Signings who surprised you....? on 21:27 - Jan 15 by StNeotsBlue
Alan Lee.
This.
I’ve always tried to give new signings the benefit of the doubt, but he couldn’t get in the Cardiff side before he joined us (and Cardiff were a weaker side than us at the time) so I was not expecting nearly the player he turned out to be

Ian Marshall. The Oldham fans were thanking us for signing him. He turned out be half an M&M...
I'll add Mathie to that, a Newcastle reserve in effect that I knew nothing about and went on to get 19 goals? one season.
I'll also add Morsy, I never expected what we got with him though I thought he'd be a decent enforcer and probably be a bit good for L1.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
Mauricio Taricco because I thought we’d just signed him to keep Adrian Paz company but whilst Paz failed to live up to expectations Taricco is one of my favourite Town players.

Kiefer Moore, not for us but in general. in his 1st stint I didn't think he was a player that was going to play in the PL. Wrong.
I was genuinely surprised so many people wrote him off after about 100 minutes of football spread across 11 games. I was even more surprised that we sold him after keeping a close eye on him during his loan at Rotherham. What a bizarre signing if you're never going to give the guy a chance.
In terms of the initial question, Sam Morsy surprised me actually, I thought we were getting a good League 1 shïthouse who would add some steel to the spine. He obviously ended up far better than that and far better on the ball than I expected. As per the OP I also thought Burgess was a head it and kick it clogger to help us deal with long balls, but again he was far better than that.

I think he has to be the top answer. Very much how it was. Signed as an interpreter and only able to due to joint Italian nationality and therefore EU membership, I think.

I've said it on here before, but I remember watching his debut, wasn't it 0-3 against Bolton?
Honestly never thought I'd see him in a Town shirt again, he really did look like a competition winner that night.

There’s some good shouts on here from Taricco to Mark Venus, but my selection that immediately sprung to mind was:
Shefki Kuqi
‘What a donkey’, ‘waste of space journeyman’ thought I. Wrong.
He rumbled onto the pitch dumper truck style. Chased everything like dog in the park and devastated all before him. You never knew whether he’d hit the ball into the net, stand or Staples, but he scored 30 in 80 appearances.
A barnstorming player to whom the tap in was something that happened to other people. He and Darren Bent terrorised the opposition and then there was ‘that’ celebration. Worth the entrance money alone.
I was sad when he left but he provided a heck of a lot of fun for us for a couple of seasons and fear for the opposition. Yep, he surprised the heck out of me.
Edit: anyone who missed seeing him play will get the drift from this

I would go for Shefki as well. You don't really have high hopes, when you are in the championship, and are signing a striker from league one on loan. But he is one of my favourite ever Town players.
