All in all Starmer did well. However, I do wonder if he was able to establish exactly how the war was to end. A war that Trump has bigged up about ending .
No, nothing on that at all, which is the main urgent issue at the moment. Or at least not what we’ve been told. And something as big as that would have been reported.
I don’t imagine Starmer could have done any more. I’m surprised at how positive the reaction has been to a meeting where we’ve only got the word of a serial liar that there may be a free trade deal somewhere down the line (that will take years and at what price?). I suppose he didn’t get treated like Zelenskyy or threatened with nukes, so there is that!
We have a trade surplus with the US so if they imposed tariffs on us we'd just reciprocate and they would lose more than us.
This belief that America can act with impunity needs to be challenged. Sure America is the big player in the western alliance but they need allies too. China for example would surely become emboldened if that alliance became fractured.
Maybe one trick would be for Europe to start making overtures towards China. Change the dynamics of power and see how Trump likes it.
Regardless of policies, Trump, Vance and his appointees and backers are just not nice people in the sense that they behave in a way that no other President and his entourage would even contemplate.
In my view, Zelensky acted perfectly properly, showed class and remained calm in contrast to Trump who got redder and redder, and angrier and angrier, with Vance clearly spoiling for a fight.
Looked at objectively, Trump humiliated himself but will blame Zelensky and may well end up ceasing all support to Ukraine out of spite, which is really what Trump's backers and supporters want.

Why was Vance even in the room? He is not the President. Never been to Ukraine. Loathes Zelenski so there was no reason for him to be there, let alone piling in.

I don't disagree however I think Zelenksy has played this absolutely horribly. It was cringe to watch Starmer yesterday but he played it well. Unfortunately Trump is somehow elected to be the most powerful man on the planet and his ego is the size of said planet. You simply have to play to his ego or you can not get anywhere.
It's not about agreeing with having to do that. It's a disgusting fact.
Trump is just a bully - despicable man.
But sadly I think Zelensky let his emotions get the better of him.

Obviously Trump and Vance have no respect for Zelensky. Their aim is to replace Zelensky with a fake Ukraine election and carve the country between them and Russia. If Putin takes Ukraine then they will acquire all these supposed precious rare earth metals.

As if to prove the point I made in my opening paragraph (and from a man who thought the election was stolen)
Typical schoolyard bullying from the masters of MAGA. Should have thrown Musk into the Fray as well. Trump was bad, but Vance stole the show by acting like a thug and gangster talk. I wonder if they speak to Putin like that too.
Trump’s reporter goons even had the gaul to question why Zelensky wasn’t wearing a suit and said it cheapened the Oval Office.
Musk of course does not wear a suit…

Trump has apparently announced he is immediately withdrawing all help from Ukraine after today’s meeting
“ The Trump administration is considering ending all ongoing shipments of military aid to Ukraine after a meeting between Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump in the Oval Office, the Washington Post reports.”
Trump also said at the end “This will make great television”
"Trump: It’s going to be a very hard thing to do business like this." "Vance: Just say thank you."
If ever two sentences summed it all up. Subservience and what they can get out of stepping in. That's all they've ever been after. No care whatsoever for the human cost.
They could have out him right on the some of the nonsense he's been spouting. Such as Ukraine starting the war, Zelensky being a dictator, etc. Keir Starmer seemed more concerned about asserting we have free speech in the UK.
Actually now you say that about freedom of speech - it was Vance that brought that up yesterday, and Vance that launched the first salvo on Zelensky today. My guess is that that is a deliberate thing.
Starter refuted the accusation and then held back. Zelensky, unsurprisingly as the leader of a country that’s had millions killed and 20% of his territory occupied, couldn’t do the same.
