A day when everyone is happy politics wise? on 08:32 - May 20 by redrickstuhaart | Thats a fundamentally flawed analogy given that dementia is an old age thing and BSE was not. |
BSE very much tended to effect older cattle. It was caused of course by feeding beef products to cattle. Now rightly banned. I appologise without reservation to those I have offended by my blunt statement. That was not my intention

Atypical BSE affects aged animals. Most cases of classical BSE are diagnosed in cattle 3–6 years old. The incubation period after exposure is ~2–8 years, and animals as young as 22 months have been diagnosed with BSE. https://www.msdvetmanual.com/nervous-system/bovine-spongiform-encephalopathy/bov Classical BSE is the one caused by prions and under discussion here.

Not if you are a fisherman it isn't. Fish and chips used to be part of a staple diet in the UK. You need to take out a mortgage for cod and chips now and allowing the french and whoever to fish our waters whilst signing up for some rules that we did away with via Brexit isn't a good deal. Starmer is anti British, anti farmers, anti , O.A.P.s. In fact if you don't traditionally vote Labour he's after you. Without doubt the worst Prime Minister in history, Chamberlain excluded and the bunch of idiots that are in his Government are just as bad.

Isn’t the fishing agreement reciprocal? British fisherman can fish in EU waters and vice versa.

Yes. And cod doesn't come from our waters, it's usually fished further afield. I'ma spect this poster may not be entirely reasonable and balanced in their views based on the overall tone of the post.

we have cod in British waters, usually during the winter months. There is a lot more though in the wide open spaces of the North Atlantic and Barents Sea.

You could have triangulated its position to work out where the immigrant fish had come from. My daft mate, Harry, was good at that. Once, Silly Old Harry Caught A Herring Trawling Off Aldeburgh. (Sorry, probably the worst maths joke/pun ever on TWTD ).

The rising prices are due to a rapid decline in cod stocks in global fishing grounds (breeding age female fish especially). We get a lot of fish from the Barents Sea, which has had its 2025 quota cut by 25%. Furthermore, Russia and Norway share that licence and we’ve obviously imposed tariffs on Russian imports because of the Ukraine situation. And then the EU/Iceland/Norway quota in the North Sea/North Atlantic has also been cut by 20%. l Plus import costs have risen because of the additional bureaucratic costs of not being in the EU. And fish and chip shops use a lot of energy; the price of which has soared while energy companies make record profits. It’s a shame because we were making good progress in the recovery of North Sea stocks, so I find it very sad that we’re still over-fishing other areas. These are wild animals after all and not farmed*. They have to be protected if we want any left in the future. Sentimentality about traditional diets unfortunately has to take a back seat. I think it’s beyond Starmer’s control to sustain fish stocks globally in the face of over-fishing. It’s mightily expensive now, agreed. *Edit - just to add, in the supermarkets the last time I looked farmed salmon was more expensive than wild cod. Do the ‘material price’ is probably not unreasonable, or at least in line with farmed fish. [Post edited 20 May 18:28]

I would like to know who is balanced in their views. Not many I suspect, you have allegiance to one party or another. That doesn't mean you agree with everything they do and if like the Tories you get a lot wrong over 14 years people vote another Party in. Labour are about ten months into a five year tenure and they have already p*ssed off vast swathes of the country by their ill thought out policies. Trying to say deals that they have done with the US, India and now the EU are all good for the UK. We will see, but people who are far more intelligent than myself are saying these deals are giving far more than we are receiving and whilst I concur with the attitude that some just say this because it's not their Party that has negotiated these deals it will no doubt all come out in the wash.

I dont have allegiance to one party or another. Your comments are Trumpish. "Peopel tell me that....." therefore it must be true. Seriously. They have partly repaired a small part of the damage done whilst maintaining the status quo on fishing. Thats seems fine and fair.

The vote for Leave during Brexit (17.4m) was nearly twice the numbers that voted Labour (9.7m) in the last general election. Tread carefully Sir Keir. [Post edited 20 May 20:11]

And those figures have moved on dramatically. The latest YouGov survey on it shows 56% believe leaving the EU was wrong and 32% that it was right with the trajectory of that division being increasingly in favour of membership of the EU. https://yougov.co.uk/politics/articles/52211-britons-back-closer-relationship-wi But don't let facts get in the way of your point.
