Hackney medical is happening tomorrow (Thursday). Still hasn’t agreed yet but is getting there. Impressed by McKenna today and his ideas so I’m told.

Personal opinion (and from what I’ve heard today from my pal) is that he’s hoped an Everton or the like come in as he knows he’s good enough for Prem football right now. His stats have him as one of the best under 23 midfielders in the world. That said, if nobody comes in for him, playing for us as a likely top 2 team and playing for McKenna is still a huge step up. It’s not that he’d be rejecting us, but more that he’d be rejecting the championship. Which makes sense.

I think we get him. And he takes us to the prem which is what both parties want obviously. Would be some bloody signing. Uppa Towen.

Edit - And the other interesting bit I got about the transfer itself was that the reason they accepted 20m on the second bid as a package is because the outright original fee is a big chunk rather than instalments as is often the case. We’re giving them a proper lump which they (Middlesbrough) were apparently all for. Hackney pissing around and taking his time does us (in case someone else comes in) and Boro (as they want to spend the money on other plays) no favours whatsoever.

That’s all i’ve got folks for now

Fantastic news Rommers.

Great stuff. Cheers. I keep wondering if, to get it over the line, there will be some clause in the agreement to allow him to move on for a certain price if we don't go up. A bit like with Delap.

Surely something like that would get the deal done.

Cheers Rommers.

This may seem arrogant (apologies) but we're not really in the same league as Boro. Well technically we are, but everyone knows that practically there are a top 17 in the PL, an in-between mini-league of 6 (Us, Leeds, Burnley, Soton, Sunland, Leicester) and the rest of the Championship. There's a possibility this year that Brentford could drop into the mini League. And in that mini-league, we are probably in the best position of all to break out and into the top 17 (Leeds fans may not agree).

From a Hayden Hackney perspective, this must be seen as a half way step to the PL.

I really admire your optimism (there's precious little of it on here sometimes), but I can't see how we're best placed to jump up from our mini league into the top 17 PL teams, when three of that mini league are in the PL this season and we're not?!

Yes Sunderland and Leeds are definitely ahead imo. They were the two genuinely big clubs outside the PL. They have the support, stadium capacity and name recognition to instantly feel like they belong near the middle of that league. We didn't have the clout to pull off a Granit Xhaka transfer last summer, no shame in that. He was starting for the 2nd best team in Germany last year! We'll need to rely more heavily on our smarts to break through.

The Championship is now a sea of medium-sized clubs with varying recent success, pocketed by a couple of over-achievers and oddities (e.g. 3-stand Oxford and Ryan's Wrexham, no offence to those two). I count 7 or 8 current PL members who match that profile.

I think the top 17 in the PL may breakdown a bit this year. A lot more of the sides like Bournemouth, Brentford, Fulham and Palace are losing their better players, plus with manager changes at Brentford etc we may see some of the more overachieving “smaller” PL clubs struggle this season and allow the likes of Leeds and Burnley more hope than we had.

Not Sunderland this year. They are still rebuilding and don’t have the squad depth or know how that Leeds and Burnley have.

Could well be the case - I haven't see half their overseas acquisitions play tbh, but I wonder if Xhaka has for him to take that leap of faith. I'd put both ahead personally because they're future parachute clubs at worst, while the rest of us inc. Burnley are missing the status to turn us into survival favourites in any opening PL season. We need our Rocky moment and then it would hopefully get much easier.

I'd assume the terms themselves have been agreed. It's just a case of him holding out one more day to see if a Premier League side comes in with a bid. Work Friday being bandied about earlier in the week, I imagine either or both Town and Boro have set a deadline for him to make a decision, so they know where they stand. I presume Boro's caveat would be he doesn't agitate for a future move this window if he doesn't join us.

Fairly sure we could have pulled off a transfer like Xhaka last season if we wanted to. We just decided not to spend £25m over three years on a 33 year old of questionable temperament.

Sunderland while having a big stadium etc, were in theory behind us in terms of squad development etc too at this stage. They feel like another who have come up maybe 1 or 2 seasons early and are about to be found out (like us). Plus they lost arguably their two best players on promotion too.

Maybe (do wages help arrive at £25m? Believe transfer fee is £13m + potential £4m). If we go up next season, I think we should look to poach starters from the best clubs in the best leagues in the world, even if they're dipping into their 30s. A sprinkle of genuinely elite talent could make all the difference, even if they provide little resale value. Maybe we tried this in Phillips, just in reality we were loaning a player who struggled to get a kick for West Ham.

I have a feeling it'll be much closer at the bottom this year. Have to say Sunderland have made some exceptional signings so far, Adingra is class and the lad they brought in from USG – Sadiki – has a massive future ahead.
