would be nice to discuss thoughts without the need of calling the other persons thoughts nonsense.

I find it hard to believe that he would have been told NOT to try and nick the ball whenever the opportunity presents itself. Hardly seems a controversial statement?

I don't see Cajuste giving away cheap free kicks like Phillips does. Look, I've said he played decent and if he could cut those out he'd be a world beater again. It's frustrating, that's all, especially the one that led to the goal. Frankly he was nowhere near winning the ball.

That's a false equivalence. Frimmers doesn't know "He'd been asked to try and nick the ball whenever the opportunity presents itself". He has no idea what Phillips' instructions are. That doesn't automatically mean I'm suggesting he'd be told NOT to try and nick the ball whenever the opportunity presents itself. I imagine he wasn't told "rashly dive in and if you can't win the ball just take the man, it doesn't matter, the freekick probably won't come to anything" either!

Agreed with all this and was thinking the same. Ultimately you're gambling that your defence can win their duels in those situations and if they do, it takes 2 or 3 minutes off of the clock whilst giving your players a breather. I suspect he was told to be aggressive as you say and to attempt to win rhe ball and make things as bitty as possible. A decent game for him overall and for me he's a far superior option than Morsy who just doesn't have the legs for this level unfortunately

Very happy with Phillips on 09:39 - Feb 16 with 3476 views | Len_Brennan | To appreciate how good Phillips was yesterday, ask yourself what did Tielemans do over 94+ minutes. He is the control room of that Villa side, with some exceptional attackers in front of him to link with & thread in on goal. Phillips was on him immediately, shutting off passing opportunities & angles & tackling him to win possession. He is one of only a few players we have that can go into a 50:50 (or less) challenge & come out with possession (Enciso too, so hopefully his injury isn't longterm). I thought in possession Phillips was good too, commanding & purposeful, playing simple passes when he needed to. I'm looking forward to getting to see a recording of the game later, but for me, he was MOTM for the first half alone, and #2 to Palmer over the 90. [Post edited 16 Feb 9:42]

Very happy with Phillips on 10:21 - Feb 16 with 3386 views | MK1 | One of his better games for us, but they all have to stop giving free kicks away in dangerous positions. Thought he would be the calming head next to Morsy and Cajuste, but the free kicks keep mounting up. Like I say, better from him, but we will still need more if we are to stay up.

False equivalence. Posh phrase! Think you are digging. Of course Phillips is trying to hassle, tackle, nick the ball. It is what his position demands. He was excellent yesterday AND yes the free kick he gave away was the one that led to the goal - he wasn't perfect, rarely does that happen. And the goal could have come from many other free kicks. As a comparison: Palmer could have been sent off early on. Wasn't, thankfully. Always, always, a game of margins.... and opinions.

I actually agree with you on Phillips, you don't see Cajuste giving away the same number of these. However you're arguing semantics just to win an argument that you've created out of nothing - Frimmers doesn't know what his instructions are, and neither do you. It really shouldn't be that controversial that people speculate on a forum about what the manager might have said.
