I did think it was brave of him to criticise Southgate. I don't think it will go well if he intends to get England playing samba football. It might be better to watch but it will be less effective if he does. If he manages to both get them playing it and succeed, fantastic but I can't see it myself.

I rarely enjoy watching England for that very reason. I flipped over to Comic Relief. Good cause but good grief. Settled on Ian Dury on BBC4.
Anybody notice the change in style of England tonight? on 21:56 - Mar 21 with 2527 views | Pique | Very, very ponderous and predictable tonight. Rashford is incapable of doing anything other than cutting inside, so even an Albanian full back has him figured out after five minutes. As for Foden, I genuinely forgot he was on the pitch. Two bits of class from Bellingham and Kane saw us through, but there's an awful lot of work for Tuchel to do. Lewis-Skelly was a big positive though. [Post edited 21 Mar 21:59]

Anybody notice the change in style of England tonight? on 22:14 - Mar 21 with 2436 views | NthQldITFC | As someone who couldn't give a monkey's about international football (except I'll jump right onto the bandwagon if we get to a semi), can anyone tell me why some of these qualification groups have three teams, some four, and some five? Seems most peculiar. Is it some kind of wnkaerish money-making scheme by FIFA?

He’ll realise soon enough, that you can’t alter the plodding, physical, laborious and overly deliberate nature of English players and turn them into replicas of their technically superior Spanish, Argentinian, Brazilian, Italian counterparts just by talking a good job. Expecting an immediate spike in performance against opposition that comes to defend for 90 mins is a bit optimistic. He’ll hope to replicate Southgate’s recent runs to semis and finals but instill that little bit of risk, belief and positivity, as opposed to the fear that paralysed the team when they got within sniffing difference of the prize.

I thought that the other day, so looked it up. All a bit convoluted but because of the nations league malarkey the four teams playing in the final stages of that slot in to the 3 team leagues. Or something. So they'll all have at least 4. All a bit ridiculous, the 48 team world cup means 16 European teams get through.

The ones that currently have three will have four later. Eight teams are missing at the moment, their grouping is to be determined by their performance in the Nations League.

CR used to be quite good (Im thinking 30 years back maybe) but its now turned into something approaching ITV telethon levels of cringe. I kind of wish theyd just played the Utterly live stage show from 86, as I remember that was actually quite funny at the time.

True, but we really don't help ourselves. Playing Foden and Rashford 'wide' made us so predictable - cut back inside, channel the play through the middle every time, which is exactly what a team playing a low block wants. Luckily for us Bellingham picked a brilliant pass through the congestion to set us on our way, but we won't always be able to rely on that. Good to hear that Tuchel recognised the problem afterwards though, and it sounds like those two won't be getting too many second chances. Rashford's not at that level anyway currently, not sure what he's doing in the team in the first place. And Foden as anything other than a 10 doesn't work, so he needs to learn to suck it up and compete with Bellingham for that role in the team.

Compete with Bellingham and Palmer for that role in the team. Unless Bellingham is played deeper, it really looks like like only one of those three can be on the pitch at the same time.

Anybody notice the change in style of England tonight? on 16:42 - Mar 22 with 1140 views | michaeldownunder | Playing with three No.10's will never work and with some times Kane dropping deeper we had 4 No.10's. Just like the old days trying to play Scoles, Lampard and Gerrard in the same team will not work. Dan Burn at c/half had an ok game but as soon as they brought of a half fit forward he looked very nervy. I understand his attacking threat at corners but some of his defensive heading was very weak, he could not seem to get any distance with them. We know that Albania were going to sit deep so wide players were needed rather than Rashford cutting back inside most of the time
