Kasey McAteer - here we go! on 09:26 - Aug 22 by megnuts
Mentioned yesterday on here but I like this. A perfect squad player, versatile, a very good character (take a read of the Leicester forums), knows a lot of the boys here so can be integrated quickly, already fit so can contribute straight away. Nothing wrong with this at all.
The negativity is a bit ridiculous. Not even kicked a ball for us yet. Get behind the lad!
I don't get the over emotional reaction to the fee either.
We paid £20M for Hutchinson after one breakthough season when he had done very well for us, but was still an unknown at the top flight and had yet to break into the U21 England side. Forest have now paid £37.5M for the same player with a little more PL experience and some U21 caps / U21 title.
We are paying £11.5M for a full international with about the same experience.
It seems to be the market rate for a young player at the level we are shopping and I'll reserve judgement once I see how McKenna develops him.

I'll be in a minority here and that is absolutely fine.
I think this is a really astute piece of business. Headline figure 'feels' a lot but this is a 23yr old, a fee over 3 yrs (leaving headroom for more business) and a player that has a lot of the attributes that KM looks for and we need.
I've not seen huge amounts of him but what I have seen is decent, his return in the Championship is decent as a wide player, chipping in with both goals and assists and I think KM will develop him.
Yes, it's easy to make the comparison between Hutch and this fella but I'm not sure that is the right comparison. I see this signing as dealing with the Burns issue and I suspect more signings will follow.
Can't say I know much about McAteer, £12m (give or take) seems very high for a player seen as back up by one of our rivals and the Leicester fans opinion on their forum seems to suggest he's workmanlike at best. That said, the positivity here gives me some hope for this, I trust McKenna knows the sort of player he wants and how to get a song out of them.
Really hope this is in addition to the Norwegian lad in which case it could be solid business.

The player is fine, if not enormously exciting. Feels overpriced but then I thought £7.5m for Broadhead was a good deal and then we got £10m for him so that's the market at the moment.
Very much a Burns replacement/upgrade here.
Still much work to do and that's a bigger issue.
That's the reality Steve - they turned down a loan with a view to £10m for him in Jan if memory serves.
And the market is what it is.
Ade Akinbiyi couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo...
With Leicester said to have bid for Ivanovic yesterday - if they sign him we will have massivly improved a promotion rival by getting rid of a squad player and giving them £12 million to pay most of the fee for a forward that many people on here wanted us to sign.
I know which of the 2 players I'd be very happy to sign and which one I am bemused by, for that fee.
Yes, Kieran may turn him into Ronaldo but currently it seems as likely as it is for the Leicester fans to be right about him.

£12m seems a ridiculous amount. I wish w'd gone out and paid slightly more for the Norwegian lad. Will have to see what happens, and hopefully he'll shove these words down my throat, but reeks of desperation at this point.
I have to agree with you on this one. For a player with very little in the way of assists/goal output and signed for pure work rate, to drop eight figures on him is an absolute travesty.
If we've ditched Egeli (a guy who'll get bums off seats) for McAteer I do fear for us this season. We're going to become very workmanlike to watch.

No point catastrophising until the window is shut. Feels very obvious to me we are going to be after another 10/wide player of a different profile. It's a very heavy fee for McAteer but he obviously has attributes McKenna likes and I value his judgement more than yours or mine.

I'm not catastrophising. It just feels like an enormous weight of money for a system player rather than a genuine game-changer/flair player.
If Phil can reassure us that we're still in for Egeli also, I'll feel more sanguine about this one.

How do we know that Walle Egeli isn't coming as well? McAteer as the ready-to-go player with experience, Walle Egeli as the promising Youth (who doesn't count for squad numbers).

Bigger fee than I thought it would be, but really like the signing and improves us instantly on that right hand side with Ogbene feeling his way back and Burns out with an ACL. Gives us exactly what we need in that role.
We still need another versatile option up there, but really like the fit of this one
And reflective of Ashton and McKenna always saying they have 3 or 4 options to replace any position.
I agree with Joe, I don't see the reason for bed-wetting here.
We were never going to replace 2025 Omari with an identical player, as he's a PL level player now. We are effectively going to have to redevelop our own, but we are starting from a stronger foundation this time across the whole squad.

I like him, good fit and ready to play.
Potentially better than Broadhead already, with higher potential
Personally I think we're only really looking for another DM and the squad looks good. A couple of high potential prospects would be nice as future planning.
We are literally screaming out for another number 9, if not two.

Do we have the money to spend over £30m on ten's when we're still lacking in central midfield and striker options? Plus potentially having to bring in a Woolfenden replacement. Obviously Woolfenden himself will bring in something though don't know what our asking price is for him.

Absolutely shouldn't be bed wetting. If this was £4-6 mil it's just good business. So from a squad improvement point of view it's ok.
My overriding feeling is I'd just much rather have say Sarmiento coming back on board. Rate him higher, think he would have been cheaper and just psychologically the boost would have been bigger. The roar with him coming back on off the bench.....
£12 feels like probably what we thought we could get a Tom Fellows for. Probably a few mil short now the way the market is going.
For me if we sign another Wide player this is fine. Burns is into his 30s so this feels a longer term replacement. If this is it then I worry we don't carry the threat on the right.

No doubt about that. I think Akpom's versatility means it'll likely be 1, but 1 in the profile of Hirst who can yin yang with him and share the load. AAH is done here, I'm certain there will be an addition in that area but no idea who that'll be.

So you're willing to spend around £17M on a 19 year old full international with no experience of English football but have concerns that £11.5M for a 23 year old full international with experience of English football is overpaying.
This is despite the 23yo having played a role in exactly what we are trying to achieve this season, as in a Championship winning side facing the pressure of promotion.
I really fail to understand what parts of our fan base expect this season and what would make them happy.

If we are willing to pull the trigger on a £12m deal for McAteer then we are obviously confident we have the funds. Ashton/McKenna aren't going to suddenly say "oh fcuk, we have no money left for a central midfielder!"
