| Chuba Signs ! on 16:17 - May 5 with 1359 views | HighgateBlue | With all due respect to Chuba, most fans would have preferred it if it were a straight loan, and we could give him straight back. On paper, this was a big signing for the Championship - arriving from Ajax, huge wages, chunky fee if we sign him permanently, doubtless a substantial loan fee first, and he was of course a previous top scorer in the Champ. In reality, it's hard to see how he could have been more of a disappointment. Whether that's his fault, or just the fit within the playing structure, I've no idea. Either way, he's not been seen on the pitch in a league game before the hour mark since New Year's Day. Assuming the criteria were satisfied for us to be obliged to keep him, it was sensible to announce it early, as (a) it sort of buries the 'bad news' with the fans at a time when we're all delighted, and (b) it means that if we are planning to offload him, there is plenty of time to pass and other signings to be made, that will make it seem less embarrassing when we do ship him off. If he's still seen as a 10, then we have Nunez, Mehmeti and him already. I can't believe that we'd start a Prem season with those as our three number 10s, and if we sign someone, how likely is it that 4 or even 5 make the league squad? Is the slate wiped clean for a new start for Chuba, or is this just the obligatory admin ahead of us cutting our losses? | | | |

Pretty sure we won't be able to sell him until January. I don't think you can sign someone and then sell them on, in the same window.

You can do a back-to-back transfer. It's been done in recent seasons where teams have utilised purchase rights, and immediately sold the player on for a profit. The issue generally arises when you end up in a situation with a player having played for multiple clubs, if I understand it correctly.

| Chuba Signs ! on 16:29 - May 5 with 1278 views | Radlett_blue | Chubby Pom-Pom's agent must have played a blinder. Setting the Brummies & us to bid for him must be how he squeezed a guaranteed THREE YEAR deal out of us. No wonder Chubby wanted to come here, also with a realistic chance of promotion & the clause being triggered. I can't see us selling him given his contract so we will look for a year long loan somewhere. | |

I doubt we will be able to shift Akpom at a profit!

Chubby Pom-Pom?? Fair enough it's not quite worked out for Chuba here, but I don't think he was anywhere near as bad as some people are making out, and certainly doesn't deserve grown adults making up little nicknames for him Let's be honest, we all knew what the deal was when we signed him and i don't think too many people were particularly upset about it at the time. A £7m outlay doesn't even make him one of our top 10 most expensive signings, so let's just see what the summer brings for him and either get behind him for the new season if he's still here, or wish him well if he moves on

Translated as: By the way, it is insane that Sven #Mislintat offered #Akpom (in his third year of contract) a salary of 5 million euros. Birmingham City is footing 60%. The Supervisory Board of #Ajax stood by and watched.
| Chuba Signs ! on 16:54 - May 5 with 1124 views | tetchris | Ashton shat his pants on this deal just like he did on many of the deals he negotiated the last time we were in the PL! Birmingham were interested and offered to sign him permanently for £6.5m but Chuba thought we were a better option and signed on loan for us with a view to a permanent deal if we got promoted, which has turned out to be a brilliant deal for him and a crap deal for us. | | | |

Not having that... all 3 deals I thought were very sensibly structured in that we weren't on the hook for big money if we failed, but we got players we otherwise could not have afforded at the time. None of them pulled up trees, but gave us a quality depth to the squad. £15m for the 3 players is a pittance with PL money. And we may not even have to sign one of them... so it's cost us £9m.

I think Akpom always was a sh1t deal whatever way you look at it. I'm not so fussed about the other two. I just hope Ashton doesnt repeat his attempt to buy Broja for £30m!!

It's what they reported at the time of the loan too. https://english.ajax.nl/articl However, the club site makes it sound like it was triggered after a certain number of appearances. "with a permanent move subsequently triggered during the course of the 2025/26 season" Maybe it was an option until a set number of games when it became an obligation. Either way, its not 'Nonsense' to say what Ajax are saying themselves is it?

I agree with that. £2.2m for Kipre is peanuts, Cajuste it looks like we'll wriggle out of, Neil and Azon were useful straight loans, no doubt with a nice fee and promotion bonus attached. It's only really Akpom that looks regrettable in hindsight, but making it conditional upon promotion was sensible. There's no way we could've committed to a 3 year deal in the event we didn't go up. As it is we're guaranteed to have some level of premier league money for the duration of his contract.

Or we spend all summer tuning him into our third choice striker?

| Chuba Signs ! on 16:15 - May 5 by Steve_M | True and I liked AAH in that run in, never looked as lively after his surgery and was neither fit nor strong enough for the PL. Nor since then has he looked the same player he was when we first signed him. I think Akpom might be strong enough if not good enough. If either is in the squad in September it will have gone wrong a bit. |
As our 11th hour bid for Broga falls though on deadline day McKenna tells the EADT that Chuba has been showing great attributes in training and we are happy with what we have.

I would be absolutely flabbergasted if we voluntarily took up an option to purchase. Anything that is triggered is an obligation. Maybe its poor translation on their part.

We were desperate to sign Akpom when other options had fallen through & we thought we were getting 2022-23 Akpom, who scored 28 goals for Boro.

Poor planning leads to desperation, leads to a sh1t deal. No sensible person thought we were getting 2022/23 Akpom.

I really don’t think having to sign Akpom is that big of a deal At the time of signing him there were basically 4 outcomes: - he was brilliant and helps fire us to promotion - he flops but we get promotion anyway - he was brilliant but we fail to get promotion - he flops and we fail to get promotion The last 2 are by far the worst outcomes as it means we aren’t where we want to be, and whilst clearly the first would have been preferable having to use a small chunk of what is now a much bigger budget (on which we may well be able to recoup a portion) is hardly a bad place to be On a wider note I think fans need to adjust their thinking on these types of deals as there seems to be huge trepidation at an obligation being triggered for a player who has underwhelmed - despite the fact that many ‘normal’ permanent transfers don’t work out
