It is.

And we've wasted a decade on this most wretched project by the Labour right who threw a tantrum because they insist on being important people with huge kitchen islands in zone 2.

Poor kitchen islands, why are you bringing them into this? Would you ban them or just nuke zone 2?

Kitchen islands are at the heart of the malaise this country finds itself in.

You either believe in free speech and the right to protest or you don't.

He is exercising both and no one should be telling him (or anyone else) where or when it is appropriate to peacefully protest imho.

Yes, of course, but I don't think everything can be just down to whether or not you've got a right to do it. I might well completely agree with Bray's views, but just out of basic decency I'd keep quiet when the PM was resigning, or the King or Kieran McKenna speaking, somebody playing classical music, or reciting poetry, etc. etc. etc.

If you just say "he's got a right to do it so it's OK" anywhere and any time, where does it end? 99% of places and 99% of times I'd agree with you, but if nothing is 'sacred' our culture just degenerates into who can shout the loudest.

I assumed it was him, but Mason said "people" I think, so wondered if it was another group. Point stands. It could be Thatcher or Fartage standing down and I'd feel the same way about having some bleedin' dignity.

Definitely Steve Bray.

Agree with your point. And I genuinely wanted to hear what Starmer had to say without the noise.

Lewis Goodall is an interesting one... he seems to span political divides and have earnt respect. Perhaps this is reflected in his upbring and learnt accent? Whatever - I rarely see people taking at a pop at him, despite him being pretty forthright as in the linked tweet.

I don't really see the pragmatism, to be honest?

It was entirely predictable that a Labour Government that spends most of its time telling leftists, liberals, LGBTQ+ people, ethnic minorities broadly to screw off was going to lose them support to various other left and liberal parties. It was broadly predictable that their electoral coalition wouldn't be sustainable without those people. It was entirely predictable that welfare reform and maintaining the 2-child cap wouldn't fly with their MPs.

Is it not 'pragmatic' to actually acknowledge these things as real, material constraints on your political actions?

The government is economically to the left but the vibes on social issues have undoubtedly been more right-leaning. Gives everyone something to be annoyed about which, in absence of an overarching narrative about what the government is trying to achieve, can lead to problems.

It's an impressive list of achievements laid out today but sadly it wasn't enough.

Well this is the bizarre and troubling thing.

Most people when asked dont know this stuff and believe that everything is bad, per farage and social media. Most cant really explain what Starmer is going wrong. They just shout "two tier kier" or some such nonsense.

OK, I see, so you would suggest that the people and media have got it wrong and Labour's doing a great job?

Will call the family in the UK and tell um to stop worrying, they've never had it so good and Labour as it all under control. That should reassure um loads and guarantee their future Labour votes.

So you want to pick and choose the occasions people can protest?

I think Bray's timing was poor, but in a democracy I welcome all peaceful protest even those whose views I disagree with.

You sound like the monarchists who loudly objected to the Republic protesters who chose to protest the coronation who used the exact same argument, "not now"

If Bray wishes to protest today good luck to him just the same as if any BNP lot wish to. The alternative is a sinister place where we only allow those protests we feel are tasteful. Not for me thanks.

I would suggest that the hatred for Starmer is way out of proportion with the facts.

Do tell us what it is your family are so troubled by currently in the UK?

Also did they hate the previous government in a similar way?

I'm not sure they hate Starmer. Just far from impressed. They definitely disliked the last government as much as this one if not more.

They live mainly on Haverhills Chalkstone and Parkway Council estates or a halting site just outside Harlow. Do you wanna explain to them how they've never had it so good?

I'm not sure most of um do believe Reform would improve it ( though possibly a couple would..). I wouldn't be surprised if about half of won't vote next time.

They just don't see their lives improving i imagine. ( No matter how much Labour tell um it as)

I think its fair to say that most people's standard of living has dropped over the last decade or two, but a financial crash, Brexit and a pandemic haven;t helped and one of those was voted on by the people. I guess more important is are things going the right way now? Hard to say, but it feels like at least the rot has been stopped.

Indeed. In the age of social media, politics has become entertainment. People don't watch EastEnders on TV anymore, they expect politicians to provide their soap opera instead. Attention spans are goldfish-like. Incumbents have a shelf life of a pear. Good, competent PMs, who are mildly dull and can't intonate their voice very well can only last two years. Voters twist and support the new Boaty McBoatface option because, look, he's got a silly mop of blond hair! We can solve everything by blaming <insert out group>! We can just tax the rich and all go on UBI!
