His managerial record a bit mixed but he has kept two clubs up. Finally, be honest who had heard of KM 5 years ago? Would like to know your thoughts but let’s get behind him and hope we can put up a better fight of staying up than last time around.

| What are people’s biggest gripe about GON on 10:55 - Jun 20 by DanTheMan | I just don't think he's very good. I'll be fully behind him when he joins, like I have been every manager. I fully hope I'm wrong and he's a roaring success. |
Those are my feelings and position on it too. I was hoping for someone with more of a record of building (and success). GON seems to have had a couple of extended honeymoon periods and then it all goes south quickly, all while playing defensive, attritional football. That’s my first impression, but I’m not wedded to it and am hopefully miles out.

Forgetting that it’s clearly a Wolves, as the manager that kept them after up O’Neill then sh@t the bed at the beginning of last season with a similar record to O’Neill the previous year and got the can. Up Gary O’Neills tricky blues. |
Id love to think the people citing point 1 there, then actually could even remember him playing for them, infact Id love it even more to think that they even went to those derby games back then when he was in their squad against Town ...I really would

I know we're going to be in scrap this year but given our budget, given our supportive owners, given what are willing to pay the right manager I really feel like we could do better and be more ambitious. Honestly (and I'll be so happy to be proved wrong) I think he takes us down.

Maybe we hope he can stabilise us like he did Bournemouth, which would then make us a more attractive proposition to a foreign coach. I wonder how long a contract we'll be giving him.

| What are people’s biggest gripe about GON on 11:20 - Jun 20 by SouthfieldsBlue | The simplest answer is the XG and Xpts, they were the worst in the division that year. Their goal difference was also terrible. Made the point elsewhere but they were saved by a freak 5 wins in 7 in the April, and a few those were very much against the run of play. Was a similar story the season after at Wolves outperformed their XG and XPts considerably, admittedly they were better on those than the 3 relegated sides, but given how poor they were, i dont consider that a huge endorsement for what was a the time an established Premier League side. The season where he didn't outperform the underlying metrics, we all know what happened. I've made the point elsewhere, but it feels like a very lazy appointment that feels poor to okay on first thought, and has felt worse and worse the more I've looked into it. Will back the team all the way, just cannot shake the feeling that it's late June and we've already thrown away our best chance to stay in the Premier League in 20 years. |
Good post, and yes it's the underlying metrics that stopped a couple Champs clubs from taking a recent opportunity to get him in charge. Also alarming is the number of fans who clearly don't understand the statistical metrics. I've seen several reply to you with "Well, we'd be happy with the same points tally!" What the statistical metrics should be telling you all is it's very unlikely to happen again. He either got exceptionally lucky, or had an incredibly good finisher who out-performed xG - which no goalscorer does regularly throughout their career apart from Messi.

But we are one of 3 overwhelming favourites to go down, that's just the reality. And until we've scraped a survival, probably 2, then we won't be an attractive proposition. 'Our budget' is the same, if not smaller, as all the other teams in the league. Supportive owners only go so far, they'd never guarantee not booting out a new manager and even if they supported a 'better' manager upon relegation why would a better manager want to be in the championship? Basically there's not really much we can offer a good enough manager to want to be here. Yet. It's not about ambition it's about reality. And, as I say, that last sentence isn't a pearl clutching shock, more a probable reality. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I disagree Yes were one of 3 favourites to go down but we're well funded, have supportive and ambitious owners and pay managers well. Money and funding talks and that should be an attractive proposition to plenty of managers, most of whom should back themselves if given the right tools which in combination with a good manager we should be able to do. I dont buy that were on a hiding to nothing and should pick a manager in that basis. We are a well run and well funded ambitious club. GON does not, for me allign with that at all. Yes , it will be a hard season, even more reason to be ambitious with our appointment

I hope so. I’m assuming the contract will need to be reasonably lengthy to lure him away from Strasbourg. But it sounds like they haven’t got European football next year, so there probably not as attractive as they were this time last year.

