Jens Cajuste.

Would be a rubbish replacement for our captain who has been basically ever present given he couldn’t manage a 38 game season, let alone a 46 game season. I’m really not keen on the idea of expecting him to play Saturday Tuesday

This one really hurts. Regardless of who we sign, it's going to feel like a massive hole in the squad.

Truly impaired.

Who gives a sh1t?!

He's under contract and has done very well financially out of us too - having been plucked from the lower end of the Champ.

Make him play out his last year.

Yeah that's a really fine way to treat your iconic captain.

I repeat - if he doesn't want to be a bit-part player and continue setting training ground standards, why would we want to keep him under duress?

Well let’s hope Town don’t struggle without him next season… otherwise people will look back at this and get the hump.

"I repeat - if he doesn't want to be a bit-part player and continue setting training ground standards, why would we want to keep him under duress"

Do you know that to be the case?

And even if you do - I would say to him that while we are incredibly thankful for his immense contribution, he and has family are now in a different financial stratosphere compared to when we took him from the lower reaches of the Championship - when he could reasonably have been described as a journeyman.

So, Sam, please can you stick around another 12 months, help us with a transition and we'll make it worth your while if you can help get us back up.

Ps if you have no intention of honouring a contract don't sign it.

Think whatever happens, we need replacement(s) in pronto. This leaves us with basically three central midfielders.

Matusiwa who you'd expect to basically be the new Morsy.
Taylor who honestly has yet to impress me.
Humphreys who I don't think is ready for a promotion pushing side.

At minimum we need another 2.

Do we really think McKenna and Ashton don't know we need 2-3 new midfielders if Morsy goes? They've been planning this rebuild for months.

Somebody mentioned Travis earlier in the thread. Think that would be a very good idea.

Would love to see him come back along with Jens and/or Ruiz.

At least with Travis and Jens we would have a bit of continuity.

The first part I make you right.

The comments from McKenna only last month though clearly stated he felt Sam would be here this season. So that part has only changed in the last 2-3 weeks.

I'm sure every window we've planned for, but things happen and sometimes you miss your targets.

It's quite a big ask still.

Hopefully Matusiwa lives up to the hype and softens the blow big time. From his interview and supposedly style etc he may become a real cult favourite with us, fingers crossed.
Taylor doesn't cut it in any form for me. 2 years under McKenna and he has not improved at all. To me, 2025/6 Morsy is head and shoulders above the best possible version of Taylor which makes the though of Sammy going even worse.
Cameron Humphreys is an interesting one. He looks like he 'could' become a really good player but, if we go back to the Premier League this season, will that be good enough for us next season? I think if he is in our plans he needs a lower midtable championship loan where the terms are totally loaded to the loaning club if he plays each week may be the best bet. He develops at a reasonable level and we can worry about the future for him at the end of the season.
Also agree, min 2 in. I would still like Gus Hamer if we could prise him away - him and Matusiwa would be something else.

He’s been a fantastic player for us, and would have been useful next year, but it does seem (by the signings/links) that he was going to be more of a rotational player this year.

No grudges held from me on him going, and I wish him well.

Unpopular probably, but I never felt a huge ‘connection’ to him, so I don’t really mind from an emotional level; but we absolutely wouldn’t have got to the prem. without him.

On an emotional level, most certainly. Also in terms of leadership.

However, as to the football itself, all good things come to an end. Time and age can only be defied so long. Especially as we are looking to up our level and intensity to hopefully win promotion and match Prem teams over the next few years.

One would hope that Matusiwa has been signed as a direct replacement - and will turn out to be as good.

Morsy has been a key player and outstanding captain for us in his time here.

A really, really risky move - I was already very worried about our CM recruitment and how much we needed to do, and it just got harder.

We still need 2 absolute A grade players in there - not going to be easy to get done.

Whatever Morsy's thoughts, I would have had him play out his contract, it's only another year

Moving the captaincy out of midfield (probably to O'Shea), will lessen the weight in those positions and maybe allow us to get younger players - with development potential - in there.

Devastating blow, so gutted to lose Sam (n/t) on 10:52 - Jul 15 by catch74

It is a huge blow but..

He’d now be second choice in his position, Matusiwa is clearly a leader to - vice captain to Robben at Groningen so often wore the armband as Robben regularly injured. This at the age of 22.

As NThqld said keeping him this season against his wishes could affect his chances of a final lucrative contract. I think the club have been very good at allowing players to move on if they’re not fully on board with their position in the squad.

I think also having been a bit deflated at being unable to complete in the Premier league I feel the need to embrace the changes that will hopefully help if we make the step up next season.

The risk is that there’s no one through the door as back up to Matusiwa or as first choice along side him. I think if we can raise a few tequilas by the end of the week then it’ll feel squad wise a lot less worrying. Well not replace what SM has done for the club over the last few years - thank you Sam Morsy.

Good to hear that Matu is already leadership material too.

Did Humphreys beef up a bit last season? If so he's probably top Championship backup quality and maybe physicality now, but quality as he can be, not sure he'll ever be tope Championship starter or PL physicality.

So for me, backup this season IF he's stronger than he was.

We're obviously confident of signing at least two more quality midfielders.

Two out of Ruiz, Hackney, Morton or Cajuste will do.

Personally I’d still love to see Downes return!

I think he’s pretty robust and maybe filled out a bit - and the great thing is he can cover a number of positions, so great sub material. Still wouldn’t be surprised to see him out on loan again though.

I agree. Half the Champ can sign a nice £8m midfielder or two. We have lost a lot of what dragged us over the line last time – Morsy, Luongo, Axel, Burgess, maybe Burns depending on the condition he eventually returns in. There is no evidence yet that the rest of our squad is able to do that. We will be ok eventually but I sense we are in for a rocky start.

this group have a lot to learn and prove still. I can't hand on heart say they look like a battle hardened group and it was one of the things Farke highlighted as an advantage last time we went up.

Not being able to give him the proper send off he deserves is the bit that I think is hardest.

The bloke is single handedly the most important player we’ve had in an Ipswich shirt in my lifetime. To get us to the premier league from league 1 will forever be a miracle.

Ah yes, he would be for you youngsters. We used to have players that have done what Sam’s done - real leaders and quality players who propelled us upwards. Jim and Matty Holland and before them Warky and then the greats back in Robson’s years. And plenty of others who were here for less time like Mogga.

Time flies and I sometimes forget how long our barren spell was. Bloody Marcus Evans! .

A huge part of the double promotion, pivotal leader, a test for McKenna... on 14:56 - Jul 15 with 302 viewsunstableblue

... and the squad.

You cannot underestimate how important he was to the turn around in Town fortunes, yes Cook brought him in, but McKenna teamed closely with him and they both drove the team forward.

He has been an inspirational figure on the pitch, leading vocally, and through his performances.

Thank You Sam.

A new dawn was needed, 34 in September. And pace is now key in that central role. Big test for McKenna and the likes of O'Shea and Matusiwa. Can we keep the drive and hunger going without the Egyptian King?
