For me:
- I’d be going back in for Hackney. Offer him whatever he wants. Offer Boro 30m if we need to. It’ll cost us far more not going up.
- I’d be getting on the phone to Morsy sharpish while recalling Conor Chaplin. The lack of link between the midfield and striker is a huge issue. The pair of them would help with that. Get the old band back together.
- I’d be looking far and wide for a striker who is a natural finisher. Someone who just knows where to be at the right time. McAteer put one in across the six yards box first half today and not a single one of our lads even thought about running into that space let alone actually doing it. I’m not sure who specifically but there has to be someone. What about the ex-Boro striker who went to the MLS. He’d do the job. A natural finisher is what we need.

Szmodics isn’t suited to the role we ask of our number 10, nobody suits it better than Conor Chaplin.
Szmodics is at his most dangerous as a false 9, or inside left forward - the role he’s been at his best either at Peterborough or Blackburn.

Simple may well be the word. It must take some very entrenched eyes to find 95% of Philogene's and Clarke's work awful, yet Szmodics just needs a fresh portion of grass.
Jack Clarke is in the 96th percentile for goals scored among AMs and wingers. He's in the 95th percentile for expected assists. He's in the 88th percentile for key passes, 88th for carries, 89th for successful take-ons, 87th for crosses into the penalty area, 96th for goals per shot, 99th for penalties won. Show pony stuff or the precise opposite?
You want to bin off one of the most productive players in his category in the league, perhaps the most productive, and you want to replace him with one of the least. Sammie at his Peterborough best wouldn't touch the sides for us of course. We'd need him to replicate his single stunning season, in which he created very little for others but scored a bucket load. In fact he scored so many that his goals per 90' record was almost as good as Clarke's record is for us this season. Alternative idea: find players who may come close to Clarke's productivity in other areas of the pitch. | | | |

Central midfield it the absolute priority.
Hackney, Louza would be ideal. I would still take Downes but hard to do and not exactly the type we need but he would still be excellent and can take the ball in difficult spots and get the ball ticking over better. Energy and defensively sound.
I think we would have to consider a really bould decision on McAteer and let him go on loan and play week in week out. If there was someone available with real pace we should consider it (who could play off left or right).
Striker seems obvious but unless we fix some of the issues in creating chances that won't suddenly change everything.
Sargeant if doable would be good but no chance they sell another. The lad at Millwall has struggled for goals so if the price is better he would be good fit for system (but as said he won't suddenly score with the service as is). | |

Hackney won't happen especially as they will probably be above us, he won't risk coming here for 5 months with no guarantee of promotion.
The getting band back together won't be a magic fix either, also your almost sacking yourself with the money you have spent doing that.

I think the player ratings on here from last night tell us plenty about what's required. The summer transfer window was a disaster. The 3 worst rated starters were Azon, Akpom and McAteer. No shots on target 1st half, striker and No.10 recruitment has failed badly and needs to be addressed. Hopefully a returning Wes Burns and an improving Egeli will see McAteer dropped from the squad.

i don't think that version of chaplin exists anymore, he's 2nd string for lowly portsmouth, would love him back for dressing room morale (maybe a role as full-time mascot?!) and maybe working towards coaching.

Szmodics may have struggled the most of all our attacking players this season.
Zero goals. 10 games, 15 shots, xG 1.8. In his three prior Championship campaigns he's scored 5 goals, 6 goals, and 27 goals. 11 games, zero goals for Ireland. His pinch-yourself Blackburn season feels increasingly fleeting sadly.
Zero assists. Cross accuracy 6.7%, xA 0.32, chances created per 90' 0.81. He's struggled more than any attacking player to contribute to others' shooting opportunities, Akpom and McAteer included.
Binning off Clarke and Philogene to make way for Szmodics on the left looks to me to be the wrong kind of simple. |

Because it better enables people to assess how well a player or team is taking their chances? It's a far cry from when people could readily make up who was clinical and who wasn't based on whether they agreed with the signing in the first place, or on whether the player's face fitted, sure. | | | |

Please no, he was pretty average and his first touch was poor even compared to Hirst now. I don’t think he would improve us at all. He’ll score goals at Wrexham because after watching them play against us they mostly lump it long.

Honestly I’ve never thought he was that good anyway. Never looked comfortable with the ball at his feet, finishing isn’t great. Just worked in the system quite well. Kieffer Moore is 5x the player Hirst is. |
Moore is awful... although done a job for us in 2024 when we needed him to.
Poor in the air, can't jump, can't pass or shoot and his second touch is a tackle.
When Hirst was fit again towards the end of the Champ promotion season, our play was much better for it.
Was almost the same as the difference a fit McGoldrick made to MMc's teams. |  |

I’m definitely attempting to replace Clarke and Philogene, look awful most the time, with odd flashes of quality - terrible fits for us. Egeli improving, looks like he’s going to be a real asset long, still in adjustment phase, as did Omari.
3 of that 4 were core members of 23/24, do you recall how good they were?
Szmodics the most natural replacement for Broady, inside left forward, not a touchline winger show pony. Also noticeable the serious hinderance to Leifs output this season when Clarke and Philogene there.
Don’t worry about replacing them if we get to the PL, let’s worry about the here and now first and foremost. [Post edited 3 Dec 0:38]

Produced some flashes of brilliance, largely overrun by underwhelming overall performances and largely look like poor fits for our style/system. Near £40m for the pair, you’d want them to absolutely dominate this league as some suggested they would back in the summer.
