I love smaller indie type gigs and always seek them out but I don’t think I’ve seen by that have propelled to selling out stadium type levels. I know Ed played a lot of free shows before he was a name. Anyone see him in Camden or anything? Pretty sure Blur played some free stuff at Clacton Pier.
A mate of mine flew to London to watch Oasis last year after watching them play in front of 100 people in a small venue in Cleveland in the mid 90s which I thought was awesome.
I don’t have any super cool stories like that really. Although In terms of festivals and thinking about the most famous star on the planet these days, I do remember Taylor Swift (still a teenager at the time I think) at V festival in around 2009. She was a a country gal back then and on really early in the day, no one was really paying loads of attention. Quite funny to think now she moves nations economies with her tours.

He did indeed. From memory The Cure played a longer set than Souixsie too.
My wife used to see The Iveys ,who regularly did a gig at South Ken, she saw them one week as The Iveys, the next week as Badfinger, possibly their first gig,
Ed sheeran supported my band at the Banham barrel circa 2008. Rocked up in his dad's car and used an old tape cassette boom box for his loops. I can remember thinking how odd it was.
Saw the killers at UEA in 2005 before they went absolutely stratospheric. Caught a few in there before they went on to do stadiums.

I wonder how many of the older generation swa McCartney when he was putting Wings together in 72 and got on a bus and turned up at Uni halls offering to play for 50p a ticket? That would have been cool. Think hey played mostly Rock n Roll covers and a few new sings but absolutely no Beatles.
I think I was oblivious to Wings being put together in 1972 and certainly didn't see a chance of them playing in, or close to, Ipswich. But I have remembered seeing a prog band either at Weeley in August 1971 or Bardney in May 1972 who were way down the bill, a mid afternoon slot. Nevertheless when they played the Pier Pavilion in Felixstowe I went along and again two or three hundred of us sat in a semi circle a little way back from the stage, this obviously pissed off Peter Gabriel so he jumped down and prowled along the front of us occasionally with a prod of the mike stand (good job it wasn't a pointed stick, he could have had someone's eye out with that thing) and more or less growling instead of singing. Saw Genesis again that autumn to a pretty full Ipswich Civic College main hall and supported by Caravan plus A Band Called O. I think it was next spring I was at a sold out Gaumont to see them before a final time (for me) at the 1973 Melody Maker poll winners day at the Oval.

Spent nearly every saturday evening at the Pier Pavillion 1971 - 72 - just checked and the following bands came up and I had completely forgotten about the first MC5, Kingdom Come, Slade, Mott the Hoople (just before Bowie and all the young dudes), Genesis, Uriah Heap, Van Der Graaf Generator, Humble Pie, Uriah Heep, Hawkwind and Nazareth.

Michael Gove. I went to the filming of some late night channel 4 show, which was presenting while still a journalist. Think it had other future 'stars' involved too, but can't remember the name, cos I'm old and it was literally decades ago.
Sorry, know thisbt quite in keeping with rhe thread but sod it.

Here is the show remembered "fondly" by one of Gove's co-stars:
Regularly saw Sam fender playing pubs up in the north east when I studied up there. Flashforward to now and he is selling out 100k at London Stadium. Crazy.

I was a callow youth of 15 when I went to my first gig, Uriah Heap, at the Pier Pavilion in the spring of 1971 (and had to leave before the end to catch the last bus back to Ipswich). Never knew that MC5, Slade, Mott the Hoople, Van Der Graff, Humble Pie, Hawkwind and Nazareth had preceded them there, although I did catch all those acts except MC5 over the next few years.
I can remember seeing The Mick Abrahams Band and Glen Cornick's Wild Turkey there but have never seen Jethro Tull - despite now living on the same island as Ian Anderon, who I have never seen in the Co-op either, unlike Donnie Munro out of Runrig.
And your list has reminded me that a year or two later I saw Supertramp at the Pier, this was around the time of the 'Indelibly Stamped' album, performing to a few hundred and a couple of years before they went stratospheric. I think it was 1975 that I saw them at the Gaumont and was standing at the back due to all the seats being sold.

I saw Feeder (briefly pretty big in the late 90s/early 00s) play in the Drum and Monkey in Ipswich when they had their first EP out.
I saw Muse as the support band for Feeder at the Ipswich corn exchange in the late 90s.
Saw the 1975 on the tiny new bands stage at latitude. I thought they were fooking awful. Still think that.
I reckon I saw Feeder on the same tour at Sailors nightclub in Newquay. They were all wearing orange boilersuits. Great gig and that first ep was cracking.
Saw Queens of the Stone Age at the Fleece in Bristol in 1999, maybe 100 people there. Josh Homme hit on my girlfriend afterwards.

Travis were the undercards to Embrace and Longpigs at the Corn Exchange circa '96. They certainly went on to be bigger than the two of them.
It was hardly the Pistols at the Lesser Free trade hall but there wasn't many people there.
I can recall seeing Pulp pre Razzmatazz, Common People etc at the Leadmill.
I was there, remember flicking dogends at Embrace because they were so awful (I was about 13 and regret my behaviour), of our group of mates we all thought there were awful except one of us who bought their single and then flogged it for £200 when they became famous. Travis on the other hand were brilliant, much better than the Longpigs who i thinked had already started to fall out with each other.

Saw Ed a lot in pubs in my teenage years - a mate of mine was also in the local music scene and quite often crossed paths with Ed when watching my mate. Had a great conversation with him about his orange Adidas Star Wars Collab trainers. Genuinely nice guy.
Not that any of these have gone on to stadium level but have ended up playing some pretty big venues ...
The Charlatans - Boston Arms, Tufnell Park (about the time they released their first single) LCD Soundsystem - around 2003 at Kings Cross Freight Depot (was about 3am!) Chvrches - first on in tiny tent at Field Day festival 2013

I was DJing at a few of the venues in kings Cross goods yard around 2003 to 2006. I definitely didn't go on to be a household name though!
I was born underwater, I dried out in the sun.
I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

Was Indian rope the first single? I have that on 7 inch somewhere.

I saw Shakin' Stevens and the Sunsets in a Birmingham pub in the mid 70s. I know, he's not the calibre we're looking for, and I can't even remember the name of the pub, but it's the taking part that counts, eh? I also saw Maddy Prior perform in the little folk club behind The Waveney Pub in Oulton Broad around the same time, but no-one even knows who she is now, let alone what band she was in later.
Shakin' Stevens (& the Sunsets) played a minor college gig when I was a student in 1977, but I didn't attend. I also failed to see Squeeze twice in their early days when they were supporting bands that I liked & I preferred the pub or bar to listening to the support band.

I saw Feeder 1998 at the waterfront they were just breaking through but not big.
Everclear were support, they were probably a bit bigger in the states though never mainstream. Equally good band.
Muse were supposed to support Skunk Anansie at a secret warm up gig at the same venue but for whatever reason did t which was a shame. Skunk came out to a cold room and absolutely tore the place up, have tickets to see them in June on a double header with Garbage.
One to look out for who are slowly getting traction though agsin I think will be bigger in the states, Robert Jon and the Wreck, incredible band I have been following for a while, saw them in Northampton last year, superb. If you like 70s rock, Eagles, Hendrix Led Zep, Tom Petty etc then check tjem out. Their guitar player is something else. Took the current Mrs BandT and after we left she said they were so good she actually cried.
Plan B, they day the Strickland Banks album came out in Oxford. Tbh that was probably his peak, everything subsequent has been disappointing but thag album blew up and he was excellent.
