Vanity Project 08:01 - Mar 24 with 4628 views | Blue_In_Boston | Danny Murphy & Tony Cascarino both suggesting that us and Southampton have disrespected the Premier League by refusing to change our styles of play, thinking we could out-football teams. Murphy accused both managers of running vanity projects of their own ideals rather than adapting, or cutting their cloth to get the best out of what they have at their disposal. Harsh, true, or a little bit of both?

Vanity Project on 08:30 - Mar 24 with 3533 views | bsw72 | So a manager should change their style and approach and has achieved their success to date just for the perceived “glory” of staying in the Premier League? I’d rather have a manager true to themselves and with personal integrity to stand by what they believe in, rather than some weird notion of having to respect the PL. Danny Murphy needs to be careful he doesn’t disappear up his own arse soon and form a tiny black hole of self importance. [Post edited 24 Mar 8:40]

Vanity Project on 08:37 - Mar 24 with 3455 views | Churchman | As posted in another thread, I loathe Danny Murphy beyond all other pundits and let’s face it, there’s some stiff competition there. The term ‘full of sht’ fits that annoying berk perfectly. As for Cascarino, I actually met him a few times in the distant pass. Really nice bloke, but as thick as mince. If you were building an idiot, the dormant organ between Tony’s ears would be a good starting point. As for their witless drivel, it’s completely wrong.
Vanity Project on 08:42 - Mar 24 with 3397 views | Dubtractor | In an ocean of bad pundits, Danny Murphy is a standout floating turd. There are lots of reasons we're going down, but we've clearly tried to change our approach, especially away from home where we've made some games a pretty tough watch with very little goalmouth action from either team. And Southampton have completely changed their style under Juric, becoming a much worse team in the process. [Post edited 24 Mar 8:43]

If we changed to a purely defensive team, as bad as we tried under Mick McGiven, Danny Murphy would be the first complaining we're disrespecting the Prem for that. The tw@t.

Vanity Project on 09:04 - Mar 24 with 3201 views | Guthrum | Misses the point that, for the bulk of the season, we have been competitive in matches and at least in touch with staying up. All the teams ahead of us have had two seasons or more of consolidation in the Prem (with commensurate player purchasing power). As others have pointed out, there's no way we could afford the complete renovation of the squad needed to radically change style - or been able to attract enough players of sufficiently high quality. As it was, we did spend a lot of money on the defence. While it has been a lot bigger gap in standard than I was expecting, there is still an over-sanctification of the Prem by the commentariat. Especially considering much of that is based on club spending, some of it possibly dubious*. * Or actually so, in the cases which have already led to sanctions.

Vanity Project on 09:10 - Mar 24 with 3121 views | Garv | Arguably true of Southampton/Martin, but it's harsh on McKenna. I think you could say he's been naïve in thinking he could out football teams at times, but not disrespectful. We could have been better served playing more games like we did against Chelsea/Arsenal, but we haven't just played out from the back all season, we've played long on lots of occasions. I don't remember any calamity goals other than Muric/Cajuste against Newcastle. The counter argument is that playing a more physical 'defensive' style might have been pointless as it didn't suit the players/squad we have, which then goes back to the recruitment debate - did we deliberately recruit in the way we did or is that just the market we were having to shop in (more likely)? Vanity Project on 09:22 - Mar 24 with 3014 views | Vaughan8 | As others have said, in a pool of really poor pundits, Murphy is one of the worst. Usding words like disrespecting shows they don't really know what theyre talking about. We don't really have the players to play a more "solid" system. Up until recently, we've been in most games and arguably haven't got the points we've deserved on a few occasions. Some of the poor defending and gift of goals isn't really down to the system. I'm guessing this all stems from them thinking Kmpany didn't change his style and got the Bayern job, so now anyone who doesn't change, its self centred and looking out for themselves. Possibly copuld be true but I think finishing say 14th in the league would be a lot better for say McKenna than the way this season has gone.
Vanity Project on 09:24 - Mar 24 with 3007 views | itfcsuth | Just a load of nonsense - we have certainly adapted throughout the season. We opened the season up with our ultra aggressive press - but Liverpool showed quality to slice through us second half, which was probably an eye opener. followed by the adapted low block approach in both a back 4 or 5. In no way shape or form have we tried to 'out-football' teams - we've been adaptable to our approach, at different phases within individual games. It's not a complex scenario, we just don't have the quality. [Post edited 24 Mar 9:27]

