Were we this arrogant when we got into the Championship? 18:45 - Aug 4 with 5798 viewsKievthegreat

So I was seeing what they were saying on the Birmingham forum about Akpom and this one caught my eye:

"Win-win for us. If he goes to Ipswich, then they're getting a player whose commitment to their cause is such that he was happy to go to perhaps 2 other teams until he gets swayed by a team with 1 fluke season in 20 that couldn't give a toss until they found some spare change to throw at him, and would be a deleterious influence on the squad. If he comes to us, he wants The Project."

Reason I find it amusing is that Birmingham are the same project as us, but 2 years earlier. Our "Fluke season" is basically their plan going forward. Now I get that they've splashed the cash in league 1 more than we did, but did anyone here really think that players should pick us over Leicester, Leeds and Southampton when we got to the Championship?

I remember being confident about us being a dark horse play-off team when we got back to the Champ and people pillorying one of the football podcast-y people who put us finishing 3rd (IIRC) and giving them a lot of stick because he was a town fan and obviously biased.

Not really a big deal, but just thought it interesting how the landscape has changed for the teams too big for League 1 when they get back into the Championship.

Their fans have been so arrogant all over social media haven’t they, I watched a bit of the documentary on Amazon and it was embarrassing. Brady comes across as an awful bloke who knows very little about football, and with a massive ego.

I think most of the fans thought we’d be easily top half and potentially have a play-off push last time if I remember?

What we did from February to the end of the season in League 1 was better than anything that lot did, and we didn’t spend £35m on players either, plus we were up against better quality opposition.

Anyway, I would absolutely love it if we turned them over on Friday.

Anyone using deleterious on a football fan page is so pretentious they may be in danger of disappearing up their own’arris.

I often wondered what happened to Bully. Now we know.

Hasn't their 'Project' so far involved them sacking their manager while fifth in the Championship, appointing a useless celeb replacement and then getting relegated to League One?

This - brought Rooney in because he was a big name and got him to try and play tiki-taka football without a pre-season and with a squad that couldn’t pass a stool. Then they plummeted down the table and sacked him. Blamed it on them not being ‘winners’ or ‘ruthless’

There’s been a LOT of noise from Brum; their club admin was taking a jab at Forest at the weekend, and they were parking buses outside Villa Park saying the “city is blue”. Add in the money/ Tom Brady factor and they’re going to have a lot of attention this season. No idea if their squad is legit but their fans will be rabid and loud for a few weeks at least. Hope they fall flat on their asses, obviously.

Only really fussed what happens to them in this forthcoming game. If we get a draw from an up for it St Andrews with buoyant confident team further strengthen then it will be a good result.

No idea what will happen to them after that although I think they will be challenging for the play-offs at least, but I also don't care. We need to do what we need to do and the rest of them can sort themselves out between each other.

More classics

We can dress this up how we like, but we are missing out on players to rivals like QPR and Ipswich. Nothing clubs.

Nah, down to a straight choice us or ipswich. Only one winner. We are on the up with momentum strengthend our side a club going forwards. Ipswich are on the way down. They've lost it. The place is a dump. If we match the wage offer from Ipswich he signs for us.

If we sign him, he will be a good third choice striker for us. If he doesn’t, thats ok, if he is the starting striker for Boro or Ipswich, I think that shows how much further ahead we are than them.

Admittedly there are a lot of balanced comments but I think some of their fans are as annoying and arrogant as Leeds, and that takes some doing.

Rooney was an awful decision. It was obvious he wasn’t very good despite how much he apparently impressed people with his communication.

They’ve not got a lot to be arrogant about. They spent a fortune to buy their way to promotion. Anything less would have been a failure. I thought we’d spent enough to get out of that league, but they spent about 5 or 6 times as much as us.

They're spending and banking (in revenue) a lot more than is normal for a Championship club without Prem money, on top of the great din coming from ownership and now via Amazon, so it's definitely a different feeling for the fans to feed on. Presumably a lot of financial favours and Brady bootlicking aka commercial deals is behind this revenue surge of theirs, which allows them to stay within the funny rules.

I'm hoping their Japanese stars don't share some kind of telepathic connection for each other's game. Unsettles me when I see a few players from a less heralded country in the same team - have they spotted something the wider football world missed! Not surprised to see them so high in the betting but any Town fan would be mad to want to swap squads as of August 6th (when Cajuste and Akpom are unveiled 🤞).

Some of our fans were, tbf. I remember on that Championship Facebook group there were a loud group of Ipswich fans who did us no favours at all with their posts.

Every club's got them, and they're always the loudest, unfortunately.

I don't particularly like Birmingham City but can hardly knock 'em for being upbeat about the season. If you can't be excited after what they've been through the last few years, then what's the point?

I still haven’t forgotten the way they behaved when we lost up there in the League Cup twenty four years ago!

My experience and i've heard a lot of people say the same, is that Brum are a particularly unpleasant fanbase. They will not be gracious with any success or failure this season. Bes to tune them out if you can.

Amazing how reasonably sized clubs in League One feel they can “do an Ipswich” upon getting promoted to the Championship.
Their entitlement and sometimes arrogance is quite funny to see. I remember Portsmouth being talked about this time last season and that a Second promotion being a possibility.
Fans seem to think that throwing huge sums of money on players is the answer. We recruited really well, particularly under Paul Cook to be fair but it was the togetherness and spirit from top to bottom that led us through from League One to Premier. I won’t be surprised to see Birmingham go well this season but talk of Top Two, Top Three even perhaps above 8th is premature I’d say.

Think it's just a bellend football fan using bellend logic to make himself feel better about his tinpot football club getting merced by the mighty ITFC.

That’s hardly helping our rep!

I did find myself the other day talking to a Watford fan and he said “you’ll struggle without Delap” and I said “we have Hirst, who is probably the best striker in the championship, plus we’re loaded and we’ll get some more top players in”.

I winced afterwards and thought “wow, when did I become so cocky about our club”.

Fine line between confidence and cockiness.

Social media simply amplifies those who post the most. A bit like inside the actual ground, those who shout the loudest are the ones who get remembered.

We have fans who are complete bell ends on social media just like any other fan base.

I don’t think that majority of Town fans were arrogant or overly-confident when we were promoted back to the championship. But when ME initially took control there were a lot of fans who thought that we would walk the league - I think I did as well.

Particularly ironic given that Suffolk has rolling countryside, and Birmingham can’t even afford to empty their bins.

Football is constantly evolving and a club that's upwardly mobile needs to do the same.
But it's not easy as you buy and sell players in order to improve. But you can never be sure even if a player such a Cajuste will be as good and influential as they were previously.
Where your new players will gel and be better than a Morsy or whoever.
That's why you have peaks and troughs in a club's existence and only those that can sustain a certain level even if it is not as good as in the past may still survive and eventually rise again.
