Highlights are everywhere these days - you can get highlights of pretty much every Premier League match within an hour or so of the final whistle.
Yes MOTD is a handy one-stop-shop package, but it needs a USP over and above just showing the highlights in order to encourage people to tune in. I find it an interesting watch to see the bits and pieces that didn't necessarily make the 3min highlights reel, but can be subject to interesting analysis and comment.

The rationale does seem to make sense.

To be fair, a lot of the complaints you read from MOTD viewers are about the punditry, not the highlights.
I think MOTD still does the best extended highlights.

If I watch it, which is not often, I fast forward through the "analysis" to get to the highlights. Doesn't everyone?
I've got to THAT age. 5 mins seems to take forever and 30 mins is over in no time. This means I miss the start of most programs. IPlayer lets me do exactly what Meadowlark does, jump over the mutterings of Emery, Amorin and skip most of the analysis to the next game. I can do instant replays too 'cos it has a back 20 seconds option. I can be 10 minutes behind the TV program and go to bed 30 mins before the end.
Of course, MOTD next year will be F'wicked sweet awesome 'cos we've got Gaby Logan and Kelly Cates presenting.
Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

With the exception of Sky the others seem to be having a competition to see who can get the worst group of pundits in football.
TNT have even ruined Ally McCoist by having Rio Ferdinand with him in a three man team now.
The TNT one is weird. Darren Fletcher and McCoist are a good duo for me, but for some reason they like to have Rio chiming in every couple of minutes with inane childish comments, it almost seems like the other two have to humour him at times.
It really wouldn't surprise me if the BBC padded out the analysis with some recreations of game incidents via the medium of interpretive dance from the BBC Strictly dancers.

I fail to see how they can apply the high level of talking down to the viewer (required for all BBC programs) with such a format.

'Highlights everywhere' was apparently the rationale behind their suggestion, but an off-the-cuff poll of listeners' views texted in this morning to R5l showed 100% of them, like others on here, wanting *less* punditry & more highlights.
What annoys me most about MOTD is when a showing disallowed goal they have to do the whole VAR thing , just say it’s been disallowed and move straight on with the rest of highlights no need to show the ref going to the screen etc etc.

Clough also pointed out at the time that the poring over controversial refereeing decisions via slow motion replays would undermine the respect for referees - something that his sides were also noted for. I shudder to think what Clough would have made of VAR!
If it's Joe Harts analysis then please god no. That guy is super dull and only does analysis of things which are totally obvious and adds no real insight. Possibly the worst pundit ever.
I honestly don't know why anyone that is half IT literate would watch it for any reason other than habit. You can watch all of the goals/key incidents within an hour of the final whistle on Youtube in about a quarter of the time MOTD lasts. And you don't have to endure Gary Lineker's pomposity and sh1te jokes either.

Spot on
I don't watch MotD as I've seen all the highlights that I want to see online already by the time it comes around

Yes, I can't remember the last time I watched it. I don't think I have this season unless it happened to come on. I certainly haven't made a conscious decision to watch it. Probably haven't for many years.

I suppose in a way that's what the BBC chairman is saying - they need to provide a USP in order to get people to watch in this era of instant highlights. I never find the level of analysis massively insightful (I think Hansen was better, and that was a long long time ago), but I guess if they have more time for analysis then maybe they can provide something more meaningful.

Whilst I totally agree and it's utterly tone deaf to understanding the needs of the actual audience, and I actually thought the best recent episode of MotD was when all the pundits went on strike and all we got was highlights.
You've got to remember the Beeb are losing a battle in terms of declining audience figures, lower licence revenues and still paying the likes of She-Ra nearly 1/3rd of a million quid to sit on a sofa and punditicise.
So the PHBs only strategy they can come up with from their rubbish business school degrees is we've got to do something different with this show "to attract the younger audience", which they obsess over rather than the core audience. They cant imagine just doing the same thing better, because they dont watch this stuff its just numbers on a spreadsheet to them, And this is their idea of do stuff different.