| What are people’s biggest gripe about GON on 14:50 - Jun 20 with 500 views | megnuts | Gary O’Neil is really as underwhelming as it could have got. This is a manager who has never lasted 12 months in a role. That alone should be a massive red flag. We are not talking about someone with a proven body of work, a clear long-term project behind him, or years of evidence that he can build something properly. His reputation seems to lean heavily on being pragmatic, organised and hard to beat, but even that falls apart when you look at Wolves. They became defensively poor under him, which is a problem when defensive organisation is supposed to be one of your main selling points. There is no real consistency either. He had one decent purple patch at Bournemouth, then failed miserably in his second season at Wolves. No wins in ten games is not bad luck. That is a collapse. By the end, he looked like he had completely lost the squad and this was a squad he had helped shape going into that second season. The other thing that bothers me is that both Bournemouth and Wolves improved drastically after he left them. Pereira and Iraola transformed the same squad O’Neil worked with. That tells its own story. If a manager goes and the club immediately looks better, you have to ask what he was actually bringing to the table. Strasbourg was hardly anything special either. Bang average, really. Took over with them in 7th, and finished 8th. And it is not as if Bournemouth or Wolves fans are queuing up to tell us how brilliant he was. Then there is the football itself. It is honking by all accounts. Functional at times, maybe, but nothing exciting. Nothing that makes you think, “Yes, this is the bloke to take us forward.” It feels dull, uninspiring and massively underwhelming. What makes it worse is the idea that after a supposed global search, we have landed on someone Ashton already has a relationship with. That does not scream ambition. It screams convenience. Let’s be honest: Gary O’Neil would have been nowhere near the top of anyone’s list when this process started. Nobody was sat there saying he was the standout candidate. It feels like a grey, backwards step. For me, this is a really poor appointment. No excitement, no clear upside, no big idea behind it. Just another bang-average manager being dressed up as something more than he is. [Post edited 20 Jun 14:53]

When you listen to him talk he just seems to talk in cliches. Almost like Ashton. Does he command authority/respect? He clearly lost control of the dressing room at Wolves. I'm not really sure what his tactics/game model is. Does he have the contacts of an OGS to get the right players through the door? Added to that, he's an ex Budgie. Just too many red flags for me. Really deflating.

I'm not sure there is a manager who would be swayed by funding and will be going anywhere with less funding or backing. As I said, the support thing is overrated too in our position, means nothing because if they do well they'll be fine and if they do badly they'll not want to stay in the championship if they're ambitious. It just doesn't stack up, as much as I want it too. We are still a small fish in a very big pond and as such aren't that attractive. It's marginal though, if we stay up I think we then start to be of interest to bigger and better managers and players. A year of improvement this year, plus 3 more potentially 'weaker' teams in the mix next year and we creep up. That's what I think the plan is with GON.

| What are people’s biggest gripe about GON on 15:48 - Jun 20 with 387 views | TRUE_BLUE123 | I think the way it ended with Wolves is not the lasting memory you want. Seemingly completely lost the dressing room and their discipline was absolutely awful. I think the fact that Bournemouth deemed him surplus to requirements after keeping them up and then going on to push for and get Europe under a new manager. Then doing an ok job at Strasbourg are probably those reasons. But there are also positives. He has premier league experience, he has experience in keeping teams up in relegation battles. His experience abroad (especially in the French league) will be handy in recruitment for us. So I see both sides of it. Am I enthusiastic about the appointment, not really. Am I angry about it, no. Just got to get behind him and see what happens. | |

Yep, after working with McKenna the thought of an inferior coach isn’t going to sit well with the squad. Less preparation, not as good at man management. Him throwing his toys out the pram at wolves is still in recent memory.
| What are people’s biggest gripe about GON on 16:30 - Jun 20 with 315 views | ITFCSG | Easy. Nunez was worshipped because he was a troll signing from the Budgies right under their noses. Plus his post-signing comments and actions towards the Budgies as a whole. If we signed Philippe Clement today and he started to say how $hite his previous employer was, trolled them on matchday, he'd similarly be worshipped here Not GON, who is signing long after leaving Norwich. And who has not publicly turned his back against them. Hence his signing is more Lambert-sque than Nunez. Plus his awful record with a much more talented Wolves team in the PL doesn't exactly fill many with confidence. If he wasn't sacked Wolves would have probably gone down 2 seasons ago with us. Wolves' performance in their 1-2 defeat at Molineux to us was one of the worst I have seen in the PL for a long time. [Post edited 20 Jun 16:35]

Just to add on this. I'm told his training methods are equally questionable. At Wolves they trained just 3 days a week and the players were confused. GON liked to play a lot of golf... Another thing, is he prepared to relocate and immerse himself in the community? He refused to move to Norwich to play for them so I'd hope we've got assurances that he'll move from Bromley to Suffolk?! Who knows. Ugh, it's just *such* an unimaginative appointment. Thats not true, its up to Ashton to sell the project, which shouldn't be difficult. Equally we are a free hit, no risk of reputation damage, you get paid better than a lot of PL managers and you're telling me with all that GON is as good as we can do? Norwich got Clement in the Championship and the best we can do is GON in the PL? No. Something a miss with our 'global' search..... which seems to have extended as far as France.

I don't know what's 'not true'. Anyway, Clement isn't the same as GON in any way. For better or worse. He has zero premier League and relegation battling experience, unless you include them lot. He hasn't done much bar a few good seasons in the Belgian league 5 years ago. Perhaps a more shiny exotic european type but no real substance. Plus it's an easier sell and a better risk, and so good for all sides, potentially bringing a team through and up over a team trying to cling on as a small fish. See McKenna. We clearly don't agree, no drama. I'm not even defending the appointment, just calling it pragmatic and not sure who we could have got in bar a mythical great manager sold on a dream.
