What the hell he gonna do next year..

Part of our squad thar got us promoted.

Didn't work out as well as he would have wanted but that happens all the times in a first season at a club without a pre-season etc.

If the obligation wasn't there would we have done this deal. No probably not. But fee wise it's not crazy. Salary is more of an issue potentially. But I wouldn't be that surprised if he did ok.

Watch him be a great squad option next season and contribute. Funny old game.

I agree with that. £2.2m for Kipre is peanuts, Cajuste it looks like we'll wriggle out of, Neil and Azon were useful straight loans, no doubt with a nice fee and promotion bonus attached.

It's only really Akpom that looks regrettable in hindsight, but making it conditional upon promotion was sensible. There's no way we could've committed to a 3 year deal in the event we didn't go up. As it is we're guaranteed to have some level of premier league money for the duration of his contract.

Exactly.

We won't recoup the £7m if we sold, but not every signing has to be with resale value in mind. So it's hardly a disaster, just didn't have the impact we hoped.

We now have to decide - do we see him as a PL squad player? If not (and I don't), I guess given his wages we'll offload a chunk of that with a champ loan.

Poor planning leads to desperation, leads to a sh1t deal.

No sensible person thought we were getting 2022/23 Akpom.

It is in no way disastrous FFS.

A good signing at a slightly inflated price. It even that you can argue. You can't get many players of his pedigree for that sort of money. He's a good player who it didn't go as well as he would have like in a new team. He could easily still come good with a good pre-season behind him.

Maybe not disastrous, but certainly expensive. Adding a loan fee of say £3m and wages of 2.5m a year for four yearsand that’s 20 million in total.

We got away with him and Cajuste not hitting their strides this season as we had a strong squad for the division and were fortunate with injuries.

We need similar transfers this summer to come off.

Chuba Signs ! on 17:34 - May 5 by C_HealyIsAPleasure

I really don’t think having to sign Akpom is that big of a deal

At the time of signing him there were basically 4 outcomes:

- he was brilliant and helps fire us to promotion
- he flops but we get promotion anyway
- he was brilliant but we fail to get promotion
- he flops and we fail to get promotion

The last 2 are by far the worst outcomes as it means we aren’t where we want to be, and whilst clearly the first would have been preferable having to use a small chunk of what is now a much bigger budget (on which we may well be able to recoup a portion) is hardly a bad place to be

On a wider note I think fans need to adjust their thinking on these types of deals as there seems to be huge trepidation at an obligation being triggered for a player who has underwhelmed - despite the fact that many ‘normal’ permanent transfers don’t work out

Yeah.

He might also bring some experience & quality next season, stranger things have happened and he wouldn’t be the first player to need a bit of time to adjust. He’s also been played out of position for the most part to be fair to him. Not saying it’s a deal I’d opt into without the obligation or denying he’s had a very underwhelming season though.

And if we don’t fancy him we probably get a 7 figure loan deal for next season from a Brum or Wrexham and ship him out for £3m - £4m next summer.

Ashton shat his pants on this deal just like he did on many of the deals he negotiated the last time we were in the PL! Birmingham were interested and offered to sign him permanently for £6.5m but Chuba thought we were a better option and signed on loan for us with a view to a permanent deal if we got promoted, which has turned out to be a brilliant deal for him and a crap deal for us.

Hindsight is a truly wonderful thing isn't it ?

I don’t remember a chorus of objection when he signed. Please point me to all the ‘disastrous deal’ posts that must have been made by yourself and all the others at the time and I’ll stand corrected.

When he signed I thought he’d be a real asset, the get out being that if we failed we could say goodbye. It’s not worked out that way. So what? The gift of hindsight we all have, the gift of foresight is presumably with all those people who at the time said it was a stupid signing.

I get that every angle must be taken to beat up the CEO and try to divide the club and the fanbase. I know, it’s all part of influencing; taking part, but if you want to truly be part of the pitchfork and torches brigade, it’s probably best to stick to wrong decisions at the time, like Cajuste, not ones that turned out poorly. And it could be argued that even Cajuste was worth the arrangement and Kipre certainly was.

Not every deal works out. Not for anyone. That’s how it is. This one isn’t great. He’s been disappointing, but the overall risk to the club was minimal.

Paid something relatively nominal for a decent squad player. No way did he qualify for the full price.

It all depends on how you define minimal!

£7 million +3 years wages. And probably big wages, which has the added risk of being divisive in the changing room.

By the way, I’m with you. I thought he’d be a great signing and that it was a good deal. And if he scores a few goals next year and helps keep us up he will suddenly be fantastic value again…

This really is dreadful business. 7M and a 3 year deal for a 30YO coming off a career worst season.

Last started on New Years Day so KM clearly does not fancy him but I'm not sure what we are even going to be able to do with him. Do you loan him out or just sell him for whatever you can get?

It’s all ok. £2.6M/yr left on the books with PL income in 26/27 and at least guaranteed parachute payments in 27/28 is in no way dreadful. I agree it’s not worked out, but we could literally burn that money and it not affect our plans for next season one jot. That’s obscene of course when a lot of people are struggling to get by, but that’s another conversation. We’ll move him on fairly easily as he’s still a decent player and even if we only get £1-2M that’s fine.

There is no evidence that Pom-Pom has been a divisive figure. As far as I can guess, he's trained well & done what he could when called upon. Next season, we will have players on far higher wages than him.
If he was a divisive figure, I', sure McKenna would have bombed him out, like Szmodics.

Sorry I wasn’t clear: I wasn’t saying that he was in anyway a disruptive influence. I was just talking about the risk of something like that happening

Sure, if he's still at Town in September on a juicy 3 year contract & hardly playing, he will be either a waste of a squad place and/or potentially a bad influence. I'm sure McKenna will be well aware of that. It probably depends if we can get Delap in or 2 other quality forwards.

Loan to Birmingham? Presumably we could sell him again if an offer came in.

A loan has to be the most realistic and sensible option.

Muric loaned out seems to have worked out well.

Whatever the full reasons it hasn't worked for Akpom here, he is a professional footballer and there is the potential a different environment and set up would work perfectly for him. If he went on loan somewhere and became first choice and banged in goals regularly we could find him being in demand.

Minimal in relation to income. I suspect he will be loaned out if we can bring in better and the true cost will be less.

Is he divisive in the dressing room? Tbh he’s not somebody I know anything about.

Agree re next year. He’s certainly got the strength, build and size. Fingers crossed.

I've posted elsewhere that some players would be more suited to the Premier League, so I'm not averse to that theory, but I saw nothing to suggest that he deserves a place in a Premier League squad.
