| Had a feeling 08:33 - Jan 2 with 1537 views | muccletonjoe | The top two for most of the season were not nailed on to finish there, the fact that our form has coincided with their wobble has now given us an excellent opportunity of making squad depth really tell and take advantage of some considerable drop in form from Coventry City, exasperated by injury / illness. 3 points at Portsmouth on Sunday will certainly increase their anxiety. | | | | |
| Had a feeling on 08:40 - Jan 2 with 1425 views | JakeITFC | It was definitely a good week to have a good week - the speed of back to back fixtures means that we’ve managed to catch up points gaps that might have taken a few weeks or a month to do earlier or later in the season. The great thing is that we have seemingly been able to do that without it coming at great expense to us in terms of gut-busting performance or causing longer term fitness/injury worries. January for us is big in terms of a relatively kind fixture list and in theory having the resources to add a couple of better players than the chasing pack. A good month ahead and things could look very positive going into the remainder of the season. | | | |

I don't think we can take anything from looking at fixtures, I looked at them before xmas and glad I was wrong. I really didn't expect Boro to drop off so much. It's great to be where we are at but still a helluva long way to go and not many points still between 2nd and 8th so things can change very quickly. We can only hope Coventry go on to do a Boro and really open things up. Another huge game awaits, again one on paper that should be a routine win but we know it won't be that easy.

It's interesting that now we're in second you've pivoted to there being a long way to go, whereas a couple of weeks ago you (and some of your other relentlessly negative compadres) weren't saying there's still a long way to go, you were writing the season off basically: Not a chance of top 2 by Blue_Heath 14 Dec 2025 18:47The longer this season goes on the more I agree with this even though I'm hoping KM sorts it out, there is little evidence to suggest though that this will change.

I expect Coventry to return to form when Thomas Asante is fit again, their drop off has coincided with his absence, or so it seems, they need a back up for him so they do not have to play him every game. Also it highlights that coach's need to find a way to stop him dictating play, then Coventry can be beaten. Not our problem now we have our 6 points from them this season.

If we are being brutally honest has KM changed much? I think our position is more to do with Middlesboro's poor form and a drop off from Coventry. That said credit where it is due, the table doesn't lie but how will we cope with the pressure of being second now?

You're right, he's changed nothing at all; it's all down to others, especially Coventry, lucky our team listened to Frank Lampard when they effectively outplayed and put on a tactical masterclass to inflict their first defeat at home. And it's a shame that we don't have a manager who has experience of being in second and getting promoted twice, maybe we should change him for one of them. Be brutally honest.... any suggestions?

Don't you ever get tired of putting the most over the top negative spin possible on absolutely everything to do with Town? What do you get from it? It's very weird.

Indeed. The whole "there's lots of football to be played" line was even truer a couple of weeks ago than it is now, yet it's only being used now we're in second, where previously certain posters were telling us nearly half a season gone was enough to say we had no chance of making the top 2.

Why do we need to be brutally honest. A majority understood McKenna's strategy was to benefit from fresher bodies/less injuries etc in these such congested fixture blocks and the more general thick and fast nature of the champ over the course of the season. This isn't a case of us being lucky with Boro/Cov and others 'dropping points'. There was always more chance of them not being able to maintain the same side/having fatigue affect them. It doesn't mean we haven't had disappointing results and could be sat on more points. Losing to Oxford etc previously wasn't part of the plan. But it's just football and McKenna's job is to get us up over the 46 games not the first 10-15. I agree still a long way to go though.

Middlesboro's poor form and a drop off from Coventry hasn’t seen Leicester or Southampton surge into the automatic promotion places. We are in a position of our own making.

The thread of shame is right here, some right numpties adding their shameful pearls of wisdom in broad daylight Not a chance of top 2 by IP1Blue 13 Dec 2025 16:22We’re not consistent enough.
Our general play has been so far below par all season.
Jack Taylor was our 4th choice and 5th choice in midfield in last 2 seasons and now is starting games, fair enough he was good in a couple but the last couple of games shows why he was 4th and 5th choice.
Hirst and Azon are not good enough and that’s now a fact after 20 games.
Away from home we look a different team.
And if we go behind, it almost feels as if we’ve got no chance of winning a game. A complete opposite to our previous promotion team. If the going gets tough. We crumble which is a massive concern.
Play offs is the maximum we can get.

they were unlikely to keep the goal scoring rate up at what it was, the games were always going to get tighter through a combination of tactics being changed against them and a bit of tiredness and injuries. They will still go up, but i would be surprised if they got to 100 points.

That thread has not aged well, less than three weeks ago it was playoffs if we are lucky, Town are now sitting in second place. [Post edited 2 Jan 10:21]

In fairness that statement is largely correct in terms of form. Through December and yesterday, we’ve picked up 17 points from 24. It’s largely the same ppg we’ve returned since September. It’s a good return but it’s not like we’ve really blown the league away. For context, Swansea have picked up a better PPG over that same period. Whereas Middlesbrough have 10 points from 21 and Cov 9 points from 21. So we haven’t changed all that much, other teams are just struggling to keep up their early season momentum. I think overall KM and the club will be quite happy with our position though given the start we had. Few additions in Jan and I can see us going on a League One style run again.

That's over 2 ppg for us since the start of December, so it is a slight uptick from us given that we're just below 2 ppg since September (and that include the 8 games here where we've been above that marker). Boro and Cov are having the kind of dip we experienced early in the season and that was always likely to happen. Question will be whether they are good enough to get back to that magic 2 ppg level and whether we can sustain or improve on our current form.

I had a discussion on here a few weeks ago where I stated that it was certain that both boro and Coventry would have a wobble, as it is the nature of this league, the question was whether we could take advantage. So far, so good! We need to maintain it now though, that's the tougher part, and im sure we'll have some further wobbles ourselves.

Boro are unlucky for creating chances and not putting them away. Ipswich are a basket case with poor management for not buying a striker capable of putting all of our chances away. The TWTD way...

And any hope of catching them 13 points behind is pretty remote. But 16, is totally out of our range. Which will leave us looking at second place with Middlesborough, very much in the hands of our recruitment team, shouldn't leave anyone with a great deal of confidence tbh.

Game by game the Championship is typically unpredictable, some of our fans would do well to remember that when we don't win every week. We'll lose some more games this season, it'll happen. People need to keep their heads and take a bit of a longer term view of things. Cov and Boro have stuttered a bit recently, there will be other periods in the season where they go a couple of games without a win too, I'm pretty sure of that. I'm also pretty sure they'll tick along at a decent pace though and accrue a further 30 - 40 points this season. We're well capable of outpacing them both, we've got a big squad, we're finding our groove a bit, we have some muscle memory in the club that neither of those do for this run in and the next 10 games look like they could be fruitful. If we're not still in the top 2 by the end of February I'll eat my hat.

Agree. Whilst we should be positive after the week we’ve had we still need to live by the mantras ‘one game at a time’ and ‘take nothing for granted’.

I've seen some negative b0ll0x on here in recent weeks, but this is up there with the best. Maybe time for some to recognise that we're actually playing pretty well (if not as flamboyant as some would like), and the stats have been showing this for some time. We've been at the wrong end of the statistical distribution curve for much of the season, but that is now beginning to balance out, and the results starting to match the expected outcomes. Maybe, just maybe, our Field of Dreams has built that solid foundation, and the results are now coming as they should have.
