If it was truly about nothing other than national pride, surely those behind it (Führage, Tommy Ten Names et al.) would be speaking out against incidents like these:

You ain't a beauty but, hey, you're alright.

Compèred to which countries? If you choose to judge the past by the standards of today, you won’t find anywhere with much to crow about - especially if you compare nations that have existed as long or longer than England - Alfred, Edward and Athelstan’s time.

Edit: I’ve noticed flags and stuff but have no idea what this campaign or whatever you call it is. Pardon my ignorance. I’ve been avoiding the news having enough difficult stuff to deal with without that. What I do perceive is that there are a lot of people who are afraid and the likes of the Reform boneheads will feast on that.

I never mentioned anything about comparing. You can form an opinion about something without comparing it against something else.

I believe context is important, Swailsey. Anyone can form an opinion. We still just about have freedom of speech on some things.

Sure. So ignoring our horrendous long-term past (if we must), the football hooliganism of the 80s was awful, the inherent racism that is still prevalent within our country, and the fact that we have been right-wing for the majority of recent memory is something that I am personally ashamed of. Others can have different opinions.

Why be personally ashamed? Like say us electing someone you dont like or having laws you dislike? Be embarrassed but ashamed?

Surely you should only be ashamed of something you yourself have done?

For full context that was done in honour of the Englands women’s football team after they won the Euros. Think a function was held in their honour - but different to someone hanging a flag on a lamppost or painting a roundabout.

I don’t think you’ve said anything that unreasonable. Can’t say I’m ashamed of this country but there are aspects of it I find rather unsettling. Not that I speak for any side in particular.

By christ I’m not. I’ve been ashamed to be English for about 20 years now. We have shown ourselves to be a repugnant nation for the most part of our history.
[Post edited 31 Aug 21:17]

I am actually equally proud and ashamed.

I have flown the English flag before (during World Cup/Euros etc). I would be reluctant to fly it at other times because of the way it has been hijacked by racist xenophobic groups.

I am proud of some our top sportspeople and sporting achievements including 1966 and Sir Bobby and all. I am proud of our history in technological and scientific and human rights developments including setting up things like the European Court of Human Rights.

I am ashamed of much of our historical behaviour but also recognise some of that was a product of different times and outlooks. I am aware enough that I am sure I would not always have stood on the correct side had I lived through those times. I am ashamed of some of our politicians and media.

I also find a good summary in the phrase I used to hear "I have no problem with the immigrants, I just wish we could send certain selected English people in the opposite direction!"

Not p*ssing me off mate, just saying you're not responsible for the actions of others. No need to feel responsible, put it on yourself.

I can't see that mate, though maybe there has been some misunderstanding with the posts. I don't know, I haven't followed too closely.
We all know written text can be miscontrued without the spoken context.
By all means have a break and come back refreshed though.

I doubt you ever will.

A few just like to lurk and vote and choose to contribute very little.

Though to be fair, I have to admire their tenacity. The furious downvoting must be at risk of causing some serious RSI.

That's true grit right there.