Danny 'name drop' Murphy, he was a decent player to be fair probably a bit underrated but certainly suffers from Shearer syndrome which basically boils down to doing very little research I do think McKenna needs a plan B, probably and should make subs earlier but his recruitment hasn't worked out quite as well as he would have hoped and that will effect his ability to alter games as well Muric was the wrong call Philogene whilst very talented will be a slow burner Clarke is a similar story Phillips and Cajuste I like but we could have done with more agility through the middle. That was an area I was keen for us to address in the summer. We have been unlucky with Ogbene who will look mustard in the Championship. I can't get my head around the number 9 situation which has been a massive balls up imho

Vanity Project on 09:46 - Mar 24 with 2810 views | Linners | They might want to spend some time talking about how the PL is disrespecting the rest of football, but I suspect their sponsors wouldn't approve.
Vanity Project on 09:50 - Mar 24 with 2765 views | glasso | Drastically changing the way we play would mean even more drastically changing our playing squad, which would mean spending even more money - which is the other thing pundits seem to be slating us for. It's almost like they want any talking point that doesn't include the question: "Is the Premier League actually ruining football in this country?"
Vanity Project on 10:04 - Mar 24 with 2707 views | giant_stow | You lot are taking this to heart way too much. It's become completely normal for teams getting relegated from the Prem to be deemed to be disrespectful of the competition, just be dint of being sh1t. For us, it was that we didn't spend enough - the outrage!!! Its boring & predictable slur that cherishes ignorance of the context.

The No.9 problem I think simply comes down to finding someone available, of sufficient assured quality (we already had a punt in Delap), within our price range, with the right mentality, likely to remain fit (not Broja) and willing to come to Ipswich (Ioannidis wasn't). That narrows the field considerably. Going abroad doesn't guarantee they'll be any good in the English Prem (differences in standard/style). We just ran out of options and time, not wishing to load up the transfer/wage bill with someone who wasn't even predicted to be able to do the job.

Vanity Project on 10:23 - Mar 24 with 2544 views | blueoutlook | This is why Danny Murphy isn’t a manager. He talks utter bollox most of the time. A lot of the pundits on tv now l just can’t be bothered with. I tend to just watch a match when they kick off, then switch it off at the end. Can’t be doing with their utter nonsense.
Vanity Project on 10:59 - Mar 24 with 2304 views | Herbivore | They have to trot out this kind of nonsense because the alternative is to admit that the Prem has effectively become a closed shop. If they don't blame newly promoted sides for not doing it right then they have to face up to the reality that the gap between the top two divisions is now effectively not bridgeable without either breaking PSR rules or performing a minor miracle.

Vanity Project on 11:27 - Mar 24 with 2105 views | Blue_In_Boston | It's not disrespected more underestimated in my eyes. We have changed our style slightly, there's a lot less playing out from the back than in those early games, that was crazy, bordering on arrogance considering the quality of some of the presses at this level. I thought we would do better to be honest, but with hindsight we got successive promotions by scoring shedloads rather than being solid at the back. Concede two in the Premier League and you would be lucky to come away with anything.
Vanity Project on 11:27 - Mar 24 with 2106 views | OldFart71 | Pundits really make me laugh. They will talk about what a striker should have done when presented with an opportunity to score, they will say that a goalkeepers positioning was all wrong when he concedes a goal and they will state that a manager isn't using his squad to the best effect. But they have never been strikers, never been a goalkeeper and haven't a clue about management. They will point to a bad tackle by a defender and yet when they played taking an opposing player out by whatever means was part and parcel of the football they played. A majority of them are monotone and have as much charisma as something that crawled from under a stone and probably a smaller brain.
